The H1 and H2 have been imported and converted for as long as they have been around but were seen as big and very expensive so numbers are small.
The H3 was introduced Sept/Oct 2007 and they are planning on bringing in 2,000 a year from their South African plant, so at this stage there is only about 1,000 to 1,500 in Oz so they are still a bit rare.

If you take the off road use as a percentage of total sales it is the same here.
Lots of shiny Toyota's, Nissans, Land Rovers, Jeeps and Hummers. Most Hummers in Oz will never see dirt but the majority of teh other brands won't either. Then there mad buggers like us who are actually using them for what they were designed for.

Agreed 100% on the never seeing a Hummer dirty here in the states. One of the most frequent, and horrific ( in my eyes ) modifications I see done is to put huge chrome rims with low profile street tires on a perfectly good H2 and turn it into a hideous street queen. Yuck.
BUT, there is some hope, not all Hummer owners are afraid of dirt. Check this guy's site out, he is not afraid to take his H2 places we all like to play in. Shoot, he should probably be a member here after you look at his rig, what he has done to it and where it has been: www.yellowH2.com

Lonely, owner here also.
As of never seeing one offhighway, you got to be at the right place at the right time. Just like any other 4by4, there are pavement pounders, OR the desertpinstriped, rockrashed kind. For being generic: there are many more others (Jeeps, Toyotas, etc) seen daily than the Hummer.

The only differance is when you go offroading, you still don't see Hummers (rarely, I did see one in Moab one time) but you do see Jeeps and Toys out on the trail frequently.

Hello,
There are a couple of Hummer and H2 amd H3 owners on this board. I have one (H1), use it as much as I can. Most of the people I know who have Hummers use them for what they were intended for. Funny, people always pick on the Hummer but when you think of the amount of Jeeps and Toyota's etc. sold per year versus the Hummer, well, not sure what the numbers are but I know their aren't too many more than 12,000 H1's ever made.

Glad to see you on the board - any Outback travel pics we can drool over?

I've got an idea, since you want hummers and I want 4x4's with Diesels and Solid axles, let's switch places of residence...
You can see all the Gm *ahem "trucks" you want here in the states, and I'll get my 70 series Porn, live and Daily.
Man I miss Australia espescialy the QLD and XXXX heavy's.

I have come across some amazingly well equipped H1's while out in remote locations. The most memorable were on Hole in the Rock. We were on our way in and they were coming out. Over the next 2 days I often found myself marveling at how they got them through some of the tight sections.
Very cool to be sure.

X2 :D
I still wouldn't mind getting behind the wheel of a H1.
They are fun to drive. I figure I've got about 500 hours of experience driving an H1; almost all of it off-pavement. I've never owned one; I worked as a backcountry tour guide and drove one as part of my job.
It takes a while to get used to the width. And if you are more than about 5'6" tall, when you look to the left all you see is the roof frame. I used to tell my guests that the hummer is big on the outside and small on the inside. So it's kinda like driving a Honda wrapped in a Mack truck.
The ground clearance under the belly is amazing. The central tire inflation is way cool. The full-time four-wheel-drive is great. The approach and departure angles are phenomenal.
The power on the normally aspirated engines is tremendously disappointing. The cabin comfort is a joke. The noise is horrific. The soft top is a pain.
Little kids wave at you. People you don't know just start talking to you without even saying hello first. On the trail, other drivers either hate you on sight or want to stop and take your picture.
I think driving an H1 is probabaly a lot like being a woman with an ample bustline: you get a lot of attention, it can be extremely useful, you cannot pretend it isn't there, and sometimes you wish you had something else.

Glad to hear you enjoy Qld and our XXXX....as they say...Beautiful one day and perfect the next!!!
I suspect I have one of the most modified H3's around from what I have seen on here and also a couple of Hummer forums. We are mad campers and I have been setting this up as a 2 person tourer which is extremely capable offroad in the Aussie bush. There are still a number of things to do but it is coming along pretty well. A ARB bullbar, winch and roof rack will be the next additions but here are a couple of pics of some offroading.

Whilst I enjoy this sort of weekend, lets see who can drive over the biggest rock stuff, what we really enjoy is outback touring. I see a lot of guys do wild mods and never drive further than their letter box. To me it is about where the vehicle can take me, where most other people don't or haven't got the courage to go to. That is what the 4WD is really all about..oh yeah..and getting be back again!!!! Guess that counts out Land Rovers!!!!!! Ouch..Sorry guys but had a bad Range Rover experience!
We typically do about 5,00kms on and expedition.
So far we have only been doing weekend

The diffs etc are standard...has a factory fitted rear diff lock and factory crawler gear in low range. Is very, very good downhill. The suspension is a 4" rancho with supplementary extended rear shackles.
Turbo has increased the torque significantly and replaced some of the mumbo lost when I fitted the 35" tyres.
You can also see the dual battery I fitted to run the engel, camping lights and inverter.

How do they hold up on the trail.
Those offhighway pictures are awesome, too bad that place is a little far...and the steering on the wrong side.

They have held up extremely well and I dont think I will have any trouble anywhere I go. I erred on the side of strength and they could probably be a bit lighter but they will not break!
I think the main area where people have trouble is the drawers particularly if made from wood. I have mine folder from sheet metal so there are no joints to vibrate loose.
There is a complete build on the hummerX forum if you want more info.

Go spend some time Over Here (http://www.elcovaforums.com/forums/). There are alot of H2 and H3 owners that go off-road, some pretty serious. It's not uncommon to see H3's on 35" Toyo M/T's (hey they fit nearly stock, with minimal rubbing) over here, running the infamous trails, exploding the infamously weak front differentials (now if only GM would put the iron housing of the alpha in the front end, add a locker and nice turbo diesel with a manual gearbox it would be a hell of a package I'd seriously consider)...

I have a 98 Hummer wagon with all the goodies except runflats/beadlocks. I'm still working on my lightbar and I'm trying to work out if I should get an HD offroad trailer or simply put a tent up top. For now it's a camping kayaking base (2 very small kids) but in the future I do plan to learn how to really use the thing.

My truck has 16.5" one-piece alloy Cepeks. I can run down safely to 15psi without losing the bead due to an exaggerated bead ring inside the wheel rim. The Hutchinson two piece with beadlocks and runflats are great until you have to repair one. It is rather specialized and most tire shops will not do it. I chose to keep a spare. One day, if I get more agressive, I'll get a second spare, probably a 17" - easier to get tires for in a hurry.
I'm close to buying a Conqueror Conquest trailer and trying to work out if it is possible to fit my big wheels on one. If so, this would be even better; I'd get two or three more wheels matching mine.

x2, to change to 17 inch Cepek 17 inch rims, plus BFG, will make the truck ride so much better, you wont believe it (ours came with the same as yours, when we switched to 17 there is no comparison.)

Haven't been on for a fair while..been busy working on the H3 and touring.
This part of a recent trip. We did 6,200kms from Brisbane to Adelaide then returning via Woomera, coober Pedy, The Breakaways, William Creek, Lake Eyre, Maree, Birdsville, Big Red then back to Brisbane.
That night we camped in the Woomera caravan park and I did a bit of work..well drinking!!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le05woomera3.jpg
I love Aussie signs..the last line is…Germans 4 ½
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le06.jpg
Next stop was “The Breakaways” and the scenery was just magnificent
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le07.jpg
Coober Pedy is a modern day Dodge City in a way. The premier opal mining town in the world, fortunes are made and lives are lost. It is so hot out here that most people live under ground..and I am not kidding. We did not have time on this trip to explore the town in detail but it is on our list of places to go back for a better look.
The hole country side is like Swiss cheese…every mound of dirt has a mine/hole along of it.

Next stop was Lake Eyre which is a massive area, 50 feet below sea level but in the almost middle of Australia. Early explorers were always looking for the “inland sea” as it gets some water in it every 10 years or so. It floods every 40 to 50 years which is the reason for our visit. This is seriously remote territory and the signs should not be ignored!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le12.jpg
German tourists did ignore the signs in the middle of summer in 1998. They got bogged in sand and tried to walk the 37 miles to petrol station/hotel at William Creek. He returned to the car but she decided to continue with 9 litres of water. Out here, summer temperatures often reach 120F. She made it about half way and when they found her, the soles of her shoes were melting according to local folklore.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le13.jpg
The region is just so desolate and has this black rock…you can just imagine how hot this gets in summer. Of course the H3 made it to the top easily.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le14.jpg
We then followed the Oodnadatta Track which runs along side of the old Ghan railway. We first saw it 12 years ago and there is a lot less of it today. Originally finished in 1929 it went from Adelaide to Alice Springs up near Ayres Rock…1500kms or 935 miles.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le15ghan1.jpg
There are some great ruins of the old stops along the way

At Marree we turned left onto the Birdsville track. Out here things are big..one of the local cattle stations (Anna Creek)is 15,000 square miles..bigger than Belgium!! Even the signs are big!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le17bt1.jpg
It was about here that things went slightly pear shaped. We stopped for a comfort break and as I went to the back of the car I noticed a bit of smoke..not good as the engine was turned off. A quick look underneath soon confirmed that leaking brake fluid was finding its way onto the hot exhaust and copious amounts were dripping from the union where the flexible line joins the hard line above the rear axle. The broken bracket that secures the lines to the diff housing looked like it might have something n to do with it all!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le18bt2.jpg
A check under the hood confirmed that the dripping fluid problem as about to be solved as the master cylinder was almost empty. Of course the resultant problem was no brakes and as we were still 80 miles from the nearest town, and it was approaching dusk, the trip was going to be slow. Wendy was fantastic…every corner was suddenly somewhere between and instant death and 5 miles per hour maximum, every ripple in the road would plummet us into oblivion, and every shadow on the side of the road was a 2 ton bull ready to charge into our path. Miraculously we made it to Birdsville in one piece and her world looked significantly better after 2 scotch and cokes!
Next morning it was to the mechanic who is a legend in these parts who diagnosed a broken brake line which he fixed in no time at all.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le20b2.jpg
With brakes fully functional again, and Wendy’s stress level returning to earth, we headed out to Big Red, a 300 foot sand dune on the edge of the Simpson Desert. This is the run up…
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le21br1.jpg
This is the cresting
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le22br2.jpg

All the bouncing around broke the mounting bracket again so it was back to see Barnsey the mechanic again…appears that I might have made 1 mod too many without extending the bracket or lines!!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le24b21.jpg
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le25b22.jpg
Whilst waiting for the brakes to be fixed, Wendy was having a look around town and found that there was a new bakery whose specialty was..wait for it….Curried Camel Pie!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le26.jpg
Wendy said it tasted fantastic. Unfortunately it did not agree with her in the long term and she was doing dunny sprints for the next 2 days.
It was time to turn for home with plenty of dirt roads in front of us…
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le27.jpg
The scenery out here is just something special
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le28.jpg
We even found some Aboriginal Wells where the nomadic tribes would dig holes in the ground which would then fill with water during the rains. The small opening would restrict evapouration and leave water for the returning tribe.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le29.jpg
Last night on the road and it was with some sadness that Wendy and I climbed into the swag for the last time on this trip. What we do know is that there is still plenty to return to see!
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll242/hma03/lake%20eyre/le30.jpg
The rig ran like a dream and the supercharger gave me heaps under foot when I needed it without missing a beat. All the mods worked out really well…especially now the brake bracket is extended!!!!

The camel laughed for 3 dasy actually and I think Wendy lost abut 2 kg's!!!
She said it was delicious on the way in.
The H3 is a 3.7L 5 cylinder petrol which has been supercharged. The tank is 90L and the red tank on the roof is a 50L spare tank which I gravity feed into the main tank.
My consumption overall was a bit ordinary as this is the first trip since the supercharger and engine mods have been done. In the early stages I used a lot of the mumbo pedal and paid the price as the over all trip economy was 20L/100kms. The last 1500kms odd kms from Birdsville to Brisbane I sat on a steady 100k/hr and got 15.3 l/100 which I reckon is fantastic for all my mods, 35's etc.

I promise not to tell...my lips are sealed!!!
One of the 4WD magazines here in Oz took a H3 and a Jeep Rubicon on some of the tracks I just did and after the first day, everyone wanted to ride in the H3
I was talking to the photographer who did that trip and he said the Jeep felt like it just wanted to wander all over the dirt roads and had an alarming habit of jumping onto the wrong side of the road on the corrugated sections.
The H3 was soooo comfortable..and funny you mention the heated seats which I suspect might be a big winner in ALberta!!! I did not think they would ever get used here near the tropics but my wife has a back problem and she loves it on long trips. Turns the heat on her lumber region and it really helps! And there was a fair bit of pressure on her on her lumber region after the camel pie!!!

I decided to make my own custom airbox after the snorkel was fitted.

Then you are in luck. The 09 H3 Adventure has front and rear lockers plus the iron front housing. :sombrero:

Hey Nugget:
I always look forward to your posts. I used to subscribe to Aussie 4WD Action and I've seen your posts on the Hummer Network.
What do you make of the new lift laws being discussed in NSW?
Thanks Rick...4WD Action have just done a follow up on the H3 which should be in the mag in the next 3-4 months.
The NSW thing cam e right out of left field..they have backed off for now but I wonder if it was a testing of the water as they went much further than any state had previously indicated that they would...in view of the state governments wanting to have a uniform OZ wide approach, I fear for where it may be heading

Wayne, The custom Supercharger & air box looks nice. I will have to check it out next time I'm 'down there'. I'm shooting for September of next year.
Bring on the Brekky Creek!

I picked up a copy of 4WD Action the other week and it had the new feature on the truck. Funny thing was as I was reading it, on my lunch break while on the road, a blinged out H3 owned by a known local scumbag came screaming into the carpark. Sort of ruins the image of the H3 abit.
Nice truck BTW. Love seeing people thinking outside of the box.

Thanks mate..I also wrote the article on "Dust" in that edition and the Double Island article in the current #144 edition.
Sorry I haven't been posting as much but I have been doing freelance writing for the magazine on our trips and they don't want them posted around.

Hello, new to the forum. 2000 Hummer H1 soft top with a Silver Eagle Military trailer. Based in central California. Most travels take me to the south deserts of California and into Baja.
Trying to make time to get to the Expo next month. I have the mil spec flat bed single axle trailer made by Silver Eagle. I am looking for a camping module to place on it that will include storage, extra fuel, kitchen and a roof top tent. Maybe Adventure trailers will have something.

Hey Fresno -- you ever see a black humvee cruising around your area? A friend of mine lives there and has a hot-rod cummins soft top. He's a super cool guy and a good mechanic if you ever need a hand. Hopefully I'll see ya next month.

Hello from Alaska.
I made the mistake of buying one of these for my wife last year. She has an 06 with I5 and auto, basically stock. This is the 2nd one.......
An o6 with 4 inch rancho lift, 37 inch tires and manual 5 sp tranny.
Good thing its a standard with the 37's. I can keep the revs in the power band with the little I5. It does great off road in low range, just throws mud all over itself. After the arb bumper, winch and snorkel mods it will be time for some fender flares.
Regards,
Jim
