Few people over at ultimateyota have experienced planetary gear failures on their 01-02 4Runners. LINK (http://www.ultimateyota.com/smf/index.php?topic=4012.0) From what they're saying, the Tacomas use the same transmissions, as well as the early Tundras.
I know there are a lot of you guys on here with 01-04 auto Tacomas. Any of you experience something like this? I hope this is blown out of proportion and I'm worrying about something that is not that likely to happen. Most reported the problem at 100+k miles.

Sounds like it should be a possible recall, I would look it up or phone your local dealership. If thrust washers are blowing out there is nothing preventitive maintenance can stop, it would be poor design on the manufacturer's part.

Never heard of an issue myself... one of my part-timers and good freind Sully had ~250k on his first drivetrain (not all his miles so theoretically the auto trans could have been replaceed but it looked original). I'll ask around, mabey it is common?

Over the years I've only heard of a few. They usually have a few things in common. A340F transmission, no aftermarket tranny cooler, other vehicle modifications, and used off road. I hope I don't have to eat my words (knock on wood, etc) but I'm not worried and I'm over 100k. Hopefully running synthetic, a large cooler, skinny pedal finesse, and ECT on (I don't like the economy car shifts), has made a difference.
