View Full Version : Anyone in SoCal Up For A Drive?

Wonderin' if anyone would like to do a drive on either April 8th or 15th? I haven't done much off road so I would like to travel with someone. My truck is stock so nothing too crazy. I was thinking about either Burro Schmidt's via Last Chance Canyon, Cucamonga Big Tree Trail or Pilot Rock. These are just suggestions but I'm open to anything. Looking to travel with someone both for safety and to learn from.

I would be interested. I pick up my sliders next weekend and need an excuse to go test them. There is a cool trail out near Jacumba that some of us did that i would like to go explore more.

Where ya at? Rig? Mods?

I'm up in Pasadena area. I've just got a stock Tacoma 4x4. I have yet to meet with the SoCal members:( I am interested in meeting someday, but both weekends are booked for me. Hopefully I can meet up with the E.P. crew soon. And, don't underestimate your truck. A stock Tacoma 4x4 is very capable. I don't believe I have really experienced all my truck can offer and thus far I am impressed. (althoug I am bias to Toyotas)

Very Cool!

We should work on a weekend that is good for most and make an overnight out of it. The last time we went to the Smugglers Cave area, Mark, Brian and I found a great camping spot that can accomodate quite a few rigs!

The Smugglers cave area is very cool and is friendly to all types of rigs, stock to wild!

Jacumba USA - dang :Wow1: . Just googled it. Do you need a passport? Just joking. That would be one heck of a day run for me (more freeway time than trail time).

This forum is really great. More taking in the scene rather than worrying about getting over the next obstacle. :suning:

Will be checking here more often.

did you guys do the trip yet? I just saw this thread and I'd love to meet some local people. Rower trail is fun (Santa Clarita area) and Hungry Valley has everything from sandy creek beds to fire-roads to gnarly "I just ruined my seat" hills. A friend may be doing a quick trip through Cleghorn and then 2N17X on Sat the 15th or Sun the 16th..? I know Sunday's Easter, so the boss may not let me go, but it sound fun.

let's try to get together some weekend soon and hit the dirt.

Kevin....and guys,

Here is a link to some trail write up's regarding the "Old Stage Route".

I started a trip thread over at 4wdtrips to do this trip near Table Mtn. but my truck has been sick for so long!

Check out this guys threads ("Britain" over at MJR) ....he has great pics and info. I actually met him on that stage route back in Jan. and helped him winch a rock obstruction off the trail.

I'm told I can pick my truck up tomorrow.....we shall see. I would like to make it to the desert at least a couple times before it gets too hot!

I would like to also head out to the Colorado River just north of Yuma.

Anyway.....it would be nice to have a local group of regulars to explore with.

Hey guys, :luxhello: I live in West Covina, east of LA. I have always wanted to run the Cleghorn trail but never had anybody to go with. How does 6/10 or 11 sound. Anybody up for a daytrip? If anybody wants to suggest another trail on these days that would be fun to and I would't mind an overnight trip :camping: if needed.

Ron B
05-16-2006, 07:04 AM
I am interested. Cleghorn is pretty easy with some fun/gnarly off-shoots. It will spit you out near 2N17X whick is a fun/short trail. Lots of good stuff in that area.

:jumping: We should setup a time and meeting place then. I heard this trail has an easy side and a hard side so it might be interesting. Did some runs on the fire roads right by Silverwood lake so if we finnish early we could probably do those too.

These roads should be ok for a stock 4x4 right?

I think stock would be ok. Do you have the rear locker with your taco? We can always turn around if the going gets too tough. Just make sure you have recovery points too.

ErrinV
05-16-2006, 07:49 AM
Yep, rear locker. TRD offroad package. I'll pick up a rear recovery point and tow strap before then. Been meaning to get one anyways.

Very interested in doing this before another day trip on the 6/17.

Life in 4Lo did this area earlier this year and had a fun time.
He informed me that there is a bypass fireroad that zigzags along so you will keep meeting up w/ the trail so skipping parts is no problem (as my vehicle is still STOCK!)

Also told me it would be more of a Width issue than a lift. So is he saying a stocky husky guy like me wont fit through the trail? :D

Any decision on what day - Sat or Sun?

Hi there, when do you plan to go?

Ron B
05-23-2006, 05:36 AM
So far it's me plus 3 other trucks for Sat. We're doing Gold Mountain on the way to John Bull. Should be a great time assuming no drama.

So far it's a hummer only trip (me, 2 H2's and an H3)...I was hoping some other brands would represent and come join the fun (now's your chance to come and heckle :) ). I've done these trails with H2's before, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the 3 handles the carnage. I wish I could talk my friend into bringing his new FJ! It would be fun to watch the FJ and the H3 wheel together.

Hi there, when do you plan to go?

Hey ST,

I plan on leaving this Friday from Cerritos, CA and probably return Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. Sounds like you got a cool trip to DV this weekend, let's hear more about it?

I see you're from West Co?

VikingVince
05-25-2006, 03:27 PM
Ron B...I might be interested in joining you on Sat...what level of difficulty (on 5 point scale) are Gold Mountain and John Bull...do you need at least one locker and at least 32 inch tires? (neither of which I have!) If they challenge H2's...hmmmm...sounds like above 3.5

VikingVince

Just did a little research on the John Bull trail...considered the "mini-Rubicon" and vehicles without lockers not allowed on trail...guess that answers my question!!!....have fun!!!

Ron B

It's really not as bad as everyone thinks -- but there are a few hairy sections. You are right, a rear locker and 33's are a must have on this trail. I'll probably have a seat open if ya want to ride along and have some tasty beverage?

I always thought Hair was a good thing!

I still have ALL mine!:D

4WDTrips.net is doing a Big Bear run June 10/11 weekend........

Vince.....just head up with Jack and the crew.....I'm sure they won't get too outrageous! .....and you can meet "cruiserguy" from BC/and Guatemala.

I hope to make it.....but still have Engine issues.

The trails were fun, but we had to cut John Bull short. It was crowded on the trail and a truck in the group infront of us blew up the tranny(Bronco)...took a few hours to get it off the trail. We turned around about a third of the way into the trail -- fearing darkness and breakage.

Here's a few snapshots

Itll be difficult for me to venture too far since I have a rugrat in the making - gotta be close by for the unexpected.

But if there is a run for Rohwer or Gorman there is a better chance for me to make it (45 min or less from me).

Pic from ryanmb21. Do you know these 2 (red and yellow) ?- I see them at least once a month around here.

ErrinV - I was thinking the same exact thing (even with my f/r lockers and 33s without sliders to boot)! :D

Hey guys,

The Rowher trail was a lot of fun, the guy in the red is John, yellow is Alan and another guy with a black H2 named Scott. All the guys were A+ nice and were very helpful. Maybe sometime in the future we all could meet up and get some use of our 4 wheel drive

Ron B

I know those guys well. John just bought that truck a month ago -- he used to have a white one. He is studying to be an EMT.

Staying local is good for me too -- my son is 2 and a handfull! The longer trips can't happen very often with my work schedule/son. Gorman, Rohwer, and Miller Jeep trail are all good choices and in your 'hood.
