I saw these things as well. I also wonder if they would fit on the Frontier as well.
It is nice to see some more aftermarket stuff for the 05+ Pathfinders.

I am sure the engine, trans, and the Rad. skid would be the same for the Frontier, X, and the Pathy.

They have them for the Frontier now.

Wouldn't it be better to have steel skid plates as opposed to aluminum? I know the aluminum would cost less, but the steel ones should be stronger/ more ductile if they aren't too thin.
Also, do you know what the cost is for this stuff?

Thanks anyways, I'll take mine in steel.

Better? Good question. There are certainly some advantages to aluminum that steel can't offer. Light weight, higher strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance. But aluminum is more costly.
Steel skid plates can bend, as can aluminum plates. These plates in question are 1/4" thick.
I think the best benefit here is the corrosion resistance and, in second place, weight savings. You'll never have to repaint aluminum plates like you have to with steel (unless they're zinc coated, I guess). I'd like to own a set of these aluminum plates.

Well, I did take 2 materials classes in college. One thing I can tell you is, aluminum does not in fact have a higher strength to weight ratio than steel. Good aluminum is better than cheap steel, no doubt, but good engineering grade steel does have a virtually identical str/ weight ratio as compared to aluminum.
In 3 dimensions lighter aluminum structures can be made which will have a higher str/weight ratio, just like an I-beam has more strength than a plain rod. This would not come into play with a skid plate.
If the steel plate is heavier than the aluminum plate, I can guarantee it is going to be stronger. So really it comes down to, do you want super strong skidplates, or lighter but decently strong skidplates.
Steel offers the following advantages: Greater ductility, higher fracture toughness, and more vibration damping. In addition steel holds up a little better under high temps, although I'm not sure if any of your skidplates would be getting that hot.
In laymans terms, steel is better at bending instead of breaking, and if it does crack, it is more resistant to the crack spreading that aluminum does. If you want to talk specific numbers, I could probably dig those up to support my claims.

These skids are made by Rasta4x4usa.com
I am thinking about getting them because:
A. I really don't see me putting myself in a situation where I would be breaking them (I may come to regret this statement)
B. I had a bad experience trying to get my bumper from Shrockworks
and
C. They are lighter
I wonder exactly how much lighter they are....

I also like the fact that there is someone else making products for our trucks. It seems like the last few months there has been a lot of new stuff coming out.

I think it has to do more with what is best for your needs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I wonder also.

According to the guy at www.4x4parts.com they weigh 105 lbs. That is for the full set.
How does that compare to the Shrocks?
mcm4090
07-23-2008, 10:53 PM
Radiator skid: 37 lbs.
Engine skid: 29 lbs.
Transmission skid: 43 lbs.
Transfer case skid: 24 lbs.
Gas tank skid: 42 lbs.
This is off an Xterra and the Frontier has a longer T-case skid so it would weigh a little more.

Clue me in. I am well aware of the KMA problems, but want to know more about the Shrockworks problems some have been having.

Crappy customer service. I was promised at least 4 dates and not one phone call or email to let me know it wasn't gonna happen. For me, a phone call or email goes a long way.
The last straw was when I explained to him that I had just returned home from Iraq and I would be moving down to Ft. Benning, GA so I would need the bumper. Mind you, this was 10 or 11 weeks after the order and he told me they would be starting it that day. I needed the bumper since I wouldn't have an address to send it to. So he promised me it would be done before I left but they wouldn't be able to powdercoat it. I settled for that and 4 days after the supposed ship date I emailed him to find out they were still "working on it."
They STARTED building the bumper 11 weeks after I paid for it. That just seems a bit absurd. I know it is "custom stuff" but that is a bit crazy. I feel like they got an 1100 dollar no interest loan.
That is the reason why I LOVE when other companies produce stuff for our trucks.
Now I am giving KMA a shot at making me happy. They are 2 hrs from Benning so I can just go pick it up/have it installed. We will see how that goes...

Just for those who are interested in KMA customer service. Even though I don't own a single product from them, I am one of those people who ask a million questions first, then buy. I email'd Kyle at KMA on a saturday mind you, and he reply'd that weekend!
Adam: Thank you for the inquiry. We usually ship to California two to three times per week. Freight to 92867 would run $130 to a commercial address, $262 to a residential address, or $130 to terminal in Bloomington (about 40 miles away). You could mount lights on tops without ordering the light bar. You'll just need to drill a couple of holes where you want to mount them. The bumper only (non-winch mount bumper) is $420. Regards, KyleKennesaw Mtn Acc Inc.
i asked him about payment, or if they have plans, he reply'd again in a quickly matter stating that they would gladly take half the payment first then charge you the rest the day they are going to ship your product. That sounds reasonable to me.
Sorry to go off-topic from skid's to bumpers, but just wanted you to know how much i like their customer service.

Last fall I was in serious negotiations and bouncing ideas off him. A major power-outage that killed 1/2 our state put a HUGE dent in my funds designated for the Bumper, and only recently am I getting the funds back together.
However, he DID entertain all my thoughts and questions, and was very patient. I actually feel damn bad about not ordering, but other necessities presented themselves at the time that took priority.
And at *about* $900 for the Multi-Carrier bumper, I'm sold on it before the Shrockworks. And because I need a rear bumper fairly bad right now. lol
Oh, and my sympathies for being at Benning. Spent my entire enlistment there.
Back the regular thread, sorry for the hijack. :coffeedrink:

No cutting needed. The front clip is removable. On the SE and NISMO the front bumper and the front clip are separate but on the LE the front clip and bumper is one piece.

I actually had the OEM skid plates Installed on my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. I purchased them from Peoria Nissan. They have held up very well and have provided quite a bit of protection over the last few years. I have included some additional information below.
The engine cover skid plate is part number 50842-ESPFR and listed for
$14.72. The transfer case cover skid plate is part number 50884-TSP00 and listed for $14.02. The fuel tank skid plate is part number 50890-EA500 and lists for $105.39. You will also need to order 13 skid plate bolts, part number 01121-06561 and they will cost around $.80 each.
Installation is very easy. A long extension is needed to reach the one 12mm bolt up by the driveshaft on the fuel tank cover. It is the only bolt that will take close to a minute to put on.

Why leave the muffler uncovered? Heat?

Why leave the muffler uncovered? Heat?
Yep, heat. In fact, several folks I am aquainted with have heat damaged (melted rubber) spare tires slung under the truck and too close to the muffler. This has been a consideration mainly on larger-than-OEM tires that take up more room and thus nudged too close to the muffler when snugged up tight.
