I've got one in my taco, I think I paid about 40.00 for it though, which was still a smokin' deal! Thirty bucks is a crazy deal! I like mine alot, works great! I'd say pick one or two of them up!

Are there any more reviews on this power inverter. I'm seeing this product being discontinued but, a local guy is selling one for $50. Wish I could have got it when it was $30 at costco. Should I pass or snag it? If you are wanting to know the use, mainly to air up the mattress, run cell phone and battery chargers, etc.

I ran the blender a couple times this weekend with mine.

Hmm. . . I picked up one of these for $30 in a D.C. area Costco seems like February (?) So they've been on closeout in different areas for a while.
I've used mine a good bit. It's definitely worth $30. But, for light loads, there may be better choices. Mine doesn't seem to be all that efficient for low-draw use.
My standard test is to run a 13W compact fluorescent off of a 12ah gel-cel until the battery is drawn down to 10.75 volts. I have a smaller 350 W inverter that runs the light for a good 15 - 16 hours. The big Xantrex only goes about 10 hours. On the other hand, it WILL run my 700 W microwave, which a couple other similar units I've tried won't do. The AC it produces isn't exactly on frequency (varies between about 58 and 62 Hz) -- but I guess they're all like that in these days of inexpensive mass-produced electronics.
Also, it seems to work a little better when I've got the engine running -- it likes 14.5 V better than 12 V. (By this I mean it holds up closer to 120 V, with less hash on the output, and seems to stay cooler.)

I'm located in the middle of two costcos. Unfortunately, neither had them. I picked up the xantrex inverter anyways. Seems like it's worth it even for $50. Unit is brand new and never used. Now that the better half knows about inverter and it's 1KW continuous power, we are thinking of bringing the good ole' rice cooker. Runs at 505W. So, the inverter should provide plenty of power.
Thanks for the inputs!
I installed a similar Costco Xantrax 1000w inverter in my truck about a month ago. I'm not sure of the model. It had been sitting in my garage about forever waiting to be installed. When I first put it in, it would go immediately to fault and shut off. Then after a few days of riding around in the truck it worked fine and has worked ever since. Odd.
Anyway, don't panic if this happens to you ....

I put a similar model from costco in my Suburban about 5 years ago...it survived numerous hunting trips, a monthlong trip to Alaska, many trips around the western US...I usually ran laptop 100% of the time, w/various other stuff (crock pot, lcd tv, etc) randomly...never had any issues with it, except when the battery ran down and it set off the alarm...when that happened, it would have to be cycled a bunch to get it to turn back on once the battery was charged...otherwise it worked flawlessly - best $80 (at the time) I ever spent...

I bet that's what was happening with mine. Once it went into alarm, it took a few times to get it to reset.

I used the inverter this pass weekend to power our rice cooker and coffee pot on our camping trip to Calaveras Big Trees State Park. It worked flawlessly. Now I need to figure out a place to hard mount it.
Thanks!

You bring a rice cooker?!?:Wow1:
I just precook it then reheat as needed on the trail. For trips up to a week for 2 I always figured it would save more space than the rice, water and cooker.
Back OT, I checked for that inverter but Costco no longer has them. Closest they have is $70 for a 750W or $300+ for a 3k watt units. Oh well. I'll stay on the lookout for one.

I normally don't but, wanted to test out the inverter. Plus, steamed rice is better when it's fresh and eating tri-tip and rib-eye for dinner.

I went with the xantrex 1200 plus so I could use the remote switch.

Nice!
Where have others mounted their inverters? Do these inverters need to be mounted in the cab or are these durable enough to mount under the hood?

Heat is a big issue so under hood mounting is out.

That was one of my other concerns. I'll look for a place inside the cab.

Normally I'm one to go "we don't need no stinking manuals" but with an appliance thats rated at 120 amps max it pays to be safe. Notice they recommend 2 guage wire at no more that 5' length. Notice the huge fuse I have in my pic (purchased at westmarine). They recommend a 150 amp fuse.
While these units are manufactured in China Xantrex is a Canadian company and has excellent manuals.

By locating mine near the camper battery I was able to use automotive battery wires instead of having to make custom cables. I also used heavy shrink tubing near the terminals just to be extra safe.

On my 1kW inverter I used 2 GA welding cable and mounted the inverter behind the back seat of my suburban (total length was maybe 10-15')...i had 150A fuse...ran it at full 1kW for awhile and checked the cables...minimal heat, so left it that way for a bunch of years.
The advantage of using welding cable is it water/gas/oil resistant, so I was able to run it along the frame rails w/o worrying about it decaying over time. Was like $30 for 25' of both red & black

Bump.
I got the 1000w Xantrex inverter for $10 at the Costco in Las Vegas. I have been pissed at myself for not buying the whole pallet up. :(
Anyway I want to mount it in the rear cargo area of my Grand Cherokee. The manual concerned me when it said to not run it longer than 5' from the battery. What gauge cable do you suggest and what is a good way to run the cable from the battery to the inverter in the back? Should it be ran along the frame rails and then up through the floor to where it is mounted or through the cab?
Thanks!
