View Full Version : Expeditions West XV-JP Testing and Build Thread

Scott Brady
04-29-2008, 06:30 PM
I started a new thread, which will get past the "why (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13788)" and start to show the "what".

I just spent a few hours testing the Rubicon in Sedona. I will have more detailed commentary in the Overland Journal articles, but initially, it rocks. I drove the Rubicon nine times last summer in various JKs, mostly 2-doors and then once in the prototype XV-JP Unlimited version.

Here is a quick shot with a little flex (I could not find a way to get a tire in the air on that trail, but this is close).

http://www.expeditionswest.com/vehicles/ewvehicles/earthroamer_XV-JP/rubicon.jpg

We are working on the suspension now with several engineers, but look for some proven desert race technology to be included. Next is bumpers, followed by an aux. tank and recovery systems. I will most likely have a North American tire/wheel combo and then something different for South America. Still in the specification process.

More details soon.

Looks good Scott! I almost asked the stupid question of: "why did you decide to go with the soft top over the hard top?" But then I remembered the 'other' modification you have planned for it....LOL.

Looking forward to watching this machine get built!

I scored a new Rubicon Unlimited yesterday. I'll be testing it out as the snow leaves the fun places here in the Cascades, and I will be VERY interested in the suspension/wheel choices you come up with.

Please keep us posted in detail!!

Scott.
one question,, are you going to relocate the gas lines that pass right next to the transmision ? I been hearing that it might be a good idea,. they are to close to it and it gets very hot, plus with some jks burning some people say it might be the reason.
im thinking of relocating mine.

Yes, piles of parts are accumulating in the garage. AEV has been a huge support.

The EarthRoamer conversion is scheduled for the second week of July.

We are very excited.

The build will be featured in two parts, the first being all of the Jeep modifications and the second being the EarthRoamer conversion.

And the third will be tuning and tweaking the setup from part one, with lots of cool trail testing photos, and then the fourth will be about expedition prep....

Oh sorry. I was just getting carried away there for a minute. Please resume with Step 1!

We have looked at fitting that same snorkel but quickly discovered an issue.....it doesn't fit with the roof racks we'll be using....

The racks leading arms run along the sides of the windshield....this snorkel fits tightly to the sides.....

Soooooo....no go.

That "Salad Shooter" top doesn't look so great either, buuut, it is functionally outstanding.

AEV did do a great job designing and building this snorkel, it just doesn't fit our application.

Lookin good so far Scott, keep it going, don't stop.

The precleaners don't look the best, (I personally really like it...), but boy do they work. My FJ80 used to have a good amount of silt and dust collected in the bowl within two or three days of baja roads...and given where this rig will be going...definitely a good mod to add.

Looks great Scott! Can't wait to see it in person!

Hi Scott,

I have a question about that hood. When you order it, does it come painted to match your jeep, or did you have to have it painted and decals installed after receiving it?

Also, is there any issues with rain going into the engine compartment thru the vents?

Thanks

It needs to be painted.

Rain can go through, but is that worse than mud or water coming up from under?

Hey, thanks for the response. I don't mean thru the snorkel, I means thru the vents in the hood. The reason I ask is because I would want to get the hood without the snorkel since there would be no room for a roof cage with the snorkel in place.

If you get the hood only there are matching grills that match on either side. The snorkle conveniently fits in the right hand one should you get it.

elias,, you can install a roof roof rack with the snorkel with no problem,,you just have to get the correct one like the wilderness.

also , if you get the hood only,, it comes with the side snorkel entries pluged.
no problem not having a snorkel

The bump stop coilovers are a neat design. It was easy to install relative to other kits. Just a little drilling of some bolt holes, cutting off of factory bump stops and then installing it all.
Just had to remove the shocks and sway bar to get them installed. This Jeeps suspension has a LOT of potential for travel. When the sway bar is either "unlocked" (for the front) or disconnected (in the rear) the suspension just keeps drooping and drooping until the brake lines become taught.

I'd say its an all day Saturday job for one guy or even faster for two.

I started late in the day and finished up the following day. We messed with the height a bit to try and get the desired affect. The jeep looks great!
The sway bar is MASSIVE! It should do a great job along with the bump stops in controlling the added weight of the conversion.
I also like that since they are air bumps the compression can be changed by simply adding or taking out a bit of the nitrogen charge.

Zeero
07-14-2008, 04:39 AM
Be sure to add some longer sway bar links in the front....or else when you engage the sway bar disco, the "continuous droop" you mentioned will straighten the linkage out completely, and on recompression there will be a high chance of the sway link reversing its fold, and compress in the wrong direction due to its shorter factory length.

We have tested this on our two Rubicons and have discovered that on average this will happen approximately 6 times out of 10....%60 of the time.

So with that, it was nessecary to install slightly long sway links. Now the problem occurs...never.

Just a suggestion. :)

We've done almost 45,000 kms of testing on these machines. Man are they tough, and with the right set-up, unbeatable.

Each upgrade gets a good 500-1000 kms of testing, off and on road just to ensure we can truely rely on that part for the long haul where we need it most.

Nice write up though guys, I've been following it quietly.

I've thought the same thing too but we need to remember the numbers of hits and responses on a thread are used to market to potential customers and sponsors. It's sometimes logistically difficult to post up from the road to keep the buzz. A couple of the hit and run "generator" posts may have been all that was possible from the TAT. I am trying to do my part by logging in 19 to 40 times throughout the day. Actually that is a statement of denial that I have an addiction to the forum.

I was dreaming about that thing last night.

There has been a lot of discussion on the board about how much those cost, but looking at the going rates for some other vehicles (like a Defender 110 or rebuilt Land Cruiser), I have to say the is the EarthRoamer is starting to look like a serious value as well as a premium product. As I mentioned the other day, there are a lot of people like me who are more interested in exploring than building and would pay a premium for a turn-key platform.

Still, my issue with XV-JP's remains the size. For me (that means my intended use, my family, me me me) I feel a little like Goldilocks, the LT is too big, but the JP still seems too small.

ER should make some sort of skirt/enclosure that attaches to the opened tent to expand the living area around/in the vehicle, similar to Eezi-Awn.

I'm quite certain ER did not design the JP with anything more than a very close couple in mind. I haven't been able to dream up a better new family rig than a Powerwagon/4WC combo or a JK pulling a AT Clamshell.

My initial impressions are good, and I have been surprised by the usability of the interior space. More than enough for one person, and the bed is very comfortable with the unique box spring and memory-foam mattress.

I ran the heater last night too, which easily kept off the 35 degree chill in the air outside. The 85 watt solar panel and (2) group 31 batteries have kept up with the fridge, heater blower and the laptop for a few days now. The mobile office is in operation!

You know...."Life sucks . . . [long pause] . . . for everyone except us".

I think you can probably remove the "us", and replace it with "me" (as in: you).

I'd tell you to enjoy it....but I'm sure that you already are...

Stephanie and I just made it back to Prescott, and all is well with the little Roamer. It even did well pulling a trailer with the KTM on it.

First impressions with Steph and I living out of the camper are quite good. We have a list of organizational and storage adjustments to make, but it is surprising how easily two people can live in a Jeep. The huge bed swung out over the back is the key, as one person can relax up there and work or read, while the other is using the shower/toilet, changing or preparing a snack. I think the screen room hanging from the back will be key, as it will allow all-weather and all-bug cooking and relaxing. I might look into a microwave for the back, as the ability to heat up water/milk/coffee or a quick meal was very useful in the Sportsmobile we tested.

The heater rocks, and easily keeps the entire tent cozy, even on setting 1.

I guess the most important thing is that the camper works with two people, now we just need to work on our gear lists and organization strategies. That is the key to a relaxing trip and happy travel partners.

Agreed.

And good call on the screen room too. Many times in inclement weather, I've wished we had an additional screen room like the Paha Que SUV tent mentioned in the first Overland Journal. As nice as the interior space is, and it doesn't look much different than the FWC's interior space, sometimes a little more room is necessary. Especially during meal prep. As my Mom used to say, "This is a one butt kitchen!"

I'm not sure how much you'll use the heater down south, but it is my favorite accessory. There is nothing better than waking up on a chilly morning and reaching out from your bag and flipping the thermostat on. Five minutes later, voila!, a nice warm room to change in and get breakfast going. I know your loyalty to the fridge, but there are times when one would chose a warm camper over a cold beverage. Blasphemy, I know. ;)

Scott, I'm curious how you and others are going to stow heavy / dirty recovery gear inside. I wouldn't want to store such items in the overhead area. Have you come up with a solution?

Does the screen room work well with the rear tire carrier / rack set-up?

Oh, and is there a rain fly for the tent?

Hope you're going to be at the Off Road Expo in Pomona. If so, please advise the date(s).

Thanks for the info!

I am currently sitting out a rainstorm in Leadville... So far, so good.

Will try to post some images, once the sun comes back out. :)

The mobile office is in operation!

aren't you going to be travelling with two people, though?

I plan to store tools and recovery gear under the front seats, which fortunately, has a surprising amount of room. The rest (and spares) will be stored on the rear Wilderness rack.

As we will have a minimum of three vehicles along, we are going to spread tools and spares and recovery equipment out amongst the rigs. i.e., one hi-lift, one PullPal, etc.

Currently, the tent has no fly, only waterproofing. I think it needs a fly, and ER is planning to offer one at some point, hopefully before we leave for SA

Thanks for letting me crawl around in the truck before you guys took it back to AZ. I was very impressed with the truck. Great build quality, well thought out design, super cool features. The only challenge that I can see is what you mentioned gear and organization.

My impression is that in order to build the vehicle to live in it (rather than out of it, like many expedition vehicles), some compromises have to be made in terms of storage solutions and also just plain storage volume available. That would be a bit of a tough one for me, since my wife tells me that I pack like a girl.

But if adventurers travel around the world out of a pair of panniers on a bike, I'm sure it can be done, it'll just take a bit more thought and discipline.

It is a bit early to say for sure, but I expect the mileage to be around 16 on average and maybe into the 17-18 range at sustained 55-60mph speeds

Coming back from Denver, towing a trailer with the KTM, we averaged 14.8.

Hello Scott,
Do you have any shots of the new tires and wheels. I would like to see a photograph from the front showing the offset with the fenders. Long story short I tried putting Jerry(1legs) 255/85/16 on my Jeep the other day. Only to find out that the stock rims rubbed right up against my rear lower control arms(I have Poly Performance). So I was only able to go about 2 feet. Great lesson in tire changing 101. Still thinking about that increase in fuel economy.

My AEV wheels (17" Beadlocks) have much less of an offset, than even stock. I will post up some images soon.

I opted to not have any cooking options on my Jeep. I know they have several concepts in test, including a microwave. On the Sportsmobile we used, the microwave was a very useful solution.

I am testing several stove configurations at the moment, deciding between the Brunton Vapor, the Snow Peak Two Burner and the Partner Steel.

I leave for Baja in the morning for further testing, and have a full IGT system on board, including the Snow Peak two burner and the BBQ Box.

At least for my needs, I do not see the benefit of having integrated cooking, as I want to be able to cook inside or out. :12_4_18:

Am I interpreting this to mean there is no interior cooking offerings as yet? I guess I have never researched the XV-JP very closely but I'm shocked to find this out. Are other systems developmentally mature (water heater, holding tanks, water pressurization, furnace)?

Pardon me while I head off to scour the Earthroamer website.

Scott Brady

I really do not know for sure (i.e., I am a customer, not an XV-JP salesperson), just relating that they were looking at a possible microwave option. You should give them a call and ask.

I know that for my Jeep and most of the other owners of JPs that I know, we all opted not to have a permanent interior cooking option. Even if it were permanent, it would need to be at least removable (i.e. semi-permanent). I really enjoy cooking outside, if the weather is fair.

I am sure there are many considerations EarthRoamer will need to evaluate if they will offer an interior stove solution, being that the top is essentially a tent.

Regarding if other systems are developmentally mature, you should ask them that as well. I know that my Jeep (#6) has exceeded my expectations. The water system, shower, water heater, heater, etc. all work awesome.

I will have more images and reports in the next week, once we get back from Baja

Been a while since the last post on this vehicle.......

any updates?

Ive seen an advertisement here in australia for the 4x4 action magazine...they are doing a reviw on this very Jeep, or one that look almost identical to it on their latest dvd that comes with the mag.

have they made a version of the Earthroamer conversion for a dual cab 05+ Tacoma? as I have a 07 hilux dualcab and would be interested to see what they could do with a dual cab ute configuration?

how much has fitting this affected your centre of gravity and vehicle bodyroll when offroad?

Scott Brady
05-28-2009, 05:07 AM
The Jeep is quite wide, and ER did a good job on keeping the really heavy bits down low. For example, the two group 31 batteries are at the frame level.

The Jeep did well on the Central America trip.

I have a question though. Instead of having the top extend forward past the windshield, acting like a parachute, why not chop off the section where those lights are housed and slant the forward face back? Good gas mileage is good for expeditions.

The EarthRoamer Jeep is currrently just sold as a complete truck, so the composite cabin is not available separately, just as an integrated unit with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimted under it.

The shell, which is exactly the dimensions required for the Jeep, is molded, so there's not the prospect of fitting it to a lot of different trucks, as each truck would require a somewhat different mold. So while it would be possible for EarthRoamer to supply empty cabins to mount to Unlimited (four-door) JKs, it's be tough to make this cabin work for multiple trucks.

Two reasons. The first is that the tent attaches somewhat forward on the nose cone so that means that even with the tent slanting at the front, there's full standing height in the cabin (and also the front part of the tent gets tucked into this "nose cone" when stored). Maybe a picture will help:

http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp283/mhiscox01/ER05.jpg

The other reason is that when the tent is raised, the nose cone provides a substantial amount of storage, or even sleeping space for a small child if you fabbed up a railing.
