Okay, I think we've officially decided we want to make this happen. Additionally, we've decided we want to make it a fall trip. That settles it. I've volunteered to spearhead and I'll try to not disappoint. I want to officially determine a location. Please do some reasearch on the following options. I have included the name of the location as a link to a very basic website about the location.
Please post additional suggestions to this thread. Also, please post additional links for these locations. That is, if you have a more detailed link, post up.
I'll update this top post to reflect all the suggestions. This should get us going. As we start to clear up a location we'll start to iron in on a date. But for now, lets plan toward October 20-23.
1. Blackwater Canyon, Dolly Sods, Monongahela National Forest (West Virginia) (http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/mnf/)
-Write-up by 4x4Icon guy (Paul Provencher) (http://www.4x4icon.com/offroad/100904_canaan_dolly/index.htm)
-Flagpole Knob, again by 4x4Icon (http://www.4x4icon.com/offroad/010106_flagpole_knob_brandywine/index.htm)
2. Land Between The Lakes (Kentucky) (http://www.lbl.org/)
3. Big South Fork National Recreation Area (Tennessee) (http://www.nps.gov/biso/)
-Write-up on Joel's Visit to Big South Fork (http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/showpost.php?p=53033&postcount=2)
4. Boone National Forest (Kentucky, adjoins Big South Fork) (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/)
-Scott's Visit to BNF. (http://www.expeditionswest.com/adven...R212andFR2045/)
5. George Washington National Forest (Virginia) (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/index.shtml)
-Pics of wheeling in GWNF (http://www.davenjeip.net/pictures.html)
And finally, to whet your appetite!

WV is a viable option - sounds like it may have alot to offer. I suppose I'm leaning toward this destination ... as long as I block the movie Wrong Turn from my mind.
LBL is a hike for me at 800 miles. I'm interested in LBL, but the further the location, the more difficult it may be to arrange. I certainly wouldn't rule it out, though. I'm only one person, and everyone else should feel free to chime in regarding distances.
Boone/BSF is also a somewhat longer trip, but still viable in my opinion. We've gone down to Tellico for a long weekend before, and this destination isn't that much different. However, I'm not clear on what these locations have to offer without more sleuthing on the web.
GWNF is close, however I've been there a handful of times. While it is a really nice place that I'd like to visit more often, I don't think it is ... "exotic" enough for an EP gathering. Exotic isn't the best word for eastern US travel, but you get my meaning. :)
I'll keep an eye out for more options. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

I have no qualms against any of the above. And I'm confident in Joel handling most of the planning, but if there's anything I can do I'll be glad to help.

If i had a preference it would probably be the West Virginia area, only because i'v found myself interested in the area recently. But like i said prior, i'm flexible.
The important thing to me here is the opportunity to get a group together and meet some good people and form new friendships with others who share a common interest.

I would vote for either West Virginia (I was born there and lived there until I was 13. It would be nice to go "home") or Tennessee.
I am at best a 50/50 shot for making the trip, but am REALLY interested. Just have to make my schedule agree with my desire to go.
I spent many many days of my childhood not too far from Dolly Sods, near Weston at Jackson's Mill, the boyhood home of Stonewall Jackson. My father helped disassemble, move, and reassemble Blakers Mill near the original Jacksons Mill building. A lot of good memories there. I think I even have my name on one of the pegs used to hold the place together (everyone signed them). We lived in Wheeling, up in the panhandle, but this was a lot like a second home growing up.
http://www.wvu.edu/~exten/depts/jmill/jmh_area.htm
Fun little fact: There are cabins there each bearing the name of one of the counties of WV, one such cabin is Calhoun. Well, one day, we had a VERY close encounter with a skunk, curled up like a cat right in front of the door and from that day on, we have always referred to skunks as Calhoun Kitties. Oh, the memories....

Well since Boone has no trails, and G.W. only has one open to regualar vehicles I would say both those are out. Of the remaining 3 land between the lakes has 100 miles of trails all of which seem to be open to our class of ohv. It also looks like a great area to do some paddling. Seems to be planty of camping as well. As of now that gets my top vote on just a preiminary scan of the links you posted.
All of these are a haul coming from Florida but tenesee is the closest. I would say if we go to tenesee we should probably go somewhere near murphy since we would be inbetween the 2 national forests and be cloase to to both the tellico OHV but also the OHV area in Blairsville , GA.
Have you looked into Uhwarrie OHV in N.C.?

My initial first thought is LBL just due to the shear size of the area and multiple opportunities for recreation.
There are however more than one multiuse trail in GWNF. In addition to a few marked OHV trails there are innumerable fire roads open to licensed vehicles. Just to clarify.
Here's a site with a bunch of gwnf pics

Regarding Boone and Big South Fork, there are numerous forest service roads to explore and the O&W Railroad Right-of-way in BSF itself. Mild wheeling, but definitely plenty of hiking and camping.
Both West Virginia and LBL sound great... it seems like these are the two most favored. I'll have a better feel for WV at the end of June when I visit there. I've never been to LBL... has anyone here been there before?
The more I look at the LBL website, the more interesting it looks.
Additionally, I sent Scott Brady a PM asking for more info on the location in Kentucky he referred to in his previous post... I'll post up once I hear back.

Scott,
Thanks for the pointers on Kentucky... looks like there is a lot more to Boone National Forest than I realized.
We'd love to have you come along! The colors out here in the fall are simply amazing. Not to mention it would be great for those of us east of the Mississippi to get a chance to meet you.

Yes they are. Hmmmmm........
I've been following this thread closely since I had to cancel my trip to NC this past March. I told my sis in Charlotte that I would try to make it out again, maybe in the fall for peak week on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hmmmmm...

Flagpole is very nice but if any camping were to be done there I would have to say Meadow Knob is a better choice. I think the view from Meadow is better (no houses in sight) and it has a large open area for multiple vehicles. Its only drawback would be the trail runs pretty much down the middle. For those inclined to do so there are a few trails within a short drive of Flagpole. If Paul would come on he could tell you quite a bit more than I. For pics we have a view of Meadow Knob, driving up the VA side to Meadow Knob (Slate Spring Road?) and a pic of Dry Run (nearby trail).

My recomendation is for the upper peninsula of Michigan, but I might be biased....

I recommend avoiding GWNF in October for a trail run location for a few reasons: (1) October is when the leaves begin to change color and GWNF will be a popular destination, (2) many local Virginia and Maryland clubs will be in GWNF on the weekends, (3) non-offroaders will be in the area as well, (4) I would expect the popular trails to have some trail traffic on them, and (5) good camping locations maybe taken.
Trails in West Virginia don't appear to have as heavy of a 4x4 traffic on them as do the Virginia trails. Of course West Virginia leaves will be changing as well. But I don't believe there will be nearly the amount of offroad clubs in WV as in VA.
Something to consider when trying to pick an area for the meet.

I was planning to hit that area on the way back from WY, was going to run RT2 into it. I'v been wanting to visit that area for years, someday i'll get there.
Sorry i havent contributed to this effort in the last few weeks, my desktop went and finally got my laptop. I'll start some research also but it looks like we have a good start on it....thanks Joel.
Just out of curiosity and to help us settle on a location, how many participants would be looking for other recreation vs sitting around camp or spending alot of time on trails?
If i have the opportunity i may wet a line, i see Nullifier commented on paddling and others mentioned hiking/climbing.
I personally am looking forward to this. :jumping:

Hiking=Good. I'm always ready for a fall hike. A vehicles main purpose is to get us to a destination, so we can enjoy things like hiking. It just so happens our vehicles allow us to reach destinations that others may not be able to reach. Of course out here (East) its a little more difficult to find a remote, less touched area.

Sorry I've been out of touch on this recently... I've been in NHI Bridge Inpsectrion Training the last two weeks. Not to mention that I'm planning a trip to WV and GWNF over the 4th of July weekend. Once this trip to WV is through I'll start the planning/ringleading for this Fall East Coast trip. I'm very committed to making this happen.
Ian, thanks for the valuable input on GWNF, that's good to consider. One thing I want to avoid is traffic on the trail... and competition for campsites. Remote is the key... Big South Fork, being a still-relatively unknown location, may be the ticket. We'll see though... I'm biased. =)

Well I'll tell ya I drove up to tennesee this weekend. It was a last minute trip we threw togehter on wednesday and left thursday morning LOL! Townsend is just outside of Knoxville and that is a 12 hour drive for me! I'm guessing places like virginia will be pushing 18 hours. Lets count those out if possible.
I'll tell you that townsend is a great area to keep in mind. We hiked about 15 miles this weekend, went tubing, went to a great place that has live bluegrass music on saturday night. We explored the old town of cades cove by car and foot. We saw bear, turkey and deer. We also went to the tukaleechee caverns. It is a massive under ground cave system it was cool. Best part was we camped right on the little river. It was in a camp ground but it was still fun. There is an unmaitained road in the national park but unfortunetly I was pressed for time and did not get any info. I am going to follw up and get more info on that route.
The chilhowee mountains are right there and there are plenty of back country campground as well.

Just got back from a trip over the holiday and...
West Virginia and Virginia are beautiful! We camped on the top of Meadown Knob one evening...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/honger01/MeadowKnob.jpg
And then stayed in a campground at Blackwater Falls State Park...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/honger01/BlackwaterFalls.jpg
And while I think these areas offer plenty in terms of remote camping, they are a little far for some. I'm leaning more towards Kentucky or Tennessee for this outing in the fall. This seems the most central to the general Expo East Coast group.
Any additional thoughts?

By all means, please join in. In any case, I'm hoping for back country primitive for at least part of the trip. Sometimes I like to break up the back country stays with an evening in a National Forest campground to grab a shower. I need to make some phone calls to Land Between The Lakes in Kentucky to see what's available. I'm thinking I may make that our proposed location.

The occasional shower is good....:D
Date is as good for me so far as I can predict this far ahead of time.
For me, it will depend on the progress on the house. As of yesterday, it has the foundation walls up. Rough plumbing and slab work should be done by weeks end.
We are responsible for a lot of the finish work, and the earliest of that may be happening in October, so that would exclude me, but if they aren't needing us to do our part that weekend, I am sure gonna try MIGHTY hard to make it.
Wish me luck!

Dates still work for me since school hasn't even started yet and the syllabuses haven't taken control of my weekends. I'd potentially have to bail out early to make it back monday though.

Likewise; with school in session the LBL trip would be a bit tough on the kids for a long weekend. WV would make a much easier weekender with the kids. Don't change any plans because of us though; we don't want anyone put out from our lack of time to commit to a long drive.

Wow, this is quickly moving to a more northerly location and I'm okay with that. I've PM'd Nullifier to verify his absence (or presence if he is able to make it). I'll let you know what he says or maybe he'll post here...
In the meantime, West Virginia may work out okay... its just a bit of a trek for me. At 10 hours, it will make it hard for me to justify the trip... I'd be driving more than camping.
I understand LBL is far for all you Penn folks as well as for the VA guy, so how much better does Big South Fork, TN work out for ya'll? Or the Boone National Forest, KY. That's on the eastern part of those states and perhaps it works out better. How does that change drive times for ya?

Here's how the various places work out on my Magellan Direct Route from King George, VA:
LBL @ Golden Pond: 750 miles; 13 hr trip
Pickett SP @ Big South Fork, TN: 590 miles; 10.5 hrs
S Holly Bay @ Dan Boone: 540 miles; 10 hrs
Cave Lake (Zilpo) @ Dan Boone (northern): 495 miles; 9 hrs
Grandview SP @ New River Gorge WV: 290 miles; 5hr20m
Canaan Valley WV: 223 miles; 4hr20m
Did I miss any possibilities? LBL is highly improbable for me, Boone is better, excellent chance there. WV would make it a definite, but I realize that puts lots of other people out. Chime in; make your choice (or give alternates). I'm likely to show. If some of the "Out West" guys that always get their trucks in the mags would show I'd have to go just to see magazine material somewhere other than the bathroom!

Well, I've got some bad news... I can't make this event unless we pushed it into November which probably isn't the best idea. I have my Professional Engineering Exam the weekend after the planned trip, and I really need to be devoting spare time to studying between now and then. I had thought that the test was the first weekend of October, but alas, it is the last weekend. However, I'm all about helping organize it, making phone calls, etc. to help this trip become reality! I REALLY want to see an East Coast gathering and it seems like many of you do as well.
I'm going to suggest West Virginia. Since I can't make it and since it looks like most of you are "definite" if that is the location, it just makes sense. I have plenty of GPS coordinates as does jim65wagon. Between the two of us we should be able to come up with a decent get together.
On our recent trip to West Virginia, we camped on top of Meadow Knob and had plenty of solitude... not a soul drove by as we were up there. So my first suggestion for plenty of 4x4 exploration and remote camping would be the George Washington National Forest (on the border of WV and VA). My second suggestion would be the Canaan Valley area. I can feed more info on that as well.
Any thoughts? Lets agree to a location and start planning the finer points...
I'm really sorry I can't make it. This test is huge and I'm really committed to passing it the first time so I gotta keep studying until :mixed-smiley-030:

Joel

Appears so....i'll be going somewhere....and doing something. Probably end up at Pa's Grand Canyon for a few days.

Well, I have read all seven pages of this thread several times!!
There was/is a very strong interest by many, from many locations.
As we all know...life happens! Understandably as much as everyone would LIKE to do this...
...you know the rest.
Unfortunately with my work schedule I only get one weekend a month off.
In October it is the weekend of 14,15. My vacation time has depleated due to some personal issues, just not an option for me, for this year.
Most of the posts here where in favor of West Virginia/Virginia area.
Most did not object to moving date.
I REALLY hate to see this fall apart!!
If I may suggest we get together and finalize this for the WV location, for the dates 10-14,15,16.
Is there anyone else intersted in this? I believe it can still be done, maybe not to the extent we had anticipated...but, a good time can still be had!

Chris Shontz sent me a note about your plans to visit Dolly Sods in October and asked a few questions. He suggested I take a look at this thread too. I scanned the ten pages and saw my name mentioned a couple times with regard to GWNF, and thanks for that.
http://4x4icon.com/offroad/061006_trough/DSC01470.JPG
I'm going to blast some info here but seriously, it's just a suggestion and answering to some questions Chris has. Please don't take it that I need to see it happen this way or anything like that - just trying to help.
With regard to Dolly Sods, I have a fair number of trips under my belt out there and live a little ways from there. It would be ideal for the weekend most recently mentioned. Here is some info. I have sent GPS coordinates to Chris Shontz so the sweet spots don't get scooped by outsiders (which I guess I more or less am...)
If your group is mainly an outdoors type group that is not looking for extreme wheeling you will be rewarded with a wonderful experience in the Dolly Sods area. That weekend should be incredible for the foliage, which peaks around that time.
There are a couple spots that I have personally camped nearby that would suit your group. The only warning is that both spots are primitive and do not have any services. You would need to bring water and all that. You would however be rewarded with wonderful solitude.
Town is nearby and there are good restaurants (though not cheap...) and stores with plenty of stuff in Davis (gpscoord).
Thomas (gpscoord) is coming back alive and there's a funky store that serves decent food and some "antique" stores that are interesting.
I have provided several waypoints below. You might want to load them into a GPS Map program like MapSource (or use Topozone.com) to get them all collected together so you can see the layout.
http://4x4icon.com/offroad/070806_Blackwater_Falls/blackwater_3D_track2_070806.gif
Three of the camping spots I marked and used are on the Canaan Loop road
(past Blackwater Falls go straight from gpscoord; the loop road exits to pavement again at gpscoord).
Here are the waypoints. Again, both "wide spots" on the side of the road where camping is allowed:
gpscoords
One of these above I have used and one I simply marked as a candidate. You would have to stop at the marked spot and walk off the trail a little bit to see the spot because it was a little set back from the road.
http://4x4icon.com/offroad/100904_canaan_dolly/f6b14265.jpg
Another, which involves fording a stream is located near the base of Mozark Mountain here:
gpscoord
The ford can be done by stockers and unless the water is really high, should not cause anyone any problems.
http://4x4icon.com/offroad/021905_blackwater_canyon/dsc08305.jpg
This one is by far the most scenic but could be a bit crowded for much more than 6 or 7 vehicles/tents. Also, I have only ever seen it empty once in February in the four or five times I have been out there.
Here is another spot that WOULD accommodate your entire group with plenty of room for vehicles and tents off Route 219 at 717 and FR18:

(Movie)
It's a large clearing on a knoll and has a large field that can be reached on foot for anyone who wants to get away from the group.
This is near Olson Tower (gpscoord) which is a great place to go at sunset to see the whole area.

http://4x4icon.com/offroad/070806_Blackwater_Falls/DSC02088.JPG

Go up to Dolly Sods for dusk at Bear Rocks
Come back to Davis/Thomas/Camp for dinner

I've compiled a list of a half-dozen potential campsite coordinates based on Paul's information. I've also sent additional inquiries to Paul regarding privacy, vehicular accommodations, and other possible locations. I'm sure we'll have the list narrowed down to a few sites very shortly.

I'm personally leaning toward Camp6 if it is an actual campsite (it looks similar to Camp5 from satellite). Camp5 would be my next choice, as it looked really nice in Paul's video. I think these campsites would offer the most space and privacy of those listed.
Thanks, Paul! :)

I've received further correspondence from Paul and he has made it clear that the Olson Tower site (camp5) would best suit our group. It should adequately accommodate 5-10 vehicles with ground tents, and/or vehicle-based camping platforms. He also states that it is the most accessible from town, though still remote, and would provide a great stepping off point for day outings.
Paul also provides travel times to the Olson site from Davis, WV.
Time from Davis on-pavement: 15 minutes
Time from pavement to site: 5 minutes
Total drive time from Davis: 20 minutes

Based on the information that Paul has generously provided, I propose that we use the Olson site (camp5) as our basecamp for the weekend of 10/13-16. Most of the other sites were either unknown or ruled out with the exception of scenic camp4, which is otherwise viable, but at risk of being too small for our group.
What do you guys think - should we make it official? :friday:

Thanks for the aerial image, Chris, and to everyone for the kind words.
This is a great place to have for a destination. There are a number of things to see and do, including just sit in the woods and listen to the crackle of the fire and the birds (with nothing else!).
For those who Geocache, there are a few interesting caches.
I've been here summer, fall and winter, and it's always been great.
Just in case there's any doubt, you will be at approximately 3280 feet at the campsite so plan on the temps at night being a bit cooler than you might expect for the lowlands in October. This is the highest county in WV. This is what we wore on those dates in 2004:

This has TRULY become a "Team/Group" Effort!!!:wings:
It really goes to show the caliber of members here!!!
It has been an exceptionally busy week for me, only having a minute here and a minute there to watch the progress of this outing. I must say...I am impressed!!!:clapsmile

Any reason not to bring him?
I'd love to, but we're not sure how well a long weekend in the woods would go with him. I'd really prefer if he was out of diapers before going on such a trip. Plus, to a feral badger, he is a tasty morsel. :)
Not to mention, someone has to keep mom company. She just got a new job last month and has no vacation time yet. :(

Made another step towards hopefully making this trip. I ran the truck to FL last weekend and the Uniroyalpeicesofjunks about rattled our teeth out. Not out of balance either. At about 60mph they come out of round. So this accelerated my tire purchase and I found a really great deal.
Do you know how many 33 x 12.5's you can get in a 1st Gen 4Runner?
8 LOL
I am running over to Costco in a few minutes to get the bald 33's off the rims I will be using and the nearly new set of 33x12.5x15 AT KO's mounted. I picked up the from set for $350 including 2 spares. :sombrero: So Saturday we will see just how much pounding the floor takes to fit these with no lift. :smilies27
Actually the truck is getting a 4Crawler.com 2 inch body lift, a 1 inch ball joint spacer, 2 inch drivetrain lift, 2 inch tank lift and longer shackles in the next couple weeks.
Ah yes, the diapers... Now that you mention it, mine didn't go camping until we were through that...

I think I was with you when you took that one, Paul. Geez, they grow up fast! :)
I believe that was, in fact, their first overnight camping trip. I gave them two dry runs in the backyard before we took it on the road. They sure do grow up fast. One I can barely lift off the ground and the other I can barely keep up with his tricks!
Yes, you were with us; Steve and Jandy pulled that trip together much like this one we're working now. Ah yes, there you are...

There are a few variables for me around this trip. I MAY leave sunday for another week elsewhere.
I MAY arrive a few days earlier in WV.
I MAY stay for a few days after the gathering.
I MAY not make this trip at all, might end up out west someplace.

What is it about this trip that makes it difficult to solidify? It's still on, of course, but there has been alot of participant fluctuation since the very beginning. I suspect there are supernatural forces at work - spirits communing with us on a subconscious level, silently urging us to establish other plans. Could it be for our well-being?
For instance, I just noticed John's "maybe-backing-out" post was on the 13th page of the thread - for a trip that begins on Friday the 13th ... of October, no less! Only weeks before Samhain!
What is going to happen to us when we do go? What lives in those woods? This trip is cursed.

Starting to plan foods to pack. Beverages. Some places I've needed to bring my own firewood. Yeah, I'm still in.:camping:
I am still planning on going.
As for wood, there is some dead wood laying around the site and the IGA and a couple places in Davis sells bundles of firewood for reasonable prices. For the weight it represents, I plan to get it on my way through town. Matter of fact, I probably will make a shopping list for the grocery store and pick up most of my food there too. That way I can use my cooler to transport something else - my sleeping bag usually fits!

If you can reschedule for 2008, add my name to the list. I've been following this thread with interest because I am from NoVa but now reside in San Diego. Unfortunately I wasn't into wheeling while living in VA, but I can't wait to move back and hit up some east coast trails (moving back Jan of '08). Funny thing, I have a ski cabin on six acres in Canaan Valley. If this event becomes an annual thing we could always base camp at my cabin. Plenty of room for vehicles and their drivers. Then again, that wouldn't be roughing it, would it??

Situation still the same, were still living on one paycheck which is my wifes. I have a hearing scheduled for the 20th of this month, hopefully i'll get what i feel i'm entitled to.
I'm embarased about this guys, it was my idea that we have this gathering and through all the hard work and sacrifices everyone was making to attend i ended up having to bow out.

Hoping everyone has a blast, take tons of pics and tip a few for me.

By a strange twist of fate I'm still in for at least friday pm - saturday pm.
John, sorry you're still not able to come, thanks though for relighting a fire under this one and helping to get it all sorted out again.
:camping:
Thanks for the head-count. I 'm not following well enough to audit it so I will put my faith in you Chris.
Thanks also for the weather forecast - that's why I was logging on.
Put the weather in context. The daytime high on Friday predicted to be Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the upper 20s. Times of sun and clouds.
Saturday: Sunshine. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 30s. Precipitation change about 20%.
Here's the thing: This area is the highest elevation in West Virginia - about 3700 feet at the campsite. Though it is well shielded with trees, there will be wind when we are out and about. Also I would translate that 20% chance of precipitation to be delivered as snow if it comes.
I camped here this same weekend a couple years ago and it was very tolerable but please please be sure you are ready for cold days and even colder nights!

I picked up a new tent today in preparation for the WV trip - a Coleman Cimarron. This replaces a small, decrepit, three man tent that I have. We also have an enormous family tent that would be entirely too cumbersome for the trip.
http://static.flickr.com/115/266641490_243b45b2b7.jpg
Hoping to acquire a roof-top tent in the future. Until then, this Coleman seems like a good value. :)
:camping:
We've got the huge family tent and the space need to go with it. The small tent I got for the boys is too small for the three of us so be ready for the condo!

Winter Camping Tips (http://www.dto.com/camping/article.jsp?articleid=482)
Winter Camping Checklist
Before setting out, check your list to make sure you have every item you need.
Here are essential items that a winter camper should never leave home without:
__ Thermal socks and underwear
__ Easily layered clothing
__ Insulated gloves, boots, caps
__ Flashlight, extra batteries and bulbs
__ Signal mirror and whistle
__ Maps and compass
__ Cell phone and extra battery
__ Pocketknife (or Gerber or similar multi-tool)
__ First-aid kit
__ Waterproof matches in container
__ Candles and other fire-starters
__ Emergency change of clothing
__ Emergency food (C-rations, MREs, freeze-dried meals)
__ Water-purification tablets or filter unit
__ Snow shovel
__ Ax or hatchet
__ Waterproof bags
__ Sleeping bag (low temperature rating) and insulated sleeping pad
__ Space blanket and waterproof ground cloth
__ Cooking equipment, fuel and food
__ Water containers (insulated if possible)
__ Can-opener
__ Toiletries
Just throwing these things out as they come to me.
There is a local grocery store and outdoor supply both in the same building - it's an IGA located in Davis. ( N39 07.752 W79 27.728 (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.1292&lon=-79.46213&datum=nad83&u=7&layer=DRG&size=l&s=25) )
I am planning on getting my perishable foods for breakfasts, lunch and snacks there when I arrive in town. I am thinking it might be easy to eat dinners in town but we can work that out.
I am planning on getting firewood there as well, though I think there is a place at one of the gas stations on the way down the hill toward Thomas that might sell it too. (N39 8.83 W79 29.92 (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.14705&lon=-79.49867&datum=nad83&u=7&layer=DRG&size=l&s=25))
However you choose to do it, I would recommend each group bring a few armloads of firewood so that we have a good supply for morning and evening fires. There's not much deadwood around the camp site and town is close but not that close.
Trail Entrance ( N39 07.565 W79 35.159 (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.12687&lon=-79.58467&s=25&size=l&u=7&datum=nad83&layer=DRG) )

The title date was the original proposed date. It ultimately got bumped ahead to the weekend of 10/13-16. I put a request in to the mods via PM to have the title changed.
We have great stories and pictures to share. I took 429 pictures that I am filtering as we speak. I'm sure a handful of them will be omitted. Thanks for checking in, Mark. :)
Gotcha! Well, good deal! Getting together for adventure beats talking about it on the 'net any day of the week.
"a handful" :) that 's funny. I can't wait to see 'em.
Now the mods around here aren't your run-of-the-mill internet geeks. Bless their souls, they're acutally planning and executing trips. Someone will be by to move this sucker and change the title.

There is nothing more uncomfortable than waking up in the middle of the night to find that you've been drooling in 20-degree weather.

I tag each photo with keywords pretty extensively, so it takes a long time to get them all online. However, its worth it in the end. I'm only 1/4 of the way done, but here are a few. (in no particular order)

I would like to thank Chris , Paul and the kids for the excellent time we had. Other than the frigid cold, it was the absolute best fun. I wish we could have been there the day before for more of the fun we missed (the wheeling). Can't wait till next time!

Okay, all of my pictures are up - 388 of them. Overall, they're okay, except I think alot of the compositions seem noisy and oversaturated due to bright sunlight. High resolution versions are available online by clicking on "all sizes".
This is the lot:

You can also view the approximate locations for each picture on a Google map by clicking on the following links. Please be patient and allow these pages to load completely. There is a large amount of photo and track data being processed.

NOTE: My GPS stayed in the Cherokee throughout the weekend, so photo positions are based upon where my Jeep was at the time each photo was taken. Its still a pretty good representation for the most part.
Enjoy! :sombrero:

Nice work, fellas. Nice.
I notice that your trees don't have pointy spikes on 'em. Very interesting foreign lands. It's been a while since I've seen a leaf. :)

I have finalized the write-up to include low-res versions of all images, broken it into four pages to somewhat mitigate dial-up user loading times, and fixed teh tpyos I could find...

We're not done with this thread yet! :violent-smiley-031:
I just finished composing a reasonably verbose trip report (http://ixplor.us/index.php?/expedition_portal_trip_to_monongahela_national_for est/) on my blog (http://ixplor.us/) that details our adventure from my perspective. Hopefully everyone will find it interesting. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think! :)

Ha! Beautiful photo:

But didn't you know? If you supply coordinates, it's bad form to write accompanying directions. :ylsmoke:
Hilarious:
"The next morning, I heard the <whoosh> of our campfire being ignited, as I saw the side of my tent glow orange from the light of the flame. Paul douses his logs in lighter fluid as one would butter a cob of corn."
And another photo I like:
