New to all of this. I have a stock 05 Grand Cherokee with a V8. Will be making some mods in the next month or so.
Would like to get out there and start exploring...anyone in the area?

Welcome. You will find lots of people in the Socal area. Also watch the events sections for local trips.

Welcome aboard! I am over in The OC but I'll echo the comments on watching for Meet And Greets and other events.
Look here and follow this for dates...

I'm making a really easy run this weekend. Check it out in the Planned Adventures thread.

there's a John Bull trail run planned this coming Sat with about a dozen stock/near stock trucks (looks like mostly h3's).

I wouldn't ever take a stock Grand Cherokee through John Bull. Just my opinion. If you do, expect damaged rocker panels, dragging diffs and using your tow hooks fairy often :sombrero:

Depending on spotter and driver experience of course, when i last did this trail a H2 did not fair so well. The challenging part is fairly short and starts aprox 2 miles into the trail.

a good spotter can make all the difference -- I was going to go but I thought I might become the strapping mule and resident spotter/rockstacker (which I hope is used as a last resort -- some are way too quick to start screwing with the trail).
Here's a picture of me going through the same spot:

I think they are going to run into planned trail maint crew(s) working on the trail that weekend. May or may not be able to go thru depending on what the crew is doing. The sponsoring clubs do have the right to close the trail if what they need to do would be interfered with by people driving it.
I don't think that is an appropriate trail for someone new to driving off road. There are other trails in Big Bear that are far more appropriate.

Exactly. You COULD do lots of things on a busy weekend, but would it be fun with 20 Jeeps backed up behind you rolling on 37's?

The Mojave Road would be a good place to start. You can run it East (Afton Canyon near Barstow to Needles) or West (Needles to Afton Canyon). It's 140 miles across easy terrain but it's a lot of fun.
This is a good place to start reading: http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/nov/stories/mojavetrail.html
The Mojave Road Guide by Dennis Casebier is an excellent resource whether you're trying the trip for the first time or the fifth.
Good luck!
Here are a few picts of the Road:

A few weeks ago I warned the trail leader about the trail mainteneance (the Waywegos and Early Broncos) as well as the Jeep Jamboree planned for this weekend. Pretty sure JBT will be open as the Jamboree has over 40 vehicles talking about running it. Not a good weekend for newbies on a harder trail -- might be a little more like the 405 than a beautiful trail in Big Bear.

Both clubs are aware of tomorrow's planned uses of the trail. I doubt they'll close it unless necessary. Was some mention of the FS having a tractor of some sort up there. Expect the Gate Keeper to revert back to what it should be.
