Wow, that's an amazing shot Chris. How bad were the mosquitoes? :-)

Thanks! Not bad at all. We were there for two days, and had no need to use deet, off, skin-so-soft, or insect repellent of any kind. The smoke you see in the air is our steak cooking on the fire.

Fred,

Did somebody fix the solar lights at the World Beater Mine Cabin?

When I was last there, the solar panels had been stolen.

Yeah no kidding! We tried camping out inside our motorhome on one of those ferry's and they wouldn't have it. My dad snuck down there to take a nap anyways when they weren't looking :hehe:

Thanks Super. When I camped with the camper shell I had the coolers bungeed to the sides of the shell and the dog rode in the middle "corridor". Sometimes the small cooler would also ride in the back seat for easy access. I don't run that set up anymore, fortunately I've acquired a Four Wheel Camper now and everything fits nicely.

Yeah, they lock the car decks down since they consider it "open water". They have a limited number of state rooms and the general seating area has reclining seats but there were a number of passengers that opted to set up their tents on deck. This particular sailing stopped at a number of coastal towns before arriving in Bella Coola. It left late Saturday evening and arrived Monday morning.

I'm booked on the 15 hour day sailing from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert in 12 days from now.

A few years back I rented a Hino FB1817 to go camping and quadding about 80 kilometers north of Lillooet, BC along the Fraser River. We stuffed it with three quads, a dirt bike and lots of camping gear. At night time, we slept inside.

Good thing is wasn't the Queen of the North when she went down a couple of years ago!

We took the Queen north from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, and then out to the Charlottes in 2003. For the two night legs we had a small stateroom (2 bunks and bath), while the dog had to stay on in the car. PH to PR was nearly 24 hrs with the intermediate stops at places like Ocean Falls (at 3am).

If I had been on the Queen when it hit the rock, I would have been torn between wanting to get the dog from the car deck, and seeking safety in the lifeboats. 2 people went missing, though I don't know if they ever confirmed how and when they drowned.

I used a bivi sack to sleep outside on a deck chair on an Alaska state ferry a couple of decades ago.

We are both adjusting well. It's really not all that hard to get used to as far as camp is concerned. This time out we tried bunk bedding it. I slept up top and she slept down below with the dog. Worked out good and everyone had plenty of room. It's more of the road adjustment of not having the cruiser with the trailer. So far so good.

PS, i cant ever imagine climbing some of those rocks!

our camp setup depends on our mood and destination. If the trail is unsuitable for our aliner we will plan to make camp with the sportz tent attached to the back of the TACO. Both have their advantages, though we are partial to planning a trip on fire, logging, or forestry service roads so we can bring the aliner.

Here we are up at Northfork campground near Randal Washington with the sportz tent 8300:

http://www.accrete.com/p-tgl/taco/pix/taco/NorthForkCamp00.jpg

and here we are at Yellowbottom Camp in the Qurtzville Creek area in Oregon:

http://www.accrete.com/p-tgl/taco/pix/OR_QuartzvilleCrk2008-07/QvCrk00.jpg
and our "backyard":
http://www.accrete.com/p-tgl/taco/pix/OR_QuartzvilleCrk2008-07/QvCrk03.jpg

Both sites have no drinking water or hookups...so bring it all with you if you visit!

Happy Trails.

One of my favorite places in the state of Washington.

There are a lot of very nice pictures in this thread, I like it.

Simple and easy. This is as far away from everyone as I can get within a 30 minute drive. All I need is some food, water and a hammock. I always have those stocked in the pelican case in the jeep, so camping is pretty easy.

These two pics actually came from a surfing book that was being made while we were camped there. The surf mag had brought half a dozen pro surfers, to get some material for this new book on "secret spots".

Our campsite is the closest one in the foreground with the pop top VW van, the white sedan and blue tarp. This was taken back in '83 when the spot was virtually unknown and had recieved no publicity before these shots were published. A film crew went there in '81 but got into a fight with some of the other surfers there over the possible exposure and were literally forced to leave....the story went that they even had some camera gear smashed in the confrontation. So when these boys arrived they were extremely cautious about who they approached. We thought it was hilarious........after a couple of weeks we were best mates but anyway the pics speak for themselves.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8d732b3127ccec54fe95ba28d00000040O00EcMWrVmzZMg e3nwI/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D480/ry%3D320/

I was working on a lobster boat on that coastline at the time and many of the boat crews knew about this spot. The other guys camping there shown in this pic had also called in on their way home at the end of the lobster season. Red Bluff. Very magical. Unbelievable fishing and that small stretch of sand in the corner is the only spot for hundreds of miles north or south were turtles can come in safely to lay their eggs.

The first trip there was for 2 weeks and we had it to ourselves with 6' waves.....only saw one other guy who was there fishing in the whole 2 weeks. A friend just went back a few months ago and told me that there are cabins all over the hill now and they charge you ridiculous fees to even sleep in your car.

That's progress I guess but it was such a fragile place to begin with. I sure hope it's well managed.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8d732b3127ccec54f60cbe2c100000040O00EcMWrVmzZMg e3nwI/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D480/ry%3D320/

If you're interested it's about 70 miles North of Carnarvon on the West Australian Coast at the top of Quobba Station. The waves in the first pic are about 6' and 10' in the second but it holds to about 15'.

Regards John

Here you go thought you guys might like these. this is about as far from civilization as you can get in North America, Noatak River, Alaska. It took me and my dad 13 days to go 360 river miles. Absolutely great trip.

I found Cabin Lake on the Mussio maps. It's in the uplands between Bostom Bar on the Fraser and Meritt. I assume you get there via the Petit Creek FSR out of Merrit?

I've spent a night at private campground on the Fraser near Boston Bar, and also at a FS rec site off of 97C near Merrit - that was in open grass lands. Also Otter Lake PP to the south, Logan Lake town park to the north, and Manning PP further south.

Hi! This seems like a decent place to introduce myself. My wife and I have a 2004 Sportsmobile, built on a Ford E-series van, with the gas V-10 engine, and a Sportsmobile 4x4 conversion & pop-top.

We love camping in the middle of nowhere, and avoid official campgrounds. I'm especially fond of deserts.

We started coming off of the Coquihalla at the Juliet turn off exit 240 and headed past Murry lake going north on the Murry Lake FSR. We then turned northwest on a unnamed spur road and up Petit Creek FSR to Cabin Lake. On the way out we took Petit Creek FSR to the Spius FSR and over to Uztilius FSR and finally to the Anderson Main FSR into Boston Bar. We could have gotten there from Merritt but, we try to take as many non paved roads as we can which adds to the adventure.

On the way out we took Petit Creek FSR to the Spius FSR and over to Uztilius FSR and finally to the Anderson Main FSR into Boston Bar. .

The private campground that I used while driving up the Fraser was there at the mouth of Anderson River.

To navigate forest roads like this I depend on a combination of the Backroad Mapbooks and my GPS. The GPS is simple handheld unit, without Canadian roads. I have downloaded the major roads in BC as tracks. So between looking at my track compared to these, I can usually place myself on the map. The most challenging stretch was when I drove east from Ashcroft on Barnes Lake Rd. Without intending to, I ended up on Indian Gardens. It's when I start encountering mud holes and snow drifts on the spur roads that I start wondering if is time to turn tail, rather than hope I can continue on through to the next main.

My wife, kid, and I managed to get out and enjoy some fall colors this past weekend in Minden, Ontario, Canada. We drove 2 hours of slow rocky trail to be alone and ended up at this lake campsite.

It rained all night but the sun came up in the morning making for a beautiful Sunday. We started the day right with quaker instant oats and spent a lazy day digging with sticks and exploring the waters edge. My daughter saw her first ducks and chased a turtle and a few frogs.

Never underestimate the entertainment value of throwing pebbles into a body of water too a 2 year old.....

Introducing myself here with this post, my vehicle is a 2008 ford escape hybrid (as seen in the above photo)... no performance mods, but i've added a CB radio, police scanner and radar detector as interior mods. It's just enough car to get me where i'm going, unfortunately not the best offroader out there.

Hopefully this place won't cost me too much money in new vehicles/upgrades!

Here you go thought you guys might like these. this is about as far from civilization as you can get in North America, Noatak River, Alaska. It took me and my dad 13 days to go 360 river miles. Absolutely great trip.

Very first camp on the river
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b367/4runninfun/camp1.jpg

Camping out on the tundra, we actually saw a wolf not too far from this spot. He sure didn't stick around for anything.

The Noatak must have a really fast current to cover that many river miles in 13 days in that craft. How many hours per day did you spend on the river? The most I ever paddled in one day was 58 miles on the South Nahanni River just upstream of Virginia Falls. It had a very swift current and no rapids that required scouting.

No... and then YES! lol. This was me and my dads first water trip like this. up in the headwaters we only covered about 10-13mi for the first few days, we spent very long days on the water (like 12 hours). we were concerned that we weren't making enough time each day. We got about 1/2 way though and then it rained for a couple days, the water came up about 6ft over night and then the river was rockin. we did 40mi easy the next day. then we didn't have to spend nearly as many hours on. it was a great trip we only saw 2 other groups the entire time. :REOutArchery02:

So I guess camping in a vehicle is the norm? I guess it saves weight/space for a tent plus the set up and break down thing...

Only picture I have you can barely see tents because of the 20+ rigs we have Riding at River Rock in GA. This is how we are normally camp. Once I start doing vehicle travels I might just put the seats down and sleep.

This was last week at Powerlines Overlook in Nevada between Ash Springs and Rachel. I was running a Buddipole and Yaesu 897d on HF 40m.

This is out by Cuddeback Lake. The camo netting gives some shade and stands up better to high winds.

Thats a insane radio setup! What were you doing out there? Whats the computer for? :Wow1:

Thanks, I just got my HF General license in August, so I went all out. It was a huge cash outlay for the setup. It is definitely a lot more fun than 2m simplex and playing with repeaters. I made contacts in Texas and South Carolina on 20meters with 100 watts into a Buddipole. The computer, 1ghz Toughbook is my offroading computer with all my mapping and logging software for the radio. It's not mounted in the Jeep or Xterra.

Here are some of our camping sites. Because the vehicle is self-contained and doesn't require external setups we rarely spill to the outside. This for a couple of reasons (unless there is a football game on). 1. We usually travel in one direction rarely establishing a base camp to come to every night. 2. We may spend the night in uncommon places--parking lots, just off the road, or someones driveway to mention a few. 3. Sometimes in the dark we just park somewhere not knowing what is around us until we wake up the next morning--then say, "This is nice, lets go for a hike or bike ride around here today." The flexibility and freedom of having a "Stealth and Self-Contained" vehicle.

Lol. Yea that thing is my storage locker. It's a stowaway swing out storage box made from kayak plastic. I put everything for the campsite in there. It's a lot of weight out from the rear axle but with the airbags and my custom coil springs it rides nice. You can even turn it into a super large ice chest

True indeed, we used to have to check the weather and fold it up inside if it was going to be wet. That tarp has been retired since that tent now resides in my backpacking gear (that tarp weighed 20 pounds).

I've camped there before. Kids had a great time running around the rocks while i set up camp.

My scouts are down in Goblin as we speak. Wish I could have gone, but I've spent 3 of the last 6 weekends in Moab and needed to get some stuff done today.

High Arctic survival shelter (Quinze)

Dude you have been in some serious stuff. Both shelters look like they would take a long time. I was taught how to build a snow shelter on a side hill but never on flat ground and while they do share the same logic I can not imagine trying to scrape up that much snow to do it on flat ground.

Here is a picture during a packing trip. not really of our camp but our camp was on our backs. This was the last few miles of a 25 mile hike. every one was taking pictures of a bear and cub. to bad they none of them had decent zoom capabilities. It really made an awesome ending to the hike.

The snow shelter takes (overall) more time but the actual WORKING time is less - and it is a lot warmer / uses less to heat. In the high arctic the winds pack the snow well so you can (attempt to) build an Igloo. Further south and in treed areas it usually doesn't get packed enough to cut into structurally useable blocks. Use the "settling" periods to build your signals etc or to rest in a hasty snow trench (if deep enough) shelter / windbreak behind a low snowpile wall. The leanto takes a lot more physical effort and time as well as a plentiful supply of firewood. Avoid axes - break the trees and branches manually and use saw for fine tuning. Key is a good long fire (same length as shelter). A 12' by 12' piece of 0.5 mil poly (painters plastic sheet) and a couple of space blankets can dramatically improve wind resistance and warmth. Once a basic frame and some roof trusses (?) are done lay reflectors on top then plastic sheet so it hangs over the front rail to the ground and meets the ground in the rear. Gather ends to stop wind entry. Then place normal amount of roof materials - don't skimp thinking plastic will do the job - it can tear and the extra wood provides a thermal mass. Also build a thick reflector wall against sturdy uprights on other side of fire - will allow wood removal as it dries from the front of the reflector and into the fire itself. Also don't skimp on the sleeping platform (8-12" high) and boughs. I've used one at -40 and didn't crawl into my sleeping bag until 0300 - was not cold enough to need it. The plastic drape in the front helps keep heated air inside - just don't overdo it on the fire (make it a good long pace away - about 3')

For flat-surface powder snow shelters pick a spot near a deepish area of snow then shovel it into a pile about your height (say 6') and twice that in diameter. Move more snow in from nearby. Can use the bag from your sleeping bag placed over the curved end of your snowshoes (draw string tight to keep in place) as a shovel if you don't have one. Best with 12" or so (or more) of powder on the ground. Let stand 8 hours or more. Repeat the shoveling as you move entire pile to a spot next to it (the shoveling and replacing into a new pile breaks the outer segments off all the snow crystals so it 'sets' closer together - simulating what the wind does as it blows snow across many miles of tundra). Let sit 8 hours. Return pile to original spot - it will now be smaller (likely about 9' dia. and 4.5' high) and denser. Place some twigs about 6-8" into the pile all around at several heights. Carve out the interior and pile next to the shelter. When you see the ends of the sticks you are close enough to the outer surface without breaking through. Best to dig upwards after inwards so you can leave a sleeping shelf and have a cold well by the door. When happy with result exit and use the excavated snow to build the entrance dome. Carve a tunnel through into the cold well. Throw any excavated snow back on the main shelter. Add a single 8 hour survival candle for light/heat - good to raise temp from -40 at the cold well to almost freezing or even slightly higher at the roof. DON'T seal the entrance - just have it extend out so the wind doesn't enter. You need some air exchange! You can always place small pile or blocks (if any exist) or a pack etc across it - just leave several inches open at the top. For about 2-3 days the structure will 'breathe' until an ice layer builds up on the interior from your exhaled breath moisture (faster if heat is high) and SOMETIMES you can scrape another 1-2" out of the inside and get a few more days - depends on how accurate your initial excavation was...

Roof awning consists of two tent poles, and ties onto my roof rack. I bought it at sportsmansguide.com a few years ago for about $30. I keep it in my truck all the time for these occasions. They seem to have discontinued it now...

It does well in the rain, but can be a bit of a hassle in strong winds.

Give OK credit there, did not know it had that landscape.

Eastern Oklahoma has some pretty mountains... they burst into color in October... truly a sight to see. Oklahoma shares the range with Arkansas. Western Oklahoma has a few mountains, lots of open plains, and a few interesting geological formations. There is also lots and lots of history there, with all the Native American tribes. Stay tuned... myself and some of the other central states folks will be putting a trip together for sometime in the fall.

Nope, our original plan was to drive up the bottom and camp there. We had to change it at the last minute because they opened up the flood gates upstream to keep the dam from breaking. :Wow1:

Early fall in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreational Area (SNRA) where dispersed camping is permitted and even encouraged. Using a camping van like the PW Traverse allows one to set up camp cleanly and quickly. I like clean and quick as I rarely stay in a spot longer than one night. I like the journey more than the destination so I move around a lot.

The first photo is a spot north of the ranger station. The second is Little Wood Creek which is 100' from the van in the first photo. And the last photo was a spot I found just exploring one of the gravel roads. I stop, raise the top or not, get my chair and I'm good to go. :)

One of the great joys about living in Idaho is the abundance of dispersed camping opportunities we have here. However, it's been too long since I went down to southern Utah and the whole Color Country area so we're taking off in early June for a couple weeks, just me and my 10 and 12 year old boys. Will grab a few more photos then. ;)

Very nice. looks like a lot of fun. was there plenty of off road travel through here?
I am thinking of a trip into Lost coast soon. I have been researching roads and trails the last few weeks and might try for mid fall or so.

Nice shots Ben, nice choice in rigs too. Not a lot of love for the "rolling computer" here on ExPo, but they are fantastic vehicles. I miss mine a lot. That bastard KSuttle is now tormenting me with photos and videos of my old truck :-)

Here is mine near Dance Hall Rock:

Two weekends ago were invited to camp in a friend's back yard of his weekend home on Orcas Island, in Washington. He said bring the enduro, the hardtail, and sea kayaks. His family owns about 100 acres and he's built trails on it.

Not bad for lawn camping.

Then Memorial Weekend we headed thru the Cascade Range taking FS roads from Winthrop to Oroville and found some solitude with a vista.

I really don't like the Honda Element, but I really dig those E-Campers. What size tires are you running, definately doesn't look stock. How durable has it proven to be? My concern would be (amoung many other things), the durability of the running gear over rough roads (ie, a-arms, bushings, steering racks, shock mounts, driveline, cv's, etc...)

That would be blown up on my wall fairly large if one of those was my Van! That is cover material right there!!

I'm surprised to hear this? Did he tell you why you werent allowed to camp in a hammock? I've never heard this before and if there is trees around, my wife and I usually set one up to kick back and relax in
