The folks at PickupTruck.com have a news item showing photos of a Hummer H2 test mule:

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z241/expeditioncampers/hummerpickup.jpg

This particular vehicle is noteworthy for two reasons. First, it appears to be built on the latest GM truck and SUV platform (the GMT 900), which is considerably stronger, has better brakes, and has better suspension options than the older generation platform used on all Hummer H2s to date.

Second, the PickupTruck.com staff think they see evidence that the test mule is running the new 4.5L V8 Duramax diesel.

If true, this new Hummer pickup (or a similar Chevy crew cab 4x4 diesel 1500 pickup) might be a very nice platform for expedition travel.

Cool. They build that one and they can drop the Avalanche.

And having the diesel in the 1/2 ton trucks will be cool too.

Now how about putting one in the H3 also;)

Not trying to be an *** here guys, but Hummers suck. Unless it's a verb. Soccer moms and posers destroyed any chance of them ever being cool.

The H3 with the diesel would actually be a great vehicle. The only real issue I have with the H3 is the visibility...

Oh well, Hummers just can't get any love on ExPo.

I am not necessarily saying you are wrong, but on ExPo we try to avoid highly generalized brand bashing.

Tell us why you think they "suck". Unfortunately, the word "suck" tells us you dislike the product, but doesn't help anyone reading it know what is wrong with it. It could be as simple as "I don't like their appearance" to as detailed as you have actually owned and driven one for two years and have X things you have found to be a problem.

I have actually driven and tested Hummers, and consider the H1 and H3 to be perfectly reasonable platforms, though I still have some grumbles with them, as I do with most vehicles that are not Land Cruiser 70 series or Defender 110's :)

you brought a tear to my eye.

I agree with the poser and soccermom comment, just add GM to that list.

I drove real Humvee's in the Army. They were very tough and I always said I wanted one back then. (I also liked the 6x6's "Duece and a half's".) I suppose it's a purpose thing. I have NEVER seen a Hummer H2 off of pavement... never. I guess it just bothers me a bit, you know, the waste of natural resources based solely on image. I guess it's only the H2's I have a problem with, sorry for the generalization.

I have a friend here who regularly off-roads an H2, I'll see if I can find some picts. Its not my favorite vehicle, but he beats on it!

I've wheeled with a few hummers, and I thought they were sweet. A little gas thirsty, and a little too much chrome, but besides that I like them. If you put the engine from my 4runner (or a diesel) in an H3, i'd give it a look.

The best I could do on short notice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E2UbXaejtQ)

Spare yourself and fast forward to about 4:00 into it. His is the maroon H2 when it was still stock. Needless to say it lifted, Road armor-bumpered etc. This doesn't really do him justice but you'll get the point...

They have one-upped you and put the 5.3 GM Vortec in the H3 Alpha. The H3 Alpha also has a stronger front diff than the regular H3. Chad Hall won the Stock Full class this year at Baja in his new H3 Alpha race truck too.

Hey thanks guys, I enjoy watching off road stuff. Lets not turn this into "Prove Fireman78 wrong day" all I meant was I LOATHE mall cruisers and soccer moms driving 8 thousand pound SUVs and these vehicles will never see dirt. Just bugs me. I'm sure those guys on the Youtube video feel the same. Hey- check this one out-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ExBgdaTTDU&feature=related can you say---Arctic Expedition. OK OK I have to admit it-- that is cool!

The 4.5 Dmax is going to be a 2010 model. Released in 2009. Here is a great place with all kind of discussion about the new engine. Even a few mentions of use in Hummer. Personally I am way more interested in the development of a 1500 with the diesel. Ummm 30mpg in a full size pick up.

Here is a thread about Hummers wheeling from Pirate. Lots of H2's and H3's.

Save the diesel, why hate on the GM I5; it is a great engine? I've never owned one but have been very impressed by their design and drivability.

I think the whole "soccer mom" H2 Fad is pretty much over with, they've since stepped up to their CLS Benz or Chrysler 300. There's always one "gotta have it" vehicle on the market that burns out quick. I've seen a few H2's off road, they actually do pretty good as long as they aren't running anything larger than a 35" tire. I'm super excited about all of the smaller diesels coming out!!

:iagree:

What I've seen in my area is that the H2 has come and gone quicker than a hiccup.

The new Mom-mobile....? Sorry fellas, but around here the FJ Cruiser is the new Mom Cruiser. That really surprised me.

It really chaps my derriere that the one black TRD edition FJ we have in town is owned and driven by a Mom with two kids. It looks sweet at the grocery store parking lot.....

Yeah, seems like GM went the soccer mom route w/the H2 and that has bled over to the H3. It sucks for aftermarket parts - try finding an aftermarket winch bumper?? yeah, for the 1st year or two there was nothing but homebrew stuff. It's getting a little better, but there's still only about 3 or 4 major manufacturers. 90% of aftermarket is chrome, yuck! And because it's a hummer, everything is ridiculously overpriced - nevermind that my brother's '07 1500 was $5k more than my H3, he can still get a winch bumper for 1/2 the price it costs me :(

And if you look at the recent union contracts & talk on Hummer forums, there is plan for a diesel in the H2, but no plans whatsoever in the H3. With the new Alpha (V8, cast iron front dif), that's gonna hit 99% of the H3 market. Hearing about some of the design issues with fitting the V8, and the small market for diesel, it's probably not worth the effort for GM. Bummer :(

Did I here "smaller diesel?" Perhaps in the new Power Wagons??? Music to my ears... :) Oh ya, that's too bad about the FJ's. Haven't seen that too much around these parts yet though.

What is sad is they will likely detune it to get 23-25 mpg more likely... It probably could get 30 mpg with a tune designed for mileage but they tune for power...

Those soccer mom SUVs are eventually sold...to people like us. Hate them all you want, but they provide a steady source of great used 4WDs..

I drive a Lexus LX450 owned previously by a soccer mom that is no longer mall parking lot limited.
