As of 3pm mst today, the node in Santa Fe is down still. There is a repeater/node just up the road from my house, but they do not list the tone online. I have emailed them a few times with no response yet. :( If the other node goes back online, I'll try to attend.

Hey Chuck,
Bummer...we'll get ya on sooner or later tho.
The 3502 node on 442.775 in Pojoaque is a WinSystem Affiliate (http://www.winsystem.org/), so they are generally locked into that setup. We've got one of those setup here. It's a really clique(ish) group - not overly freindly to newbies.

I drive by his house everyday and see the repeater's antenna. Maybe I'll stop by and try some persuasion. ;-)

Mark,
You are the second person I have heard say that about the Win system. I have had short contacts with a few hams on the Win system and never experienced any unfriendliness. It's sad to hear about negative experiences from different sources regarding the win system because it's really pretty cool with all the coverage they have.
The repeater I use in SF is on the Win system but the owner is cool with me using it for the Expo net.

I am new to HAM and just received my call sign, I'd love to get into the network, but I am struggling to understand how to connect to the IRLP networks, I found a local repeater (http://status.irlp.net/IRLPnodedetail.php?nodeid=3381) that is connected. How do I get into the repeater and into the network, what are the tones and nodes? Are there any threads that give any detailed info on how to do this that might be HAM newbie friendly?

Paul,
Here's the method I use to connect - give it a try and see if it works!

Great thank you that helps a ton! I'll give it a try tonight hopefuly the repeater is open :)
Thank you Mark,
I am still getting the hang of using my new Tech license. It sure is a pleasure being able to fumble around on this net. I am still shocked thinking about who and where I am talking(Wow, that was Chuck, sounds as good as if we were sitting by the fire). :camping: This really is a positive experience for the Portal. My hats off to you for taking the time to make this happen. :26_7_2:

I couldn't key into the repeater. I tried keying in but I'm not sure I totally understand how to use a repeater I look forward to getting in on these nets, but I am still struggling to get the hang of it. Thanks Mark for the info on IRLP the information you linked to helped answer a lot of my questions.

My repeater in Santa Fe finally came back online today and I got to participate. :wings:
Sorry my signal was weak early on. I had spoken to the repeater owner 2 weeks ago and he doesn't have a good permanent antenna yet, so here I was driving around snowy backroads of Santa Fe trying to get as close to the guys house as I could. LOL... I finally had good a good signal sitting in a park there at the end. :costumed-smiley-007
That was fun and Mark is awesome at net control. Good job Mark. :26_7_2:

I started out thinking this was going to be a slow one since there were not many checking in on the roll call. By my count we ended up with 11 check-ins.
Pretty good.
Good stuff,
Mark you did a great job as usual.

Appreciate your taking net control, and I know you are looking for others to step forward.
My appologies to the net for a bit of clumbiness getting out - still sorting this IRLP thing, yet think I will get it down with a few more tries. And sorry for being short; local ARES check-in is at 7:45, meaning I need to sign out of the net at about 7:40.
Thanks all for your sharing of knowledge this eve on the net. I look forward to your posts of what you shared with all this eve.
And, while my photography is basic, my wife's is fantastic. A few of her pics from a few of our trips follow ...

Hello all,
It wasn't too bad getting onto the net through IRLP. I need to work on my location relative to the local repeater, but I can solve that.
As I mentioned in the net, a great book on compostion and creativity is called "Learning to See Creatively" by Bryan Peterson. I have had my copy for about 18 years, but it appears to have been updated recently. It explains about all of the elements of composition and gives examples of OK photos, then shows one or more examples of great photos taken in the same locations, by changing point of view. An easy read.
Attached are a couple night photos taken in Havasupai Canyon, a side canyon of the Grand Canyon and on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. These were all taken at full dark (with a near full moon) with a Nikon D100 digital SLR. ISO setting 200 or 400, maximum aperture (about f4.0) and shutter speed 20 to 30 seconds. They were shot in RAW format which allows you to override virtually all the in camera settings later in Photoshop (or your RAW converter) Think of it as a digital negative and all the control that implies. Exposure was increased, color balance was changed and other parameters were changed for aesthetic reasons. Automatic noise reduction was used in-camera, and they still show some signs of digital noise. For comparison, a daytime shot (looking down at the falls) is also included.
Great net.

Sorry I missed the net last night. I have couple of nice radios, both a mobile and a HT. But a lot of good they do me locked in the Tuffy console when the truck is in the body shop. Sheesh, would be impossible to argue if someone said I have my head firmly planted in my posterior. And I wanted to talk on this net, being that I'm one of the last hold outs using manual focus film cameras.

We missed ya Dave!
And, the question was raised about security for your gear - you just proved how good the Tuffy products work!
I was not successful at checking in, however, I was listening. Note that I could hear my voice going out on another radio, so, I am not sure what was up.
Thanks to all for passing on their tips and recommendations.

So during the net I am on Twin Peaks here in SF enjoying the view during the net. I keep my own log of all the check-ins for practice and I wear my headlamp instead of keeping the dome light on for the hour.
Half way home on my 10min. drive I finally notice that my headlamp was still on while I was driving. DOH! What a dork...

Pick an evening and we can do some testing. Please contact me via PM with details if that works for you. The Western Reflector channel #9251 isn't overly busy. I can also try to reach you directly via the node your using. My local node is W7JLC, #3182.
