Tall & narrow tire

I've seen on these forums that the "tall & narrow" tire is a popular choice for expedition vehicles. I noticed the other day that my grandfather has some that fit the description:
Goodyear 34"x4" on a 26" rim!!!

His other vehicles have some rather tall & narrow tires as well. 1929(?) Ford Model-A and a 1911(?) EMF:

The EMF & Jackson have to be manually cranked in the front to start up the engine, and both are right-hand drive. Kind of a step up from a horse-drawn buggy. Definitely fun to ride around town & get some stares from other motorists!! Probably won't see any of these out in the backcountry, but maybe a few of these would have made some good turn-of-the-century expedition vehicles ;)

I did a few Google searches, and that seemed to be the most comprehensive list. :hehe: But I'll have to add Ramp Travel Index to my list of TLA's (Three Letter Acronyms).

I highly doubt my grandfather has tested the Ramp Travel Index on these rigs. I'm pretty sure they're only 2WD. Here's a shot of the front suspension:

I'm not sure what you call that double leaf-spring configuration. It must replace the need for shocks. Automobiles sure have changed a lot since the early 1900's!!

That is a buggy spring system. Guys, about ten years ago, used to run the Rubicon on systems like that. It forces the tire downward and provides additional articulation. Due to upper leaf spring being able to flex.
