Interesting, I had no idea they would open that at all during the winter. I guess they had connections with the CO Department of Transportation, and I assume that must be who "Dr. Bob" is with. Pretty cool.

Don't know how I missed this thread!

I grew up just down the road to the East on Hwy 103 there (see map). That area used to be used as my trail running area and there are ton of great back-country camp sites without getting too far out. I have been stuck in the snow so many times up there I don't care to count.

Question: does one simply ask the county to open the road? That gate goes up early and stays there most the winter for vehicular travel, no? What procedures or do they just happen to know the right folks?

Scott, ,I think they know the right people to get access to the road in winter.

Mt. Evans road is a state highway (CO5) and is indeed usually closed in the winter. Dr. Bob is probably a.k.a. Dr. Robert Stencel, a Ph.D. in Astronomy at the Univ. of Denver (DU). DU has an observatory (called the Meyer-Womble Observatory) at the summit of Mt. Evans and I'm assuming that since Dr. Stencel is the DU Director of Observatories, he'd have keys to the gate. As an aside, the Mt. Evans observatory sits at 14,150' was at one point the highest elevation observatory in North America. Mauna Kea is slightly lower and I just dunno any higher than that (but then again I am no astronomy buff either).

This is just a guess since I'm not terribly familiar with the 'Mog scene (IOW, I dunno if Dr. Stencel is a 'Mog owner or not). But, I'm mildly familiar with DU astronomy. I live about a dozen blocks west of campus and stop at Chamberlin Observatory near campus for public star gazing nights.

And as a further aside, back on the weekend these guys were punching their way to the cabin at Mt. Evans, we were busting crud near Rollin's Pass, west of Nederland, CO. I have an little bit of video, dunno if it'll work (I don't have a video camera myself and just edited it):

OT warning!

Pskhaat, they re-opend that ski area just north-east of Echo Lake and I think they have lights there too. Thought you would get a kick out of that.

DaveinDenver, I'm a couple miles east of you.

Willman, the area where they got stuck has good skiing through August.

'Tis true! The old Squaw Pass Ski Area is now called Echo Mountain Park. It's a big freestyle park, you know, for the kids and stuff. ;-)

Gotta grab a beer sometime, then! How far east are we talking? I'll start naming streets and you stop me when I'm close...University, Colorado, Monaco, Parker.

Holly and Florida for small streets. Used to be on Asbury and Marion.
