I'm more than happy to volunteer to lead a group for a weekend.

As of today, my first open weekend is 8/25, then 9/8, 9/30, 10/7, 10/28.

What time frame were you looking at?

Oh yea, I should also add that this trip could be a perfect excuse for anyone who is planning on getting a VHF 2-meter radio to get on the ball and get a license and get one installed. Al uses one and it is definitely the preferred method of comm's when on a trip with him.

[Technical disclaimer: An FCC technician's license is not valid for VHF 2M use in Mexico and a mexican permit is required... technically speaking. :orngartis ]

Thanks for the big build-up Chris. Hope I can live up to it.

What kind of trip should we put together? Driving dirt, finding a good beach/ocean front camp, historical, mounitains?

I would assume camping for both nights & cross back in Tecate.

Maybe we can get some more interest by starting with a date say 9/8.

I will have 7 days to play. However I am a player and open for part-time or full-time fun.:)

I'm interested..............

But I have two issues.

I need a truck that works!.......UG!

And I'm hoping to do Colorado August/Sept.

I'm just 40 miles from the border.....north county san diego......so no problem if the stars align!!!!!!!!!

I've been promised my truck working so many times.........and so many times it's just not working right.......that I should almost never look at this site again until my truck is working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only get intermitent periods of bliss with my truck.....unaware of the underlaying problems until later!

Great idea. I'll be the first to admit that I don't have a clue about what is necessary for a trip there -- even the most basic and obvious requirements would probably never cross my mind.

I might be up for a short weekend. This is the weekend AFTER labor day right?

Also, like others have said, get a 2m! Because, just like Al says, "CB radio sucks!"

:victory:

Al...very nice of you to volunteer. Hard to believe your free weekends don't start until then. Or do you have "secret" trips planned?
:p

awalter
07-13-2006, 03:40 PM
For starters, your going to need about the same supplies & equipment that you would need spending a weekend in the desert & being self contained. Food, water, refreshments, camping gear.

Probably not necessary, but I always carry an extra 5 gallons of gas, you never know.

At a minimum you should have a working CB. I prefer 2-meter, but I realize not everybody will have one.

Mexican insurance is a must. It is available on the internet or at kiosks near the border. I prefer to carry pesos, but dollars are excepted everywhere. It is usually easier making sure your change is correct, if you don't have to calculate the exchange rate. Cambio's (money exchange houses) are available near the border.

Legally, Tourist Cards will be required. Do most folks going down to where we will be going have them, probably not. I can give more info on this later.

I would recommend crossing the border on Friday between the hours of 10 AM to 2 PM. We will need 3-4 hrs to get to a descent camp spot, & we will want to miss rush hour traffic.

More to come

You are correct, after Labor Day, time to take a weekend off.

Robb, I've finally decided I had to catch up with house & yard work. Have been busy with that since Memorial Day weekend. The only thing I've done since El Golfo is a half day trip down to the Otay Mountains. Have family coming out the end of this month & then I plan on being gone an average of 3 out of 4 weekends.

Do have a couple of side trips already planned for July & August as you have guessed.

Mr. "SWR" ......"this is Mr. Sucky's pretend engine rebuild shop...........your 4Runner is ready, you can pick it up now!"

Does this mean that the stars have aligned and the SWR is all fixed once and for all after my 9 month engine rebuild ORDEAL?........!!!!!!!!!!

The last thing to do is recharge the R~12 Freon.....because Mr. Sucky....Sucked it all out!!!!!.....UG! (R~12 = $60 bucks per pound!)

So I would love to fit Baja in there somewhere before or after Colorado.

I'm also hoping to do Monache Meadows and some other goodies.... sometime before the snow starts falling again.

I just now drove home and tucked the SWR in his spot in the garage!......:jumping:

On the 40 miles trip home.....she ran great!

.....oh wait!.....is it a he or a she?!! maybe we can decide that in Baja.....

They found out that on the last Feb. to April rebuild..........the cams were cut wrong not allowing the valves to open properly and this was the Terrible low power issue.

They claim they fixed all oil leaks.

I EVEN got a NEW Power Steering Pump complete for free........because they Smashed mine!.......LOL

I think if I keep taking my truck back there......pretty soon I will have a free ground up restoration....:shakin: ........not that it needs one anytime soon!

So I really want to do this trip.

Legally speaking, a Mexican Tourist Card is required for each person on this trip. In order to obtain a tourist card you must have either a passport or your original birth cirtificate. The reason a tourist card is required is because we will be going south of Ensenada about 60-70 miles. What is the chance that you will be asked to show the tourist card? Probably .5-.05%. If you are staying 7 days or less in Mexico, there is no charge for the tourist card. I usually get a tourist card that is valid for 180 days, & costs around $20. They are available at the consulate in San Diego or at the Immigration Office at the border crossing.

A vehicle permit is not required in Baja.

Mexican Insurance is required.

But, this is a Democratic process and I await your votes...

Option 2.
We would hit the coast Friday & Camp. Saturday do some dirt & work our way up to the Sierra Juarez & make camp Saturday at Laguna Hanson, then head out for Tecate on Sunday for the crossing.
Cast your votes now! :victory:

I vote for option 2, as i would rather not leave my gear unattended while we explore.

Also, there is no way in Heck i will be crossing the border in Tecate again! I will be crossing back over in Otay.

Where do we plan to meet friday AM?

awalter
07-20-2006, 03:31 PM
Let me confuse the issue on the voting.
With Option 1, we will relocate our camp for Saturday night.
Option 1 we will stay on the coast.
Option 2 will put us in the mountains for Saturday night.

OK, here we go with the peoples choice of Option 2.

Friday 9/8/06 - Meet at 11 AM Longs Drugs parking lot 444 E. San Ysidro Blvd. San Diego, CA for a short drivers meeting. Insurance & money exchange available if not already handled.

Departure at 11:30 AM for border crossing.

Follow Mex 1 south for approximately 95 miles to Ejido Ajusco & head west. There will be 3 tolls to pay @ under $3.00 each.

Follow graded dirt road west for approximately 15 miles to Los Alisitos & turn south.

Follow dirt road south for approximately 18 miles via Rancho Viejo, La Bocana de Viejo, Punta San Jose(noted surf spot), Las Chivas to Punta Cabras & camp.

Saturday 9/9/06 - Depart 9 AM or so & head out north via Las Codornices & Nativo del Valle to Santo Tomas & pavement at Mex 1, approximately 15 miles.

Head north on Mex 1 for aprroximately 30 miles to Ensenada & turn right on Mex 3. Head east on Mex 3 for approximately 26 miles to Ojos Negros & head north.

Heading east & then north on dirt via El Coyote, La Huerta, La Rosa de Castilla, San Pedro, Agua de la Piedra & Laguna Juarez(Laguna Hanson) & camp, approximately 40 miles. Possible fee area.

Sunday 9/10/06 - Depart 9-10 AM & head north for pavemant at La Romorosa approximately 40 miles.

Head west for Tecate & the border crossing approximately 40 miles. There is a toll road available to use if pressed for time.

One can expect anywhere from a 1-3 hour wait to cross the border on a Sunday. It doesn't really matter which one you use, San Ysidro, Otay, Tecate or Mexicali, they all suck.

Head north on Rte 188 to SR94 & west for San Diego. I usually stop at the Barrett Junction Cafe for their "Fish Fry" on my way back to San Diego. It is outstanding.

Hit me with any questions.

I am not sure where to get the cards before crossing the border. I usually get mine right at the border on the Mexican side. There is a place where you can get it. Take the right (red, something to declare) lane. At least that's where I got the last one 2 years ago. The last few trips where too short or not far enough south to require one.

Requirements out side normal Expedition Gear:

Legally speaking, a Mexican Tourist Card is required for each person on this trip. In order to obtain a tourist card you must have either a passport or your original birth certificate.

Please correct me if any the above has changed. (I am confused on the meeting time!) I keep seeing different times.

I do not think Al requires them, however sometimes they set check points in Mexico and maybe they will ask for them, maybe!

I do not require a tourist card. I am only posting what is legally required.

You can get a tourist card at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego & are "not" required to stop at Mexican Immigration at the border to get it stamped.

Any problems that may arise by not having the proper documents, you are on your own.

No sweat, i found their address and have the day off so i will be going down there later on to get one.

One question, if at last minute i talked a friend/passenger into coming with me, would he/she need one too or is just for the drivers?

Thanks

Everyone needs their own tourist card. We may have to stop & pick them up on Friday, but the fewer the better RE: time.

Well, I just got back from the Consulate in San Diego and it was a fairly simple process.

A little tip to anyone going to the SD office to get your tourist visa:

I was standing in line with about 50+ Mexicans with lots of forms in their hands, thinking, wow this is going to take a good portion of my day waiting for all of this. :(

There are no signs or labels on where to go. The window for the tourist visa is UPSTAIRS at window # 1, not downstairs where the massive herd of people are! Once i figured that out, i was in and out in under 10 mins!

Ready to go! :sombrero:

never been down to mexico. should i have some mexican money as well as american money? if so does the border area have the best exchange rate?

Personal Preference.

Me, Personally, i will head down with US dollars in increments of $10-20. Not much is ever more then $10-20! Peso Exchange is about 10:1. Some people prefer pesos because its easier to keep track of your change in case someone is trying to rip you off. I just use the 10:1 rule and havent had any problems. Actually, not true, i have had one guy trip to rip me off once at a Pemex, I gave him a very dirty look and shook my head no and he immediately gave me all of my change!

Also, if you get $100 worth of Pesos and you only spend $50 then you need to stop at the border again to convert them back to US dollars because the only places i have found on the US that takes Pesos is those lunch trucks that come to jobsites (honestlY).

I dont want to deal with that waiting in line and exchanging $ and stuff but i am kinda lazy like that.

But that is just me! Some people go down with all Pesos. Its your call!

Carrier Bearing? As in diff carrier bearing? That is fairly labor intensive. If its in your 02 DC i would have the great folks at Toyota Warranty it. No way on earth you should need to replace a carrier bearing on an 02! I would do more testing/diaganostics before opening up the diff!

Good, hopefully everyone is considerate enough to do this beforehand so we arent waiting at the border all day! :D

Also, REMEMBER TO GO UPSTAIRS TO WINDOW #1 you do NOT have to wait in the HUGE line outside!

We will still have to stop in Mexico to hand over one of the copies and I think get another stamp. Just learned this last weekend while down there. Accordin g to Al the best place to do this is in Ensenada.

For communications I use CB channel 1 & 2-meter frequency 146.535.

The tourist cards still need to be stamped by Mexican Immigration when entering Mexico.

Cool! Was there a huge line on the street?

As for Mex Insurance, if you have AAA that is where i get mine and have had great like with it! When i busted a wheel hub at the 500 in june AAA was ready to send a flatbed to Ensenada to get me (at no cost and was covered under my policy) so from then on, i am sold on AAA for mex insurance!

You just go in to AAA and ask for it? How are the prices?

YUP! :D

How are the prices?

Comprable to others, maybe a tad higher, but the piece of mind is worth every penny to me. They even give you a big packet with all emergency #'s, what to do in certain scenarios, etc..... I THINK my past policy for 4 days was $66 or something like that. I insure my truck for $20k though! :D

I was blown away by the fact that when we called the 800# on the policy that they were ready to dispatch a flatbed from SD to Ensenada to get us at no cost (other then the policy). All the asked for was the nearest Kilo marker and whether we were on the southbound or northbound lane. We ended up welding it all together, but their response to our situation was most impressive. I have been a AAA member for 9 years and now will be one for life! :D Not sure if the other carriers would be so helpful!

ONE NOTE: YOU MUST CARRY YOUR POLICY ON YOUR PERSON AND NOT LEAVE IT IN YOUR CAR, IF YOUR CAR OR POLICY IS STOLEN, ITS GONE!!!!

Your experience with a claim is good to know. I've always used AAA, but for this past weekend I went through Bajabound since AAA got more expensive. After your experience I might do AAA again. BTW, you can do there insurance online also, no need to go down to the office.

Considering i needed to show my passport, i would imagine both of you must be present, not 100% but that is my guess! Give em a ring!

Regarding the Mexican Consulate, in San Diego as long as the paperwork (passport or birth certificate) is in order, you do not have to be present. I've had a friend pick up the tourist cards for 4-5 people.

:( This little guy is not doing it justice. I need a big crying icon.

We can't make it. Sorry guys, I was looking forward to meeting new people and traveling again with friends I hadn't seen in a while.

Srisuda had been caughing, it didn't get better, she finally saw the doc and the verdict is bronchitis. She is on antibiotics and got an inhaler. This stuff needs plenty of rest also to heal, so we'll have to take it easy this weekend.

The rest will be good for me too. I am still recovering from a 2 day stomach flu earlier in the week. I need to get fit quick, because next week im registered for the Heartbreak Ridge Half Marathon in Camp Pendelton. Hope I get full strength back and catch nothing else. Never ran that distance and didn't get as much training in as I wanted, so 05TACODOC are you working next weekend, may need your services at the race :o

We are completely bumped out right now!!!!

As you all know by now, i did not make it to our plan trip due to my fathers surgery not going as plan, however he is now much better and should go to a slow healthy recovery, I did however take a trip down to San Felipe- Puertecitos- El Huerfanito area on Sunday 09/03/06. Here are some of the pictures that i took and I hope this pictures help some of the people in here take a trip to a wonderfull area by the Sea of Cortez.

Thank you for all your prayers...
