Just sharing a link because I've always liked the 4x4 Santana. There was one for sale here in town a few years ago for $4500. Should have jumped on it, don't know what I was thinking -

I've always seen the little 2wd toyota motorhomes running around and pondered what it would take to put it on a 4wd chassis. Had no idea they built a 4wd one.

I've fawned over that one as well Dave....

I watched someone give it away on eBay last year (http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3349)

If I recall it was sold near the greater FtCollinsDenverCoSpringsPueblo metro area. It was on Denver's craigslist for $7500 but it sold on eBay for only around $4500! :Wow1:

So do you know the current or previous owner? Any word on its whereabouts now?

I think a 4x4 Santana or 4x4 Chinook, after swapping out the old 22R or 22RE for a fresh 3.4 or the new 4.0, with a set of locked LC80 axles under it would make for a hella fun outfit!

It's a shame there aren't more manufacturers doing fun conversions like the Chinook,

or when Chevy offered the Blazer Chalet - (http://www.blazerchalet.com/)
http://www.blazerchalet.com/venezuelan77b.jpg

I know it wasn't a profitable venture for them in the late 70's but gas prices were crippling then. It seems there has been a real surge in popularity over the last few years among outdoor enthusiasts and the vehicles they are picking for their adventures. Consider the Sportsmobile, the Earthroamer, heck look no further than the oddbal Dodge Sprinter conversions to see there is some market for unique vehicles prepped for outdoor living.

I also really liked the look and idea of the Blazer Sports Chalet, although I don't think they were ever produced. They were even touted for use in Baja 35 years ago! It helps that it is mounted on my favorite generation Chevy Blazer -

There are tons of Trailmaster and Apollo Toyota 4x4 motorhome rentals in Australia. I had a close look at the Apollo..very crude camper, but the shell would be a good basis for a customized expedition rig. I am sure that used rigs could be bought cheap from one of the rental companies.

Right, but wasn't the Sunrader offered as a 4x4 in '84 and/or'85...? Or with a Quigley/Pathfinder type conversion from the factory...?

I still think finding one, converted already or not, with new axles under it and a fresh squirrel under the hood, would be a unique and fun way to travel. :jumping:

SWR - I've never seen or heard of a slide-in camper on a 1st gen 4Runner and I spend a lot of time online looking at Yotas and campers. I feel pretty sure if there were something available or a custom unit that someone had done, I would have at least seen it or a pic by now.

However that doesn't mean that this isn't an opportunity to be the first of your kind. The Eagle or Ranger model Four Wheel Camper would fit your 4Runner following the removal of the back seat and rollbar. The bed dimensions of the 1st gen 4Runners are the same from the B pillar back, as the 2nd gen ('84-'89) pick up trucks.

Here is a Ranger model on a 1st gen pick up, from the FWC website -
http://www.fourwheelcampers.com/photogallery/toyota2.jpg

There is a small gap (3-4 inches) between the back of the cab and the front of the camper, so the main problem I foresee (and probably why it hasn't been done) is that the back of your entire cab would be open to the elements, curious hands, bugs, etc. Not sure how that would be overcome without modding the 'Runner to the point that it would be more pick up than 4Runner....?

Of course you would lose your rear speakers and storage too. IIRC, the factory jack is stored in the rear in a side cubby? I had an '89 4Runner (nearly identical to the SWR, but not as nice looking) with the 3.slo also and that would be my other concern, especially after your nightmare with Monsiuer Sucky. The suspension could be modified to handle the load but it is a big drain on the powertrain, especially in the higher altitudes and mountain passes that you seem to enjoy.

Not saying it can't be done but I am saying I haven't seen a first gen 4Runner with a camper on it and I'm not aware of anything that was ever offered from a conversion company.

Thanks for the kind words on my outfit. It's been a fun process (and frustrating) to put together something different, that will work well on the trail and last me a looooong time. The FWC has really enhanced my outdoor experiences and hasn't been a liability to where I can take the truck. That's often the tough part, finding a camping solution that will augment what you have and not restrict you from your favorite trails.

And I don't sweat the haters. I seem to make friends with Kalifornians quite easily.....:ylsmoke:

If one wants to get terribly technical about it, the Chinook part of the shell for the Blazer Chalet (aka Casa Grande for the GMC version), isn't a "slide-in". Over on the blazerchalet.com web site, it's described as a real chore to remove & replace since it was engineered to be a permanent bolt-on installation.

I'm sad about that myself, but hoping some of my other fellow Chalet owners will figure out a way to make them work as a slide-in. I'd like to use my Blazer part as a "large object hauler", at least to get a little more practical use out of it.

Chalet shells can be found on eBay every once in a while, along with rusted out 'complete units', where the camper part is the only salvageable part remaining. It would be entertaining if someone could creatively install a Chalet camper on some other vehicle.

I dunno much more about it, since I didn't take the photos originally and don't know much about the camper. I think (I have to emphasize /think/) it was made by a company called Bonanza and it was called the Traveler. That might also be the name of the company, Bonanza Traveler. Anyway, if that's the case I think they went under in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

That was a heady time for OHV campers, WilderNest was kickin', these guys, Toyota was making rugged, simple, decently priced trucks. There was even Toyota 2L diesels around for a few years in the mid-1980s... Now what do we get? Pickups with carpet, power windows, lots of plastic and $30K+ pricetags. Blah.

Scott,

Thanks for pointing us to the full set of photos

So what happened to the Tinders Toyota/Bonanza
vehicle? How long ago was it listed for sale?

While I'm not crazy about the idea of fiberglassing
the camper cab-over to the roof of the cab, the
overall construction seems OK. I'm also a little
concerned about the weight of the fiberglass
camper compared to the 4 wheel camper sort of
aluminum camper.

I'm pretty sure Bonanza Campers or whatever, is/was in Indiana.

edit*
Checked my own link, yup, Indiana -

From Brian894x4.com (http://brian894x4.com/Picturesother4X4s.html)-

"It was modified with a camper added by Bonaza Coach, out of Indiana. The roof tilts up for a full height ceiling and it sleeps 4 adults. Ken rebuilt the interior to his liking. He currently uses it for surfing down in Cape Hatteras North Carolina. A very and nicely built Toyota 4x4 camper."

kcowyo
12-21-2006, 08:29 PM
Just a clarification -

The company's proper name is Bonanza Coach Corp, with a second "N" in Bonanza. It was misspelled on Brian's site.

Their contact info - Bonanza Coach Corp. 26328 Parkview Ave., Elkhart, IN 46514, (219) 266-8075

However it seems they went out of business in '97 or '98. The last sighting of that camper was on Denver's Craigslist and eBay in the Fall of 2005. It sold on eBay for a little over $4500, but to who & where, I don't know.

Yeah, Don't get me started on that... Back in 1985 my Toyota 4x4 with a 5 speed and the 22r (carbureted) engine could routinely turn over 25 mpg in the city and nearly 30 on the highway, all without compromising off-road ability.

Then the 90's came along and gas was cheap, so buyers kept saying "more power, faster, more doodads and toys!" and so we got the Tacoma, which is bigger, heavier, and thirstier.

My personal pet peeve is the demise of the panel truck, which, in its 4x4 configuration, made a perfect off-road camper. Of course, panel trucks were replaced by vans in the 1960's, because vans had a more "efficient" design (i.e. they could haul as much stuff but took less room to park.) Unfortunately, this also increased their size vertically, which made them much less viable as off-road platforms (which explains why no manufacturer ever offered a 4x4 full-sized van from the factory - all 4x4 vans are aftermarket conversions.)

Imagine what you could do with a Tacoma (or any other small truck) - based panel truck with a fabric pop-top. You could even put removable passenger seats in the back so you could carry more than 1 other person while driving and still not compromise the camping ability of the vehicle.

Below: Great example of what I'm talking about (shamelessly stolen off of Collector Car Trader Online (http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com))

Hi!

I had one of those Toyota Dolphin camper a couple years ago...1988 2WD.
We bought it for a 2 weeks trip in the desert at Burning Man.

They are simple and reliable, but the camper portion was not meant to go offroad.

We drove it for about 200 miles in Nevada on a dirt road after the celebration was over...

We almost destroyed the interior. The stove felt on the floor...the cabinets were all over the place.

And I put a thick layer of dust everywhere...it took me a week to fix up everything. The frame of this camper is all wood. I don't think I would want to convert these. I think fiberglass is a better option, like the Chinook.

You bring up a good point. But even with fiberglass, on the one with the walk-in camper, you have to wonder what is going to happen to the junction between the cab and the camper when the body starts flexing on rough roads.

To me, just another reason why I'd prefer a single-bodied steel vehicle like the Toyota Troop Carrier or like my panel truck above.

This vehicle is used by Roadtrek, Sportsmobile and others for
Class-B conversions.

Chevy also offered AWD for years in the mid-size Astro van.
The Tiger pop-up camper on an AWD Astro van worked well.

I have no connection to the sale, so don't blame me if it's a piece of junk ;)

Oh, and wrt the Yotas. I had an '85 4Runner. Great truck, but the 22re was pretty gutless in the mountains of Colorado. I couldn't imagine putting the extra weight of a camper on it. I'm really amazed that some companies build 25'+ motorhomes with that engine. However, the factory fiberglass top wasn't exactly a lightweight, so if you used lightweight camper construction, mayne it wouldn't suck too much worse...

I recenltly pinged a guy who told me he lived in a Yota-based motorhome for a year in Colorado. He said he nearly froze, couldn't get in a hurry going anywhere, and the interior was cheaply built. However, he also said (as implied above) the fiberglas shell held up well...

Thanks for the link! Not featured on the website, but I've always thought Ken Trinder's '87 with a Bonanza camper was pretty cool, too.

I almost bought this camper on ebay about 4 years ago when it was for sale in Colorado. I had last minute second thoughts and it went for much less than I would have bid. I believe the selling price was approx $4300. Looking back I am still kicking myself, since the camper conversion is sort of rare.

Same thing, a current eBay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-Chinook-Camper_W0QQitemZ220382709941QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRVs _Campers?hash=item220382709941&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318), but mislabeled as a Chinook.

The eBay auction for the Toyota/Bonanza camper closes on Weds (Apr-01-09 15:59:54 Pacific time zone). The Buy-It-Now price is $1799. The current high bid is $1,025, which does not meet the reserve price.

This is obviously an enormous renovation project, but the Toyota/Bonanza camper is very cool indeed.

Edit: sold for $1495

I like that. A lot, and I normally don't like dual rear wheel vehicles. The 2.8 diesel with low miles should last forever.

That would be a great rig for a single full-timer on the road. I like the full size door on the side. Wonder what's across the back of the floorplan...

Good find, good posting -

That Toyota Galaxy looks like a really neat rig! I wonder what the bulges at the bottom of the doors are.... just splash shields for the front corners of the coach, or something functional?

One nitpick.... it appears that the rear axle is the failure-prone (when overloaded) semi-floating five lug unit with dualie adapters, rather than the more suitable 1-ton 6 lug full-floater with 'real' duals. It probably wouldn't be too hard to remedy, tho' I've read that the new good units are no longer available.

The Huntsman based on the 3L diesel Toyota Hilux, 4x4, only in Austraila as far as I can tell. 4x2 options too. Great floorplan, looks comfy.

My old iMac can't handle YouTube videos worth beans any more, but thought I'd post this one I just ran across, a slideshow video of how an old Chinook is plopped onto a newer 4x4 Toyota. Link here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPkC5G55MbA and screencapture below from around the midpoint of the video, it gets painted rather nicely toward the end.
