I have an issue with the HVAC system. It will only blow on settings 3 and 4. Everything else works fine. I was told by a friend it was the resistor under the glovebox. Can anyone with more smarts than I comment and confirm before I tear apart the car?

Hi Roger,
I used The Google sounds like a common problem, you need to replace the Fan Control Amplifier

I don't know exactly where it is on that truck but your friend is correct. The resistor pack will be somewhere in the airflow from the blower. More then lightly it will be right next to the motor. It will have a plug with about 4-5 wires and one or two screws holding it into the blower box. Meter it out before spending the cash.
Usualy a pretty easy repair.
Hit some of the Nissan boards and I bet you can get a definitive answer as to the location if one of the other Nissan guys here has not had to replace one.

Hi Roger,
I used The Google:

Supposedly you need to replace a Fan Control Amplifier
Ewwwww that is not going to be cheap if it is a digital control instead of a simple resistor pack. :(

From my looking around, if you have the fancy digital setup,(like the QX4 Infiniti) it is the digital control, and if you have the basic knobs, it is the resistor. Let's hope it is the latter.
Strange thing is, it works in setting 3/4 and I can still turn it off....
Thanks guys.

See that sounds like a resistor pack. Deferent value for each speed. Hope it is.
I had a RX7 with the digital control that went out. I got lucky as it was under warranty but if it wasn't the controler was in the same module as the display and it was nearly $400 with labor.
After reading that link it sounds like to power portion is in a seperate box but still not a cheap fix like a resistor pack. :(

On one of those forums someone said from the dealer it was ~$215, and from the pick and pull it was ~$25.
I'd give this place a call and see if they have it..

Meh its pretty common on most older nissans. The resistor is located on the drivers side behind/under the glovebox on the blower housing. It has a (i think brown) electrical connector attached to it with 4 wires coming out of it. If you need help im in alpine and can assist you. You need to remove the glove box and the plastic panel behind the glove box to get to it im pretty sure.

Follow up:
It was the resistor. 62.00 from the local dealer.
All is happy in the Nissan world.
