I consider this group the core of offroaders. The ones who try to make a difference.
Thats why I'm looking here for some help with this clean-up. It will be out at Four Peaks Rd next month.

If you are headed out on a run that day and can fill a bag on the way that would be great!
If you want to help get a sponsor or two that would help a lot.
If you want to donate a nominal amount to cover some costs that would also help.

Where: Beeline Highway and Four Peaks Rd. (AKA NF-143)
Just North East of Phoenix, AZ

Directions from Phoenix: Take the 101 to Shea and turn East. Take this to the Beeline(AKA Highway-87). Turn North on the Beeline (87). Take this 15 miles. The turn is just before mile marker 204. Turn Right on Four Peaks Rd (NF-143) (east). Take the dirt road less than a mile to the restrooms and parking area.

When: February 9th. 9am-3pm. (Come by to fill 1 bag or 20 whatever you have time for. Feel free to show up anytime between 9am-3pm and leave when you need to.)

What to bring: A desire to leave it a little better than you found it. Trash bags will be provided!

Recommended Items: Gloves, long pants, sun block, a hat, water, snacks.

For more info please contact: Tim Huber

Thanks to: Racer Offroad (www.raceroffroad.com) for $150 worth of gift certificates that will be raffled off!!!

Hltoppr, No worries. See ya at the next one! :REOutCampFire03:

Thanks for the support Scott!

I would love to have the Flying Family come! I'm going to meet at the Four Peaks Parking lot. It is just east of Highway 87 (The Beeline). I'm still working on a time, but I think it may be about 9am. How does that sound. :)
I want people to feel free to come or go when they can. Fill up one bag or twenty. It's all good. :26_7_2:

Tim...........

I've been watching your thread.

I'm interested in how you are going to take out the burned FJ.

Are you going to bring in a large trailer and pull it on and tow it out?

Or are you going to cut it up into smaller pieces?

I also saw the shooters mess they left just up the hill! Oh Bugga ME! I hate that!

This whole mess is terrible to see!

If I was there............I would certainly join you.

Thanks for sharing your trip report!:26_7_2:

Thanks SWR! We'll meet up on a run someday I hope! :camping: :safari-rig:
The FJ needs to be checked out by the Sheriff first to see if its part of a crime. If so they will remove it. If not we'll try and get a flat bed out there to take it away.
There is so much trash out here I just hope to make a noticeable difference! Sad, but true.

So is it tough to get to the area where the FJ is? Would we be able to bring in a long trailer to winch the remains onto if we were able to get its "wheels" onto it?

EDIT::: nm I somehow missed your recent post

Yea I guess having the sheriff check it out would be good first

Tim,

It was good talking to you today. I talked to my VP today and we're in 100%. I'll be making a formal announcement at our club meeting on the 3rd Friday of this month. Please don't forget to check in at the CSC board to see what's going on over there regarding this cleanup.

I'll start working on getting some help from the dealership we talked about tomorrow. I'll also be working on some raffle prizes to entice anyone who shows up to hang out all day and help out.

I'm also hoping to get a trailer locked down this week for hauling the FJ out. I checked it over on Saturday when we were out there and there is no VIN evident on the rig. I'm sure the frame numbers are there somewhere but I wasn't crawling around in that mess to find them.

Typically what CSC has done as a club on our cleanups is to hit the meeting spot at aroun 8:30 or 9 and get everyone out with bags no later than 10am. We have everyone meet back at a predetermined place aroun 1 or 2 for lunch and a heavy policing of the meeting area then a raffle around 3 or 4. This leaves plenty of time for people who travel 2 hours or more to get home around dinner time. In the past CSC has done similar cleanups at Sheeps Bridge, Fossil Springs (2), and the Coke Ovens. We've hauled TONS (literally) from each of those sites. The FS has been great to work with on all of these occassions. I'm sure they'll be great this time around also.

I'll shoot you a PM tomorrow sometime to start the discussion about some ideas that I've got to get some good participation on this one.

SWR and 2006KJSPORT4x4,
hahaha! I bet there will be plenty of big chunks to move out besides the FJ. I'm going to scout it out before hand to see what is out there.

BMAN,
I'd love to have the Copper State Cruisers in on the clean up. The FS has basically said to not touch the FJ there is plenty more. I'll look forward to more info. If you need to give my cell number to the Toyota dealer feel free to so we can coordinate.

Tim,
Sorry if I am asking too many questions.

1. What is going to be the method of removing all the trash we pick up?

2. Will the Forest Service help with this or do we need to handle transportation to the landfill/transfer station?

3. Do we need to talk to the landfill/transfer station about waving the dump fee for this trash?

If we need to arrange transportation, I will call a friend that has an excavating business over off of Happy Valley Rd. and see if he will bring a dump truck or end dump.
There is a transfer station along the Beeline not far from where we will be if I remember correctly.

Chuck,
No problem. Questions are good. The FS said they will provide the bags and the pickup of the bags. To help them out I want to put all the bags in a central location. (near the parking area)
I have the use of a trailer from one friends construction company to help move the bags when filled. If you have or have access to another trailer, that would be great. Some trash obviously won't fit in a bag so it will be nice to move those objects as well.

This is a great plan and although I have a big cub scout function that day it isn't until 2pm so I will be there from 9-12 picking up as much as I can as fast as I can.
I will spread the word also....
So if I understand we have trash bags covered & the FS will pick them up correct?
Other needs?
Food for lunch?
Give-a-way items? (AZ doesn't allow "raffles" unless you have been a non-profit for 3 years)
Gloves?
I will hit up anyone I can think of for any of the above or whatever else you post that is needed.
Keep up the great work.

Great news! Glad to have you! I hope the emergency gear testing went well. It must have. You made it back.
Yes, bags and collection will be covered.
My current challenges are water and food.
GREAT call on the raffle. Its actually a give-a-way and I realized the same legality situation today. I'll be trying to back track and change the posts tomorrow to read Give-a-way.

Hello and what a great idea to start off the new year with. I sent Dynamike 20+ big green BLM trash bags up. I'll see if I can get more if you want? (I'll be up in Tucson next week and can pass them off to someone there) Or if you swing by your local BLM office and explain what's going on, I'm sure they will give you them by the hundreds. I did this for a L.O.S.T AZ run. Was expecting 20 or so bags, ended up with probably 100. The land conservation ranger wanted me to take more, told him it was probable over kill. Sorry I will not be able to make it up for this. later.

I know a lot of us have an SUV, Jeep or other "non" trucks. Although piling bags of trash in the back can work, many don't want to take the risk of hurting the interior of their vehicle or just don't have the room!
If you have a hitch mounted bike rack you may have the perfect alternative. I simply looped the bag back on itself to make sure it gets a good grip and doesn't go anywhere.
Take a look:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i190/soaz/Trash%20Carrier/IMG_0214.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i190/soaz/Trash%20Carrier/IMG_0215.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i190/soaz/Trash%20Carrier/IMG_0218.jpg
Keep in mind that the bags will sway around back there and I don't recommend any highspeed or highway driving with this set up. It may just make the difference in carrying enough trash to make a difference though.

I clicked on the "I'll be there!" box, so I'll be there!!! Are there any plans for a caravan down to the Clean up from north/central AZ? I'd rather follow down there than try to make my own way. Where and when would we meet up?

I'll be camping, but the FJ guys, Jeep guys, and xterra guys are all caravaning that morning. If you don't find a caravan I'll be up running around putting up signs etc. until about 8.
I'll keep and eye out for ya.

Oh, on a lighter note, my boss asked me what I did last weekend, so I told him...and forwarded some pics. He want's to know when we are doing it again, and has offered to make some calls to see if we can get the corp. office involved. There is money budgeted for these kind of activities, and they love grass roots efforts by "real" people.....

Kind of surprizing when you consider how resource intensive our operations are (can you say million dollar electric bills, petroleum based products, machines with a thermal efficiency of less than 15%?).

We will do it again and again. I think the best attitude is to just assume that each bad area will need at least one cleanup per year. (I think we'll change SOME minds in the process) But I agree, there will always be trash to pick up. Talk about job security.... or volunteerism security...
Unyielding pursuit of cleaning and teaching responsible use is the only way to go!!!

1leglance,
Do you think this would be a good article for that new FJmagazine?

Clean Up Our Land, One Trail at a Time

A Chinese proverb states "It is possible to move a mountain by carrying away small stones."

Tim Huber, a banker from Scottsdale, Arizona, moved a 7-ton mountain of trash from Four Peaks Road in six hours. No, he didn’t do it alone—he had about 250 helpers. So, how did Huber find 250 people to just drop what they were doing on a beautiful Saturday and go pick up trash that others had left?

Huber’s story is an inspiration to any of us who have ever shaken our heads at litter strewn along a road wondering what we, one person, could possibly do about it.

In early January, Huber went for a drive in his SUV along Four Peaks Road in the hills north of Phoenix. He was stunned and angered by what he saw along the way—not only the usual sprinkling of bottles and cans, but appliances, computer equipment, furniture, spent ammunition casings, and construction debris. He was tired of just shaking his head in disgust. He decided to do something.

His first inclination was just to set a time for himself to go pick up some trash, but one of the many pieces of debris that really shocked him into action was the burnt-out hulk of what had been a brand new Toyota FJCruiser. He knew he would need some help to haul that out, so he talked to a few friends, thinking “no one is going to want to do this.”

To Huber’s pleasant surprise, everyone he asked responded enthusiastically. He set his clean-up date about one month out to give everyone time to plan. He had never organized a clean-up before, or even attended one, but suddenly, people he barely knew were saying “Great! I’ll be there!” Before he knew it, a small army was forming.

His next call was to the local Forest Service to find out if any special arrangements needed to be made. Again, he was met with enthusiasm. The local district of the US Forest Service not only sanctioned the event, but provided trash bags and a 4-ton capacity dumpster on the day of the clean-up.

Then he expanded his call to aid by reaching out to other people who enjoyed the Four Peaks area—hikers, mountain bikers, 4x4 clubs, shooting clubs—anyone he could think of. Huber searched the web for local clubs and recreational groups, and posted information about the clean-up effort on as many sites as he could find.

“I spent about four-hours every night just surfing the net, joining forums, posting the information and answering questions. Everyone just started jumping in!”

Huber contacted some local business owners to see if they would help in any way. Once again, vendors jumped in with donations of food, cleaning supplies and equipment, and raffle items.

As the date of the event drew near, Huber drew from the talents of other volunteers to help create maps and signs, staff supply stations, and continue to spread the word throughout the outdoor recreation community.

A great break in public awareness came when a local news channel caught wind of the rapidly growing clean-up event, and called Tim for a broadcast just two days before the event.

On Saturday, February 9, people flocked from all over the state to help Huber pick up trash along Four Peaks Road. With smiles and determination, the attendees removed every scrap of visible trash, including the burnt out Toyota.

When asked what advice he would give to someone who wanted to instigate a clean-up effort, Huber replied, “Just do it. You pick your trail, you pick your date, and then just run with it. Others will follow.”

Will the trash come back? Unfortunately, yes, but maybe next time, it will be a little less, and a little less after that, until dumpers are too ashamed to just blatantly throw their refuse into a once again pristine desert. “I will definitely do another one, but I will just start over with no expectations,” says Huber.

One person CAN make a difference. One person brought two-hundred fifty people from all walks of life together with minimal lead time and media exposure. One person effected the removal of 7 tons of trash from public land, and encouraged any of us who have ever shaken our heads in disgust at a littered stretch of road that we CAN make it better, one trail at a time!

Huber cannot express enough his gratitude to the following sponsors and supporting clubs: Racer Offroad, The Good Gun Foundation, SDHQ Offroad, Total Chaos Fabrication, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, Overland Journal, Overland Video, Sierra Expeditions, REI, The Daybreak Deli, Tyson Crews Development, Stardust Country, Hunter Offroad, M&I Bank, Copper State Cruisers, The AZ Virtual Jeep Club, AZ TTORA, the AZ Xterra Owners Club, AZFJ, FJ Cruiserforums, Bman, Elvota, BioD 60, Danica, AZLane, the Forest Service, AZ Fish and Game, and the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office. The generosity and enthusiasm of these businesses and clubs helped to launch the event to a resounding success.

Do you want to organize a clean-up of your own favorite trail or site? Here is a basic checklist to get you started:

Action list:
1. Identify an area that is significant and meaningful to you. Don’t look for the area you think needs the most help—think of a place that you like to spend time, for which you have a passion.
2. Build a team: if you are active in a local recreation club, start there—ask questions about the site you have in mind. Gather input about a date that is likely to attract the most participation. Ask for referrals to other interested clubs and businesses.
3. Contact the local land management authority. Arizona is managed primarily by BLM or USFS. Tell them where and when you want to do a clean-up. Often, they will lend resources like trash bags or dumpsters. There may be limitations to the size of group permitted in an area at one time.
4. Gather support: ask businesses to provide resources in exchange for sponsorship exposure. Resources donated may range from raffle items, to clean-up supplies like rakes and gloves, to snacks for participants. Remember to give them as much public thanks and exposure as possible so that they will have a positive result from helping.
5. Write a press release: one page that clearly states when, where, what to bring, and who to contact with questions. Distribute it to news media; outdoor-interest publications, outdoor-oriented non-profit organizations, websites, and clubs.

Tools:
• Shovels--large, flat-head shovels are the most effective at scooping up small debris.
• Rakes—leaf rakes and rock rakes can be equally useful.
• 5-gallon buckets with handles work well for hauling glass or metal scraps that may cut through a plastic trash bag.
• Heavy-duty trash bags—though these are often provided by a sponsor, there can never be too many.

What to wear:
• Long pants
• Long sleeved shirt
• Work boots or heavy leather shoes with thick soles
• Heavy work gloves
• Sunscreen
• Eye protection

Communication:
• Cell phone list
• CB, FRS, or HAM Radio.

Basic human needs:
• Water
• Restrooms—For large events, it may be a good idea to have porta-potties brought in—check with the public land management agency.
• First Aid—nasty cuts, scrapes, and punctures can occur, as well as the common sprained ankle or insect bite. Have basic first aid on hand, and invite law enforcement or EMS personnel to attend.

Touche!! I hope to only find a ounce of fun, but I suspect if I look hard enough there will be a location near Phoenix with more fun than Pee-wee's fun house!! :ylsmoke:

First off its great to see the sponsors getting some press and print. They deserve every bit of it.
Secondly, I've signed up to be a member of the Blue Ribbon Coalition. You get the magazine they send out, the latest with the cleanup in it, and it makes you feel great.
BRC and Tread Lightly are just great and I want to support them. Enough talking.
The link is below to the digital version of the BRC magazine about the clean-up. Enjoy!!
