The "My favorite picture" (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197) thread is a good place to post your favorite pics, but if you just have some random shots that you feel like sharing, go ahead and post them here. They don't necessarily have to be your favorite, but just something you find interesting, beautiful, or compelling... whatever the motivation may be. Lets limit this to photographs that you took, not someone elses pictures.

So many talented photographers here -
I'll start with a couple -
This photo was taken on the Swan Valley Scenic Byway on my recent trip to Idaho. The pic isn't black & white, the weather was.

Alright, COOL THREAD! I'm loving that one of KCs T100 in that vast section of dust and brush called Wyoming. Absolutely perfect.

Hey - that's a great shot of the fence in Idaho with the mist coming down off the mountains.
The attached is my desktop background at the moment - I am looking at it while stuck in the worst place of all, the office. I shot it on my honeymoon in Guatemala. My Rover "Eore" on a back road - lots of time to explore, and the wife and I just finished lunch of peanut butter and jam spread on local corn tortillas....

Love the story, love the pic. Very nice. That is one of my favorite things about photographs - they can be a tangible link to a very fond memory or special place or person, that we can access from anywhere we can manage to keep a photograph. PC desktop, wallet, glued on the ceiling of your camper (now there is an idea!)...

Love that shot of the Albatross. I saw Jimmy Buffet in San Diego a number of years ago and they buzzed the amphitheatre in his. I read he has it outfitted as a flying mobile home complete with surfboards etc. Nice way to travel... Does that fly-in happen every year?

I do nto think so, I have been to many a Jimmy Buffett shows, and have never seen his plane do a fly over. He also has a Citation jet that his wife flys on, but does the flying of his sea plane himself. How cool would that be? If you have not yet, check out his book "A Pirate Looks at Fifty". A good read about his fiftieth birthday.

I think the fly-in happens every year. They were willing to take spectators, happier if you donated to pay for fuel. That shot I took out the open window of another one. If you like these, please check out my gallery; on the way out I got to ride in the nosecone and took pix of us flying in formation, buzzing canyons, and landing on the lake.
I'd actually prefer a Sikorsky S-38, if you could find them. Nicknamed "The Explorer's Air Yacht", the one in "Aviator" is one of two still flying (I believe).

http://www.century-of-flight.freeola.com/Aviation%20history/coming%20of%20age/flying%20boats/images/26.jpg
Or a single-engine S-39. I'm not picky.

I thought Jimmy flipped his plane a few years ago. Or was that a Goose instead of the Albatross?
justfred
04-21-2006, 06:27 PM
As I recall, Jimmy's Albatross "Hemisphere Dancer" is now a museum piece in one of his restaurants. I also think (from reading his books) that the Goose is what he flies now, and the crash was in another, smaller amphibian, a Lake?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Buffett
...doesn't mention it but probably should.
ShearPin
04-21-2006, 06:29 PM
I think the one that flipped was the smaller widgeon - probably my favorite. It was definitely the Hemisphere Dancer that flew over the amphitheatre - it made three or four passes. He couldn't have been flying, was on stage shortly after.

He flipped the smaller plane in a lake in upstate NY after a fishing trip. He and his buddy made it out unscathed, and he went and got the Goose. I think that is how the story goes. Pick up the book, it explaines it really well in the beginning.

This is what it looked like where we camped, it was beautiful without the moon. We saw a shooting start rip nearly from horizon to horizon - AMAZING.
I didn't have my remote for my camera so I couldn't take any exposures longer than 30 sec.

I'd say that picture was exposed perfectly. It evokes just the right mood. Photos with long star trails and bright-as-day foregrounds are interesting but don't really leave the impression of a lovely starlit scene like this one.

Mr. Hanson, thank you for the find words :jumping: You're right, there's something about the streaking stars and bright foregrounds that don't really capture the moment like this style of night shot. I still like both styles though :)
Hey Chris, thanks for the compliments! The warmth of the rocks are my favorite too. They were illuminated by the fire of another set of campers. The campground layout was cool because our neighboring campers were on the other side of a small hill so it was almost like camping solo in the middle of nowhere. I guess that's about as good as it gets for a 'primitive' campground.

For the 20D
Top panel: Hold the DRIVE-ISO button and scroll with the top dial. Scroll until you see the little circle with a dash in it. That is the self-timer. Push the shutter and ten seconds later, the camera takes a pictures. No shake from you pushing the button. But you are still not finished, as mirror shake is still present.
Back panel: Menu, scroll down to custom functions, select with the "set button" in the middle of the wheel.
select Custom Function 12 and set to enable.
Once both are set (and the image is composed), the first time you push the shutter release, the mirror will lock up, the second time the self timer will engage. 10 seconds later (plus the shutter speed), you image will be done, and shake free) :archaeolo

Hi Graham - I was at Cincinnati Zoo, which is one of the world's most important conservation zoos (the cheetah is Chance, a Cat Ambassador, and he is just 2 years old and very playful - right after the pic was snapped he rolled over on his back and started swatting at a butterfly, then let me scritch his tummy!! - And I didn't get to feel his tongue - the trainers discourage licking because it can, um, lead to "nibbling" which can lead to sampling!).
I went because one of my founding board members, Dr. David Western, gave a lecture and received an award, and we were meeting with the Zoo staff and some of their patrons about collaborating on some interesting conservation projects in the South Rift Valley in Kenya (one of the projects is carnivore conservation - lions, cheetahas, wild dog, etc). In fact, this am I've a call with them to talk about us collaborating on their Earth Expeditions, a college program where we'd host students at one of our projects, and they are taught about the issues on-the-ground by local African conservationists - in our case, members of Maasai communities who are running their own lodges and game scouts program. Cool!

Ya know when we were in australia we went to a wildlife rescue on Kangaroo Island. The # of injured animals they kept was astounding given the size of th eisland. They had about 20 Koala and up until early last year they allowed people to handle them on a private tour. The reason they stopped is because that facility lost 20 Koalas the year before. Turns out they got the Flu from the interations with random people and could not fight it off. Now pretty much any reputable wildlife resque has stopped the handling of koala's.

Nice to see that Turtle Bay is still living up to it's name!
The falls in the pic looks like "Waimea Falls" used to go there as a kid and dive off.
Another fun diving spot (jump off da cliff kind) is the huge rock that jets out into Waimea Bay. The water is crystal clear out there too so you might see something there also.
Then you have to make a stop at "Matsumoto's General Store" in Haleiwa and get one "Shave Ice" bradda.....and maybe walk out with a Kewl North Shore T~Shirt for your trips back home.
Have a Blast!

Sweet! That's a '73 right? Those things are indestructable. A good friend of mine had a '73 T for quite awhile, super low miles, original paint, looked like a museum piece. He sold it and bought a 993 C4S last year. Quite a different driving experience, but a pretty sharp looking car still. I had a '69 911E for a bit. 2 liter, mechanical fuel injection, 7,200 rpm redline. That thing sounded so awesome.

At 100,000 miles I had the engine rebuilt up to 2.7 liter with "S" specs.
I now have about 150,000 miles on the whole Porsche 911.......50K on the rebuild.
I've owned the Porsche 911 for almost 27 years.
When it hit the magical 30 year old mark.....it started going up in value.
I don't drive it much anymore.....it's just becoming too special.
I posted up a link to more pics at the "what other vehicles do you drive".......thread.

At one point and time there was an offroad trail that went all the way around the lake used by the park rangers, but last time I went up there it was closed down. You can see part of the old trail behind the "cabins" off the hwy.

Wil, yes, that is Watson Lake. The Peavine trail (old railroad grade) that you walked the dogs on, now connects to the Iron King (old railroad grade) at the junction known as "entro" where there used to be an old station, and heads south and is open all the way to Prescott Valley. The Iron King goes through a spectacular section of the Granite Dells that was formerly private access only, so it's a real treat to bike it or walk it. The road you mentioned is definitely closed, but a lot of it is trail now. Now there are some cool trails and a bridge upstream of the lake in Watson woods where the creek comes in - all riparian preserve.

Thanks Henry. You are so right. I am extremely lucky that it is only about 10 mins. from my house. Scott is even closer, maybe a mile or so from the lake.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. My original intent was to photograph a picturesque stream that ran below the trail at that location. After taking a few pictures of the stream, I climbed back up the hill, saw the Cherokee's beams shining through the mist, the foggy background, and ... one thing led to another.
http://static.flickr.com/89/250972083_9203b4ab7f.jpg
Am I the only one who lugs a tripod around with me on the trail? That's why I go alone so often. I don't think anyone else would tolerate me hopping out of the Cherokee every 5 feet to snap some pictures. :)

cshontz, the pic of your XJ is stellar!!
I'm assuming that's in your neck of the woods but it sure reminded me of the trail up to Linville Falls in NC. That trail was made famous in the movie Last of the Mohicans, when they had a great battle scene in the trees and of course the finale on the cliffs. Twilight and mist can really make or break a photo but you got a great, great shot. Nice work!
The other half of the double whammy is bootzilla's shot of the wild horses on the OBX. That picture is both, so perfect and so cruel. If I had realized in my 20's how wonderful NC is, I probably never would have left my home there and headed west. Thanks for putting that up....and making me just a little homesick. :088:

Lost Canadian,

Yep we dive. We actually have 5 acres of property up there about half way between Miller Lake and Tobermory, it's our summer getaway spot. Going up on Thursday actually to do some work on the property, no diving though, it's too cold yet.
If you ever need a place to set up camp in the area and don't want to stay in the park or a Motel fire me a PM and I'll give you the location.

To really apreciate ring tailed cats' huge eyes you need to see them glowing back at you in the dark when 3 or 4 of them are sneaking up on your campsite at night and you shine your headlamp in their direction.

I was going through some old pics last night and found a few. This little guy came running up to me as I walked down the front steps one morning. I actually had about 6 shots of him but this is all I could find. At one point he was on his back with his legs in the air just like my dog. I stood six feet away and watched him for 20 minutes. He stayed there while I went to work. I suspect that a lot of people feed it scraps so he's now too afraid of humans. Sometimes we have as many as four playing in the front yard.

Just a few random shots from vacation this past week. We intended on camping in the Kootenays, but ended up following through with our desire to go all the way into Seattle.
Last Monday - highway Calgary and Crowsnest Pass (Highway 22). Wouldn't be an Alberta May long weekend without snow!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/mountainpete/Seattle/IMG_0073.jpg
Just a little place we stopped for a breather in Washington State close to Chelan.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/mountainpete/Seattle/IMG_0086.jpg
Pikes Place Fish Market in Seattle. It was a last second shot but that is a salmon in the air. Market was cool - but smaller then I expected.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/mountainpete/Seattle/IMG_0113.jpg
Where I spent last night - visiting some friends who are staying at a cabin on Lake Okanagan just outside of Kelowna. Sitting on the dock by myself sipping Corona and reading the newspaper was the best part of the trip.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/mountainpete/Seattle/IMG_0141.jpg
By the way, if anyone is going to Seattle and wants a GREAT place to camp close to the big city, go here: Dash Point State Park (http://www.parks.wa.gov/parkpage.asp?selectedpark=Dash%20Point)

Not the coolest thing you'll ever see but this has to be one of best shot I've taken. Took it about an hour ago in my back yard. For you camera junkies this was taken with my new Nikon D40 with the stock 18-55mm lens. The lens was at 55 mm, camera set to ISO 200, SS was 1/200s, Ap. at F/5.6. Kinda wish I had a macro lens for this one, the light was perfect.
