View Full Version : How heavy is your Tacoma?

Hi folks,
I had the Tacoma at the scales this weekend because I wanted to know how much it weighted since I've been in discussion with Scott Born at Deaver Springs for my new leaf springs. I was shocked at how heavy my truck was. It came in at 4818 +/- 22 lbs!. :eek:
Has anyone else had their Tacoma on the scales? If so what were the numbers?
Here are a few extra details:
It's a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, Extended Cab, V6, 4x4 with stock alloys and 31" MTR tires
My registration states 3380 lbs (1536 Kg actually)
I have the following "heavy" additions:
Front TJM T-17 bumper
Dual batteries
Warn M8000 with synthetic rope and fairlead
Sliders (real heavy)
Leer shell complete with roof rack and basket
Recovery items (snatch block, 30' of chain, 3/4" D-shackles, Hi-Lift, Jack Mate, shovel, etc...)
Rear class III hitch
Various tools (enough for most repairs but by no means a complete set)
That's about it for day to day driving. I did have an extra 5 Gal of fuel and some extra tools when I had the truck weighed (approx 140 lbs total). So that leaves me at 4700 lbs assuming the upper value of 4840 lbs. Does this sound correct?

That does sound correct. Although I have not weighed mine recently, it is near 6,000 lbs with driver, passenger and all tanks full (30 gal. water, 22 gal. extra fuel).

My '02 D/C weighs in a little over 5,100. That is w/o people, or camping gear, food and beer. I had it weighed in its daily driver form.

P, yours is a lightweight!
I have been meaning to get mine weighed again. It previously came in at a little over 5,000 lbs. fully loaded for a trip. But since then I have added and reconfigured quite a few things.

P, yours is a lightweight!
Compared to some of the others I guess! I did have a full tank of gas as well when it was measured.
Now I would be currious to know the MPG vs. truck weight correlation. I might be able to track it because I've got some reasonable good MPG data as well as modification dates. I know it's been declining since the mods have been adding up! Out of curriosity what kind of MPG numbers are you guys getting with your trucks. I'm at 17 MPG average since I purchased it. This includes summer, winter, highway, loaded, unloaded, off road, etc... It's just an overall average since I've been keeping track.

I think your doing pretty good at that weight. i'm sure i'm considerably lighter and getting around 18-20 depending on my right foot. I think Scott said he was getting considerably less on a preivious post, but he has pretty good drag with his tire mounted like it is, plus all the weight.

my 94 ex cab tips the scale at ~2600 front ~2200 rear (4800 lbs total) with out full trip gear. (includes my ARB bar/winch, sliders, rear tool box with some stuff)
so sounds about right for a toy.

I agree completely. Probably the best way for Scott to lose weight on the truck is to replace as much sheet metal as possible with carbon fiber. What do you think Scott? You could probably lose about 150 lb. off the truck. The increased gas mileage will pay for itself pretty fast, say, 500-1000 years. :hehe:

I don't know about fuel mileage but he is running out of things to mod. maybe a set of carbon doors, fenders, hood and tail gete will be on the list shortly.

I saw this thread last week. I finally got around to weighing my rig at the landfill today. They have certified scales there.
The truck weighed 4680 lbs. That was daily driver weight which includes: some tools, sliders, camper shell, exo-rack, hi-lift jack, and with a 3/4 tank.
My last Baja trip I was riding really low in the back, especially the driver's side. (It sagged without me in the truck, so it wasn't all from my fat *****!)The added weight on that extended trip included: 2 kayaks, 10 gallons of water, ten gallons of extra fuel, stuffed 100qt ice chest, camping gear for two people, firewood, other random crap.
I spoke with Scott at Deaver in February and he is willing to add a leaf to my 9-packs, condition the leafs, and also add some additional strength to the driver's side. I just have to pay 100 bucks plus shipping. I'll probably do that in June.
Scott Brady mentioned working on some braking upgrades in the future. That will be necessary mod soon.

I too had the 8 leafs and after my last trip to death valley fully loaded for a 3 day weekend it sagged a lot and the springs were way too soft. I had Deaver reconditioned my leafs (repaint, new bushings/hardware, including u bolts) made it a 10 and it's really nice now, properly valved shocks would make it even better. I haven't fully loaded the truck yet though, I'm still waiting for my rear swing gate tire carrier and I plan on building a deck. But with a full 14 gal aux gas tank the ten leaf feels very ascertive on road. Something you may want to think about if you plan on having a lot of weight.

Thanks for the info guys. I really like this type of information because you are dealing with real numbers (i.e. 4680 lbs). It may be interested to put the information in a table for future reference. Pehaps something like this:

Great additions to the thread guys, and P - that is an excellent idea. I will try to get my setup weighed soon so we can see what it actually is in it's current configuration. Chuck, you should add up all of your stuff for a long trip and try to calculate the weight to see what the diff. is (or weigh next time you head out on a trip).

Just to give a little perspective to you Tacoma guys. My Tundra with a full tank and otherwise empty is 4820 lbs. That's just the truck and gas, no equipment, people, or extras. I'd like to weigh it loaded just to get an ideaof how much rolls on those 20 psi in the tires.

Found this old thread linked from another (Pierre) so I thought I would chime in.
My 4Runner is not a Tacoma, or even a pickup, but it sure is heavy. All weights are wet/full tank of gas, no passengers:
Bone Stock/New:
Steer Axle 2480-lbs

(lots of armor, 2 spares, 5-gallons extra gas, tools, etc.)

I'll have to re-visit my weight because since this post I've added some weight in the form of Bud-Built skid plate, cross member and belly pan (105 lbs), Engle MT45 and mounting platform in the works (guess 75lbs), increased fuel and water capacity if required via Scepter Water and Fuel cans (total of 4 = 200 lbs). That would put me over the 5100 lbs mark not including passenger or camping gear, wow! :oops:
I may have to revise my new rear bumper design and go with aluminium!
I'm currious to know how heavy Scott's set up with Chaser in tow is now. I've heard numpers pushing 8000lbs!

I currently have a Deaver 7 pack with a 2" shackle to make up for the extra sag. When I purchased them a couple years ago I hadn't planned on shifting towards the expedition crowd. Just went up to the sierras this past weekend loaded with gear and 3 people. I'm not sure if the springs will recover from the constant negative arch of this trip.
I'm still debating on whether to get them rebuilt to 9's or 10's. I would like 10's for camping, but I think 9's would be more practical as it's a daily driver.

CYi5 I had the same problem. I got my Alcan's built for my expedition weight and for dd I just throw in some sand bags and it rides great.
nickw: It's in the Monanche Meadows, in the more southern reaches of the Sierra Nevadas.
tacollie: That is a good solution. I'm just paranoid about hauling around weight I don't need to be...then again, i've heard of people getting their best gas mileage while hauling.

If you are going through the trouble of having them rebuilt, go right for the 10's. I've got 9's and wish I would have gone to the 10's.

I'm sure Scott is over 8,000-lbs gross combined weight. Hell, I am too. My measured gross combined weight before leaving for the ExPo was 7,840 and that is without any passengers. With just me in the driver's seat I'm over 8,000-lbs! I'm sure my weight will go up a little as I add a few more parts (air compressor, etc.)
The V8 was a good call but it was a challenge to find a white V8 without a bunch of stuff I didn't want. I'm confident that my fuel economy is similar or slightly better than if I had a 4.0L V6 working a little harder to motivate this load. This is not slam on the V6 because it seems to be a terrific, powerful engine.

If you are going through the trouble of having them rebuilt, go right for the 10's. I've got 9's and wish I would have gone to the 10's.
