Isuzu Trooper Diesel models

I seem to recall that some diesel Troopers were brought into the STates in, maybe, the late 80's? Can anyone fill me in on these - years, engines, models?

Mike, they brought them into the US between 85 and 87 I think. You could get it with the 4 & 2 door models I think in all trim levels. There were not very many of them brought over though, so finding one can present a bit of a challenge. There was an 86 very clean and very nice for sell on eBay a few months ago, but of course has since sold. I don't recall the specs on the motor though, I think it was a 2.2 or 2.3L 4cyl. But again, I do not recall the specs on the motor. If you can find one it would great to pick one up.

I'd love to have a 1HD-T in my FZJ80 - making it an "HDJ80". But this is an expensive engine with documented BE bearing problems. Parts would likely be tough to find in North America. A little Trooper with a small 4 cylinder turbodiesel would be great for a lot of my trips. The Tropper is a greatly under-rated vehicle.

Mike, the diesels that Isuzu imported during the late 80's were not turbo. I think you can still buy them as crate motors from Isuzu, but they will set you back about $2500.

Thanks, Aaron! That's a lot cheaper than the $^k to $10 k that a 1HD-T would cost.

Can a gasoline engine trooper ('93 4x4) be converted to a diesel? If so, does anyone know generally how and how much it typically costs?

There was a diesel trooper for sale in San Diego about 2 weeks ago on CL. It was 2-door and they were asking $3900. I posted it in the for sale section here (it was not mine).

you can get the '92 isuzu bighorns imported from Japan up here for around 10 grand. If you talked to a place like G&s Cruiser parts in vancouver they may be able to import you a half cut. its an awesome 3.1L turbo diesel motor. I test drove one about a month ago and the power was amazing and still had some smoke out the exhaust which means the boost could be upped slightly still as well!!!
