Ok, let's see a thread of peoples moon photos.

I really am very proud of this latest photo.
Its amazing to me how i got so lucky getting so many aspects in one shot. Yosh, the dog, fire, moon, the reflection off the river, etc.

So lets see your moon shots. :shakin: <<<< No, not that one.

Okay, so I posted this in one of the other photo threads, but this was taken after 11pm with only the ambient light from the moon (it was literally pitch black; dark enough that I didn't see the shadow of the flag until I was post processing). Exposure was 30sec. It was a waning moon (3/4-full), but because it moves during exposure it appears full. And while this has been post processed to optimize it, nothing has been embellished with software.

A coincidental moon (was shooting the crazy shadow on this light platform and the moon happened to be in-frame ... and it makes the photo even better because of it)

Me likes that golf course shot and story. :bigbossHL:

When I shot this, I thought it was going to be more spectacular . . . 3/4 moon through the lower window. Turns out it just looks like a white dot.

I probably should get around to rescanning this some day. It was done on an old scanner and sized for acceptable load time over a 28K modem. It really prints up much nicer in Illfachrome.

Here is a link to one of my large format images. It is the moon rising over Fisher Towers at sunset. I had waited for three hours in 100+ degree heat, with no water, to make this image. It was bad planning on my part, but the result was worth it.

A shot from the last full moon, the morning after the eclipse at the top of the downhill track in Formigal, Spain. Our team hanging out getting ready to inspect the course in the early twilight. The setting was stunning. And though it isn't a moon shot, the next shot is from a short period later looking towards the sunrise.

Some sweet shots here! Very nice! Here are a few of mine.

Moon rise over the Columbia River Gorge -- this is one that I actually planned out ahead of time, left work a little early, sped up there, and hand-held the shot at 210mm... which means I didn't plan as well as I should have. But it turned out well.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/RnqhfvLW2JI/AAAAAAAAATY/Aze16LVEkWo/s800/100.jpg

This one is of the latest eclipse we had. I've shot two eclipses now, and they are extremely difficult to shoot correctly without post processing to blend images. I always found that I either got just a red moon with a different looking shadow, or nothing but the shadow with blown highlights. So I tried this technique this time around. I only wish I had the D200 with interval timing when I shot this.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/R74eVDLsXTI/AAAAAAAAEf4/TJxrnTooUF8/s800/Eclipse%20Egress.jpg

This one is with the 80-400mm VR, on a tripod, and exposed for the earth shine, this is not an eclipse, Venus is in the background.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/RrvXX_72SzI/AAAAAAAABkk/mLgTdmhoySM/s800/Earthshine.jpg

A night shot, also from my back yard, probably a 30 second exposure:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/RrvWbP72SvI/AAAAAAAABjs/R2QAIyysocA/s800/Night%20View%20III.jpg

This is one of the first test shots I did of the D200 last month, I used the 80-400mm VR on a tripod and other than it being a 100% crop, it is directly from the camera with no other processing of any kind applied.

Now, I'm no astronomer. But like a blizzard in Georgia something isn't right with that photo.

Crown point to Beacon rock is practically a bearing of N.E., it's actually about 50 degrees. Like I said, I'm no astronomer, but Crown Point being North of longitude 45 that moon sure is rising a few degrees North than usual. That would mean that from my house in Hood River I could watch the moon rise over White Salmon essentially.

Or did you shoot the moon as a separate element and drop it into the image?

RBBailey
04-30-2008, 02:51 AM
Shot was taken on 11/15/05, at 16:33 in the evening.

This tiny map shows the line of sight from my position, past Crown Point to a spot just barely south of Beacon Rock, the TOPO map program shows this heading as being approx 62 degrees TN.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/SBfceZUdxqI/AAAAAAAAFRI/8jQKK1iVm1c/s800/Capture.JPG

This is a plot of the moon path that evening. Note the rising azimuth is at 57 degrees, this would put it just north of my approximated view heading, and as the moon rises it moves up and slightly south -- putting it closer and closer to my view heading of 62 degrees as lined up between Crown Point and Beacon Rock. I waited till the moon was just high enough to be above some of the refraction in the atmosphere, but still nice and big and tinted with the haze of the setting sunlight.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/bhcmrovings/SBfceZUdxrI/AAAAAAAAFRQ/6LTzZGhM4OU/s800/Capture1.JPG

Naaaaa! I didn't do any fooling around with this image. I have done star trail images by overlaying multiple exposures, but not this time. In fact, I've often thought of doing an HDR type blend to bring out the foreground details a bit, but I decided to keep it pure. The only thing I did to that photo was to play with the kelvin and boost the colors a bit, then I applied some unsharp mask.

Interesting...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3072/2453220773_2cf17e1017_b.jpg

This is the moons path for 2005, I pulled it off this http://star-www.st-and.ac.uk/~fv/sky/standstill.html from a silly little school of physics and astronomy. Now the interesting part about that chart is that the Moon's path nearly mimics that of the Sun, although in November it is actually lower in the sky than the Sun.

But then to quite the contrary and backing up your data is this (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=202&month=11&year=2005&obj=moon&afl=-12&day=1).
In my research I found that the moon does not follow an equatoral orbit, but rather an ecliptic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecliptic) which actually makes it rise in the N.E. at times.

So, I apologize for falsely accusing you of flagrant photo shop work. It is just one of my huge pet peeves when people try to pass their PS shot as an in-camera shot. And at first glance it made no sense to my feeble mind that moon could rise at that heading.

Hijack over... Back to moon shots...

Good stuff.

FWIW, the following series were shot and required little processing (certainly no double-exposure or merging work); pretty much straight-from-the-camera save for minor tweaks during RAW conversion. The first image is obviously a composite, in which I overlaid all the individual shots. Otherwise ... these are "as taken". :)

Not at all! I consider it a compliment that people do a double take on that shot -- no pun intended.

The difference between the plot you show and the one I show is that the one you show is the path around the earth on that particular date -- as viewed from space. The one I show is the path of the moon as it moves through the sky as seen from a certain spot on the globe, the compass points are actual points as if you were facing that direction at that point in the night with the horizon line across the bottom. I love this stuff!

Anyway, that is one of my best shots (out of some 45,000 with the D70).

The shot of the Airstream is sweet. Even without the fake moon. And the one of the eclipse... is that taken from a single position? It looks like you not only did an overlay, but also created the perfect arch -- right? Mine is an overlay of the different shots taken about 5 minutes apart, but if you look closely, you can see the foreground in the shot. I think I will try it like you did next time I get a chance, the exposure on the moon is much better.

The moon has proved quite elusive for my camera skills, I'm still trying to get it right. But this one came out nice, on a one hour exposure - with the north star doing its thing, and the waterfall all lit up. There WAS a moon, but it didn't make it into the picture!

Suntinez that is an awesome shot!

Were you using a digital body or shooting film?

I've always wanted to try shots like this, but none of my digital bodies have good results for real long exposure work.

Suntinez that is an awesome shot!

Were you using a digital body or shooting film?

I've always wanted to try shots like this, but none of my digital bodies have good results for real long exposure work.

Anything over 10 minutes and the shot is too grainy! I'm really jealous!

Not sure about Canon but I know my nikon has a setting where on any exposure over a min (I think its a min) it will take an equilly long exposure of nothing...just black and then it somehow melds the two images together to reduce the noise. It seems to work quite well.

It was a Nikon D90. A friend of mine had done the same shot from her patio using her Canon so I tried it too. I still don't know what I'm doing, just playing around and got lucky! One day I'll get the moon :sombrero:

I was under the impression that the longest shutter time on the D90 was 30 sec.

i'm sure it has a bulb function. 30 sec is probably as long as it will go before you have to manually set it open and time it yourself.

That's great that a Nikon D90 will produce a shot this crisp.

I'll have to try it with my Canon to see. Maybe i'll set up the shot and try it with both the 5D and the wifes 30D and compare, but I'm thinking it'll be so grainy I wont be able to post anything

Thanks for the info

Here is a link to long exposures for the Canon 5D & some 30D info.

http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00QWU0

With long exposures, the sensor is on and charged for the full exposure time (of course). This heats up the sensor, and causes many of the photosites to react to the heat of the neighboring photosites. This reaction is recorded as a color, in the processor. This is digital noise. The sensor tends to react predictably, and will create almost the same noise, in the very next frame.

With that knowledge, the camera companies created a noise reduction process called, Dark Slide (a term from back in the film days I believe). Here is how it works.
1) You make a long exposure (say 30 seconds).
2) When the exposure is complete, the camera leaves the mirror down, and fires up the sensor for another 30 seconds, to finish the total exposure process.
3) The processor takes all of the color noise that showed up on the 2nd frame (dark slide), and subtracts it from your original exposure. This removes most of the color noise from your image.

Good or bad, that is how it works. I know the cameras use this process in the 15 second to 2 minute range. I don't know if they do that for a 1 hour (or longer) exposure. Batteries might be dead before that could all finish up.

Also: The Dark Slide setting can be turned on/off in all the cameras I have seen, that offer this function.

Hey LilKJ -

My wife fell in love with this shot - any chance of having a hi-res one so she can make it a background on her comp? I promise I won't sell it as a cover photo for Outside Mag :P

My contribution. Not nearly as nice as some of the others posted, but it looked cool when we were there and the photo didn't turn out too bad.

Suggestions for shooting the moon.

The moon is very light color. The sun is shining directly upon it.

Don't think of "moon photos" as "night photos".

Set your exposure for more speed and closed aperture (daytime settings). Meter on just the moon, if you can. The moon will expose properly, and the surroundings will be dark or black.

If you have foreground you also want to include, do all your work on a tripod. Make your second shot, to expose the foreground properly.

In Photoshop (or equivelant), take the good moon shot, and place it in the good foreground shot. Yes, this is OK.:)

You saw the moon clearly, and you saw the foreground clearly. You camera can not capture them both in one frame.

Note: I am not suggesting that you take nice moon images and place them into any old random landscape images. I am saying to take the same photograph, with two different exposure settings, then bring in the best of both images. Something like HDR image building.

I would recommend buying a remote for your camera so you don't jiggle it on the tripod, etc, during a long exposure.

Take a quick look through the threads in the Photography section. There are quite a few threads for DSLR recommendations. After reading through them, you may be better able to define what you want to do in photography, and choose the best equipment for the job.:)

I spent the summer up in Alaska guiding sea kayak trips on the Prince Williams Sound. I got this shot at 2 am as the moon rose on the other side of Port Wells from us...it then stopped getting darker and began to get lighter again...hooray land of the midnight sun.

Finished a flight at the North Little Rock airport, and was relaxing on the wing of the Cherokee when I noticed the moon. Taken with a JVC video camera on the still setting. No tripod, so I balanced the camera on the engine cowl and held it as still as I could, as the zoom level was pretty high.

San Rafael Swell. It was a full moon but the wind and clouds made it impossible to get a longer exposure. It was just too hard to keep it still, even on a tripod.
