Where can you still get the oldschool shovel/axe mount like the one pictured below? This one has a angle piece mounted to it, so you can mount to a hi-lift jack..

I thought Con-ferr used to make them? Maybe thats why i can't find anyone selling them..

I think it's an old Con-Ferr unit. I had one on my 4BTJ60.

I've seen TJ guys with something similar mounted to their hoods. They use the hood hinges to mount them I believe.
Maybe some Jeep specific gear sites? Quadratec, etc.?

Ok, found it!!! and it looks like 4 Wheel Parts carry their products.
Con-ferr obviously is no longer around.. but the new company is called..Defender Rack. Well defender rack sells a similar mount and here it is..

Is that a plate for a lock in the center?
Nevermind I see it clearly in the first photo.

I got one two years ago when I had the OEM roof rack for the FJ Cruiser. I welded it to a 1.75" roll bar clamp and bolted it to the rack. I got it from off-road unlimited http://www.offroadunlimited.com/orustore/PC/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=185&idproduct=10491 for $36.00.
It looked good until I got the Gobi.......Sold the Gobi awaiting an ARB with Simpson II tent.
You guy's are dangerous in here.

No build thread, but I may someday. Soon I will be posting an expedition thread for my upcoming OZ trip in June '09 that will include buildups I have done to prepare for crossing the Simpson Desert.

Yes, Con_ferr went out of business and ORU bought there old stock and started making it under their name.
I have the Con_ferr Rack and the Shovel/Axe mount on the XJ. Found the mount on e-bay.

Have you seen the Fourtrek mounts?
www.fourtreks.com
I ran the dual ax/shovel mount on the rear of the stock FJ Cruiser rack.
The rings come in many diameters, and they utilize Quick Fist mounts.
http://www.pnw4runners.com/runs/81107/800x600/11.jpg
I had to take them off though since I put the Maggiolina on.
You can also mount them to round tube bars such as an ARB or other front bumper.
That is how I mounted my Hi-Lift.
I ran the Hi-Lift for awhile on the side of the rack, but I like the bumper location better.
http://www.pnw4runners.com/fjc/main4.jpg
The dual ax/shovel mount would also work that way on a bumper.

Nope. I sold that rig to a guy on Pirate4x4 back in 2003. It went up north somewhere. Before i sold the rig, i parted out all the bumpers, tires/wheels, protection etc. If you see one in Irvine, it must be a look - alike. That photo was taken years ago when 35's on a XJ were big. :D

Yeah i've seen Fourtreks.
Im not going with Fourtreks, because im not mounting my axe/shovel to a roof rack or a round tube. The reason i want the oldstyle con-ferr type mount is because im mounting it to a flat service on our adventure trailer.
Also, another plus that the oldstyle has for it, .. it locks. I don't need a little kid to run off with my axe and get hurt or hurt someone else.

You also don't need to provide them with an easily accessible tool to smash your windows.

Tell me why I keep seeing flat shovels on these racks? Haven't you guys ever tried to dig mud/dirt with one? It's terrible to dig with one of those. Get an el-cheapo garden shovel and bolt it up there. Preferrably rusty and used. You can then save the $50 on the expensive lock/cable.
This is old-school. I had one mounted on my old 109 this way. Never got messed with...and I parked it in the city all the time.

My shovel is round $5.00 shovel from home depot and it is rusty :D It works perfect on every trip.
Michael, it's not the shovel im worried about (locking up), its the axe.. someone getting hurt and then they find me liable. Todays day and age. As a matter of fact, my shovel sits unlocked on the back of the rig right now.

Ummmm...I'll have you know that the shovel I happened to have in my truck was one of those mini-shovels from the UK...it's even standard Rover issue.
It actually was the perfect size to dig a hole just wide enough for my spare tire. Any thing wider would have not kept the tire snug.
Yes, I did the whole rigging/extraction thing slightly wrong, but the tiny shovel I did have was perfect.
Now...for digging the mud out from UNDER the truck or from the wheels, it was a bit undersized.
Yep, I learned a few lessons. First and foremost it not to go tempting fate out on the mudflats.
Now, tease away...I can take it. :D

I found something I like much better than carrying the ax and shovel, and it fits right behind the drivers seat.
Takes up about the same amount of room as the Warn winch gear bag.

It is four tools in one, and very high quality.

Moved the shovel that was mounted to the hi-lift with Quickfists from the Landcruiser to a oldschool style Conferr mount on the Horizon. Much more stout and it now locks along with my axe. My axe was locked away in the African Outback drawer. This particular shovel and axe only get used in camp only so this works perfect.

So I see now it mounts to a flat surfac, but does anyone have a good, up-close pic of how this would mount to a roofrack? Offroad Unlimited lists it as a universal mount but I'm just not seeing it I guess?

I made these mounts this past weekend using some 1" rollbar clamps off ebay, quickfists, and some 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 6" 6061 aluminum stock. All the hardware is stainless steel with anti-seize on the threads.
They seem to work well and hold the shovel/axe well. They will get a little test offroad this weekend.
