Is anyone making gear sets for the new Tacoma? I thought my 255/85/16's would be ok without a change, but the I-70 climb into the mountains is telling me differently.

JT's has 4.88's available now.
And, 4.56's are on the way that do NOT require a new front carrier, this saves around $300 :)
I have an email from them that states the 4.56's will be released in April.

what are the standard gear ratio of the Taco's ?
The hilux's are geared to 3.73:1 standard, so using basic mathematics that would equate to a 4.3:1 ratio to be ideal for a 33inch tyre would it not? and the 4.56:1 would suit a 35inch tyre?
Unless you wanted to run a 33 inch tyre with a bit more low down torque and low range ability....is that right?
I contacted one of the companies here in australia and they said the same thing about the 4.5's.....around april and they'll get back to me....might wait till then and try and squeeze 34's for more driveability ......and to get my first gear low range engine braking back on my auto.....it sucks at the moment!

Carl Montoya @ JT Differentials is a great dude, and very innovative. He was one of the first dudes regearing a 100 Series  They've done a great job at staying innovative!

Most new Tacomas with the 4.0 V6 and auto tranny are 3.73's, you get 4.10's with the 2.7 4 cylinder engine.
Ours come stock with 31 inch tires so by adding 255/85R16's which are about 33.5 tall it is helpful to regear. 4.30 would be dead on stock specs for this combo BUT since no one that I know of makes a 4.30 gear set for these diffs, our next best option is 4.56.
At one point I was dead set on 4.88's because I wanted the low end power and the crawlability but fuel economy has become my focus so 4.56 is the best bet for me.

I wouldn't hesitate to send folks his way at all, great guy and a trusted shop. They just set a customer of mine up with 4.88's for 2nd Gen Taco, they were very pleased with the service.
(Disclaimer: I am in no way funded nor endorsed by JT, in fact in some respect they are a competitor, however I don't hesitate to pimp a good company :D)

This all makes me pretty happy, I got my gears 4:56 gears from JT. I just the fact that the gears coming don't require a carrier change!
Carl was a great help! Wouldn't have any problems ordering from them again.

What is JT getting for a set of gears? A shop here in Denver quoted me $2K!!! I could almost do a SAS for that much!

$793.00 + 90 bucks shipping. I lucked out, first of the new gears, when I talked to Carl he was expecting more in a couple weeks.
Great deal for me in Canada, most gear shops want your arms and legs for Toyota gears, if they can even find the ones I needed.

thanks for that mate, our hilux's come with 29 inch tyres stock, and yeah, the same thing with the 4.3's, wish there was somebody to make em.
4.56 does seem like the next best option......will be following this thread, just a real bummer that getting the front and rear re-geared costs so much!

I will for sure. Carl said about 10 days to arrive.
I phoned a shop here in Edmonton and got a quote of 1000K to do the install for both gears. Alberta Driveline do great work.
The rear will take no time, its that DAM clamshell up front that takes all the time. I wish Toyota still had the solid axle up front with the removable 3rd member.

I love KORE stuff. I'm just hoping Kent builds a few things for Toyota one day!!
The best company in Canada to deal with high end suspension and off-road parts. The owner Kevin has really helped me with my build with most of the stuff.

Certainly sounds like Kevin, I couldn't go last year but did allot of wrenching on the race truck. I will be down there this year chasing and driving for Kevin. I'm slowing getting my truck ready for Baja, to chase.
A couple of pictures from last year.

G'day all,
After some exhaustive research Ive found out that Toyota does make a genuine 4.55:1 diff gear set that would suit the Hilux and Tacoma that shares the 120 platform.
It is the Toyota Fortuner found in Thailand. It is a wagon based 4x4 built upon the toyota hilux design. In the version with the 2TR 2.7litre VVTi engine and auto transmission it runs a 4.55:1 ratio.
heres a spec sheet from Thailand I beleive where they are made -
http://www.mysce.biz/toyotaFortuner.html
Now, the only problem is whether we can find a way to bring em over. Im guessing with the currency exchange rate with Thailand, it should make it somewhat affordable.
any opinions?
P.S I have just emailed them inquiring about if I could import a pair, so will wait for a response.
