View Full Version : Family Expedition Trailer Ideas
Looking for help on what to buy/build next year. I began building/restoring a nice M101 CDN2. We used it for camping & back country exploring a number of times this year. However, due to the size of my family, we were camping in a traditional tent on the ground. My wife and kids decided that wasn't going to work anymore! I sold the M101 and am searching for ideas for next year. The family really wants a pop-up, but I'm not so sure. The problem is there are 5 of us plus a 60 pound English bull dog that need to sleep! Most of the pop-ups are pretty large for pulling into the back country. I've been looking at RTT options, but can't find one that will hold five "adults." Has anyone mounted 2 RTT's on top of an AT trailer? Are any of the add on rooms for the RTT's or Kamparoo usable for sleeping, IE and they fully enclosed or just walls with gaps here and there? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get creative. I may have to bite the bullet and find an old smaller pop-up and modify it for my needs...

I would be hesitant to mount 2-RTT's atop a trailer even if you could. You'll be adding ~300lbs...to the highest point.
I don't know how old/big your kids are but you might consider the Kamparoo that is for sale if you need to buy something soon...Queen size bed could be used for Mom & Dad and a small child and then put 2 or possibly 3-small kids on the enclosed floor. Or if you are camping in one spot for more than a night you could zip on the extra room enclosure for more space.
Or wait until AT gets their hybrid/clamshell/Ateroo done :) .

Someone posted a link to these trailers a lil while ago. I love the layouts for the tents. It works great for us family guys, lol. I would like to see something like this offered by AT ( buy american :) ) So the shipping mite be painful to order one of these, but the idea is there.

If you want a pop up to fit the buill check out Fleetwood, there Evolution Series is nice for mild wheelin and they are reasonably priced. a loaded out one is just about $14k.

pint,
Another possible option for you to consider: Install the Ezi-Awn awning on your 100 with the optional wall kit (in addition to maybe the Ezi-Awn 1600/1800 or other RTT). You could use a HD tarp for the floor area and either sleeping pads or cots for the kids.
Just another option/thought.

You could look at either the Base Camp or Compact Conquerors.

For the money, ... right now, ... there isn't anything else offering the options for the money.
If you go through the thread, you will see some pics of my family using the trailer.
Hope this helps.

Spresso, I thought about mounting an RTT to the truck and another to the trailer. That would work, but it's nice to be all together. My kids are 9, 13 & 14. The older 2 are adult sized, and the 9 year old is already 5' tall! Damn kids!

Fernando from Camping Labs is importing some MyWayTents from South Africa. He will have some trailer tents. To look at the Trailer tent go to http://www.mywaytents.co.za/.
You could mount one of these on a Chaser trailer.

Buyer beware. Although this trailer has a Michigan title it may not have been legally imported and have the required DOT and NHTSA clearances.
The VIN plate should state clearly that the trailer complies with all DOT and NHTSA regulation, it should also have a DOT approved tire label.
To my knowledge Track Shack is not exporting to the USA through a Registered Agent although this trailer may have been personally imported. If it was personally imported the trailer would have had to be brought into compliance by a Registered Importer.
Google Importing a Vehicle into the USA to get all the info.

That is awesome!!! Is the tent their own, or another brand?

Do you have any options on your trailers to "house" more people? I'm not apposed to an RTT with one or two attached rooms, but they need to be fully enclosed.

The Tent is a heavy duty military grade canvas made in the same factory as Howling Moon (I'm told). It is almost identical to the Howlings I have seen.
Visit the site: http://www.conquerorcampers.com/
Under the picture on the home page are the words Compact and Base Camp. If you click on those, it will take you into each of the different models.
If you decide to contact the distributor, contact Dean (he is the owner of this outfit as well as owns Saturn of Atlanta- 404-316-9840. Tell him I sent you from the Expedition Portal. He will take care of you.
Hope that helps.

The MyWayTent offers an enclosed room, and Eezi Awn is bringing in some trailer tents. Our new composite trailer will also offer options to house a family.

That would be a question Paul May of Equipt1.com would have to answer.
