I'm fabricating a bolt-on carrier for one of my custom bumpers.

Here's the progress so far.....

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7206.jpg

The short leg will hold the 2 fuel cans and the long leg will have the spare tire and hi-lift jack.

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7208.jpg

One of the pivot points, I'm using graphite impregnated delrin bushings.

The whole assembly will simply slip over the hitch assembly and shackle hanger mounts. 3 bolts will lock it down. I still need to add a few more braces, but it does mount solid.

The reason I made one leg longer than the other is the type of latch assembly I plan to mount. The hitch would have been in the way, besides this also give a bit more room for the tire as well.

Very interesting. I like the double swing out idea.

Very cool, have always enjoyed your write-ups and wealth of knowledge over the years. (So thanks!) and look forward to the new project.

Interesting design.
Do you have any pictures of it mounted on the rig?

I'll have plenty of pictures Saturday, that's when I plan to get most of it done. Currently I have no pics of it mounted......

fabricated the latching assembly..... even with both swung out, it is quite sturdy, note there are no mounting bolts holding it in place :D

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7211.jpg

This is with the 2 fuel cans base plate and riser for the tire carrier attached. I wanted to use a different type of latching system, but Joyce wanted a user friendly set-up.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7217.jpg

The plates overlap and when closed it is very solid

Above the latch, I'll drill a hole for a padlock. Added the round tube where the tire mounts, so it's easier to hoist into place. Now it will be a simple task to line up the bolt holes.....

Tomorrow I'll finish adding all the bracing, build the fuel can box and hi-lift mounts.... then sand and paint.....

Really nice work!

So how tight is it to the body?

Finished the fuel can carrier and added bracing to the tire carrier. Ran out of gas for the welder so I'll have to complete the rest during the week.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7224.jpg

I intentionally didn't add a diagonal support on the left side of the tire carrier, I plan to attach the Hi-lift there. The mounts will bolt the jack solid, so it will act as the additional brace.

The cans can only be removed from the inside, so when latched and locked they are safe from would-be-theives.

Do you have a way to keep them from opening the top and sucking the gas out? It might be a good to come up with a piece of metal that covers the caps. A hinge on one side and a lock on the other. Does that make a sense? Lol.

Hehe, just turn the cans around and it's more difficult to get to the caps. I do have a plan to make a strap that covers the caps when the cans are turned, but if someone was that intent on stealing the fuel, nothing would prevent them from puncturing the cans.

Turning the cans around is the way to go then. Yeah, your right about the puncturing. Anyways, I still like your design.

I was asked for measurments on the fuel carrier, here they are;
base plate width is 13 1/4" and depth is 13 3/4" outside frame height is 15". Built mainly out of 1 1/2" x 1/8" angle iron and 1 1/2" x 1/8" strap.

The 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" frame inside dimensions are 21 1/4" high and the width is 13 1/2".

More pictures tomorrow... It's all painted ready to go.

Finally complete! well almost...........

Showing the clearance between the body, any closer would not be advised.....

The secondary latch, is a padlock.....
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7239.jpg

Showing with both swung out, boy them HiLift extreme jacks look purdy.

Joyce is gonna order a FJ-40 license plate holder for me to install, but for now zip ties will do...

BTW thanks for all the complements.... now I need to build another for myself!

Whats wrong with the clearance btwn bump and body? Is it tight or grandcanyon like?

I tucked everything in as tight as possible, allowing for flex, even then you can still sustain some body damage if you back into something hard enough......

10-4 I thought it looked good to me. The irbis offroad bumper has more gap then I would like, and I thought maybe I was missing something. Yours looks good!

Hi Bruce, very nice bumper.

Don't you've something to prevent the jerrycans hitting the tailgate?

Your bumper is a nice inspiration to me, I'm begginning with mine soon.

sure is purdy . . . So, the jerry can swing out is held closed by the tire swing out? you probably explained that on one of the previous pages, but I'm feeling lazy.

A very BIG thank you to Bruce  .

It's taken nearly a year of begging and pleading, but he finally made it :clapsmile .

I really like the design. Since it's also my daily driver, I wanted to be able to take it all off for mall crawling :). There's no way to fit into a compact short space with everything hanging off the rear. It is really easy to open and close and everything fits really tight.

For now the cans are held in place by either the weight of the cans or a simple ratchet strap. Once the license plate mount comes in I'll add a bolt on strap to lock them in.

Hehe, instead of starting a new thread, I figured I'll just add to this one...

This is a carrier I built for my rig , but made a few changes to it since backing into a boulder on the Rubicon. I relocated the HiLift jack, placing it closer in and lower.

I had it up underneath the tire but it stuck out a bit far. In Big Bear it actually snagged a tree branch and bent the jack.

:yikes:

That's a great testament to the stoutness of your bumper and fab skills!

Great work and another cool idea!

Anyone know what size delrin bushings he used? Wondering if the outside OD of the tubing around the bushings is 2"x.250 or what?

I'm looking to do something similar with a single arm to hold up two jerry cans. I saw these bushings (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Custom-Delrin-bushing-Kit-for-a-5-8-Bolt_W0QQitemZ290296966886QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotor s_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item43970c2ee6&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245#ht_500wt_924) on TTORA and was wondering if they'd be large enough for that application. 1-1/2 OD X .120 wall. Overall lenght is 2.300" long. Seems a little small, but I can't tell how big BruceTS' are.
