I have been trying to decide on carrying an Axe or a Mattock/pick. With limited space I only want to have one or the other along with my shovel.
So while refining the art of procrastination during the work day :coffee: I found this:
A Pulaski Axe http://www.cspoutdoors.com/puaxewifiha.html
It is essentially a combination of an axe and a mattock often used by fire fighters. Chop a log or dig a trench all with one tool! :archaeolo
They seem to range between $15 and $100 so I'm still sourcing. Hoping to find it locally, probably at some harware or garden store.
Thought I would share as I had never seen one before...
I'll let you know if I find a good source for them.

Ok so turns out that it doesn't take much to impress me sometimes. Apparently this Pulaski Axe tool is very common and also known as a landscapers axe. $37 at Ace Hardware.
And I thought they were a rare and specialized tool !

I like that one. I do not typically carry a pick, although there are almost a requirement to do any real road building.
I kind of like this solution:

That's what I carry. They sure have gone up in price. :Wow1:

That Max Ax is nice but a little on the pricey side. Not that we get a lot here but on days of rain/slop where we wheel, a shovel sure can come in handy.
I could see the handiness of the Max Ax when camping though.

I guess I will drift OT a little bit since we are talking tools...
For probably less than $75, I have a medium length Craftsman shovel with fiberglass D handle, a composite handle full-size axe, a military issue mini-pick/shovel combo, and a Gerber Exchange-A-Blade saw (http://www.gerbertools.com/Gerber-Gator-Exchange-A-Blade-Saw-6036.htm). Seems to cover the bases pretty well. I like to have the 2nd (small) shovel for the passenger or friendly volunteer to use. It can speed things up if there is lots of digging/clearing to be done. I do like the Max-Axe for the concept of having all of the tools in one place. On the flip-side, I guess having separate tools allows a little more versatility in packing/placement and getting the weight distributed around the vehicle more.
I have a nifty little Colt hatchet/knife combo (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=CT2) too, good for splitting up wood and kindling at the camp fire.

Now that is pretty slick... :archaeolo
I do like having the larger blade on my shovel over the Max, but storage is a premium, and the Max would provide a good pick too. But, as with most cool things, they cost $$$
