I was just playing around on the FJ Cruiser page and ran the numbers.
You can get a manual V6 4wd FJCruiser for 22k MSRP. Give it a few months and you can get it for even less with dealer discounts. That is one hell of a bargain IMO. With AC and a radio too.

I was talking to the Toyota guy at the trail run last weekend....The one that i drove was $28,000 bills for the auto. The stick seems more inviting for the $$$$$$. Going to have to get the wife one!!!

Hell I would only get it in a stick anyway.
Mine comes up at $24,922 Option are passenger arm rest, interior lights, back up camera, and hitch. Although since the factory bumper would be gone soon after I got it I would probably for go the hitch and build a bumper with one built into it like the one on my taco. so that would be $400 less.
What is lame is that in order to get the Atrac upgrade wich has a few niceties in it you have to first spring 1800 for the convenience group so it's really 4K for the Atrac. All I want out if that is Tilt and Cruise. From what I understand the Atrac stuff is included and wired on all FJ trucks. All you really have to do is buy the switch for it and wire it up.
Oh and silver would be my color choice.

Not to be argumentative (and I know you're out on an adventure this weekend) but from what I'm hearing and seeing, albeit in a much smaller market, is that you can build one on Toyota's site for $22K, but good luck getting it from the dealer for that figure.
Just what I've been hearing from some folks in my neck of the woods.

You are completely correct sir... initially you were lucky if you were paying about $5000 above MSRP at the dealership. Now, the demand and novelty is going away so the prices are coming down. Although, I still don't think they are MSRP.

I was looking to buy one 2 months ago. They were asking $10K over MSRP. This month there are many asking MSRP in Phoenix. They are coming down as the months go by.
so if you build/buy one online via Toyota.com the dealer is still able to charge you more ?

Been serious talk in all of the mags that a convertible is in the works! Betcha all the folks that jumped on these right away will be a tad miffed when a convertible comes out in a year or 2! :ylsmoke:

My first encounter I am actually a little disappointed in them after sitting in a couple.
Monstrous blind spots and you sit low in it so visibility is not great for trail riding. The visibility out of my 1st gen 4Runner is one of the things I really love about it. I felt like I was back in my fullsize K5 when I sat in the FJ the first time.
I also thought I read the Manual was only available in full time 4wd.
If thats true That sucks for MPG having to spin all the drivetrain all the time. A part time with locking hubs at the wheels would be my preference. If you frag a CV you can run 2wd and unlock the hubs effectively bypassing anything drivtrain related in the front that may break. In a full time you are screwed. You will have to take parts off and still might have issues because I don't know if you can lock the center diff and run on the hwy that way.
One of my contractors has one. Need to take it for a ride one day and really see if my first impressions are warranted.
I also understand no E-Locker. I guess you can add it without much more hassle then the E-locker I am about to put in my 4Runner but it would be nice to have it as a factory offering.
Overall my feeling is Toyota asked us what we wanted. The exterior design team sot of got it right till they got to seating hight and visibility. The drivtrain team TOTALLY missed the mark. Those of us that actually wheel want locking hubs, part time cases and selectable lockers.....Hell I don't want ABS and thats forced on you.
If I could have it any way I wanted.
NO AIR BAGS.
NO ABS
NO TRACTION CONTROL
Locking hubs (no central disconnect, honest to god get out of the truck to lock in hubs)
Part time gear drive case with a 4:1 low range
6 speed with a 6:1 granny and a .75 over
4:88's (can you say 117:1 crawl ratio?)
Full floating rear axle like a FJ80
Selectable lockers front and rear.
The Rear camera is nice, how about some extra ports so you could add a camera or 4?
1500 watt inverter and a on board welder option with dual batteries and 150 amp alternator.
on board air
33's
Offer a winch bumper with a Warn HS9500i
A/C, power windows and locks.
interior night light (red like aircraft so as not to kill night vision)
GPS antenna on the roof or built in GPS that has update maps and will handle topo maps.
Snorkel and water proofing option (raised breathers pulling air from the air box, water proof ig, sealed and vented alternator, Water proof ECM and electronics.)
I figure loosing the "I cant drive and handle putting on my seat belt" options that won't handle being dunked would about wash the rest of the parts I would want and put it at $25k.

The other night.....
After hearing that my engine still sucks and is still not working properly!!!!!!!!!!
.....I stopped in my local north county san diego Toyota dealer.
I sat in the new FJ ....it's been a few months since I took ALL those pics (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/totallytropical1/album?.dir=3409&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos).
I walked around the stealership for almost 30 min. before I was even greeted! (I was dressed in a t~shirt shorts and flip~flops!........yet I could pay CASH for whatever they had on their lot!....I learned years ago in the furniture business not to pre~judge a customer!).
I was sitting in a new black FJ when a guy came up to me and said hi. I promptly told him he was too late!....and that I had already been here 30 min. so he blew it!.............hehe .........I like to razz them!....:sombrero:
While sitting in the new FJ...........
I still had this feeling like the thing is just too HUGE! I felt like I was sitting inside a BIG EGG!....on wheels.
This guy who said hi finally told me sorry, he was short handed (two guys didn't show up...in typical so. ca. fashion!) and that he is the sales manager.
He proceeded to tell me that he knows ALL about off~roading because he has a 1979 FJ40.
Now here is my point.
He told me that the New FJ is now Toyota's MOST capable stock off~road product they have.
I asked what about the Tacoma.
He said......"oh no....the Tacoma is lighter in the back and is NOT as capable as the NEW FJ".
The way he was trying the "oversell" tactic...........I was beginning to feel like they are NOT selling as many New FJ's as they would like and that they are not as popular as we are all lead to believe.
Could this be true?
.......AND!
I would like ALL the TACOMA OWNERS to chime in and tell me why/or if it is true..... that the New FJ would be better off~road than your Tacoma.
I have never owned a Tacoma ......nor have I driven one off road.....so I really can't comment.
I just had this terrible feeling at the dealership that I was being feed a load of "****ake Mushrooms"............!.......:littlefriend:
What do you think?
OH.........!!!!!!!!!!
...and I almost forgot the most important part of what he said!
I asked him about diesel engines in future Toyota trucks!
He told me that the 2008 Tundra will have a diesel engine.
bigreen505

Grim, good list, but I would like a diesel too.
SWR, from what I remember reading on mud a while ago, the few people who had spent some time with the FJ were extremely impressed with its off road capability, and they are a hard crowd to please. As for your take on overselling, my guess is that because of the limited production of the FJ Crusier, they can still sell them at or above MSRP so there is probably far more profit margin for the dealer in them, in terms of sales price vs. invoice, kickbacks and spiffs.
Honestly I don't doubt what the salesman said, but our definition of off road travel and capability is different that most (expedition travel vs. rock crawling). If you think the Tacoma is too light in the back, just add aux. fuel, water tank, tools, spares, rack, stove, shovel, hi-lift, etc., and you will probably be sitting at about a 40/60 weight distribution.

Good points "bigreen505"..........!
......and it's not me that thinks Tacoma's are too light in the back.
They really need to be light in the back...........because they are ment to carry "Loads"........! So I agree with your points!
One thing in the sales managers favor!
He did LOVE the sound of my Very low mileage 4Runner and exclaimed how capable it is!............:sombrero::victory:

The elocker is an option for the rear of the FJ Cruiser.
Personally, i think toyota completely dropped the ball by not offering it in a convertable version! I would consider buying one in a convertable version for sure!
Also, that roof rack is almost useless, the front half of it doesnt even have a floor so whatever you are putting in the rack will scratch the roof!

And it's ok to talk to yourself too:wings:
I believe the FJ Cruiser can have both TRAC and a rear locker, making it the most capable stock Toyota 4x4 available in the US market.
The looks of the vehicle are slowly growing on me, however, I would love to have 4 real doors. I have come to the conclusion I will not be buying one of these as it would not work for a family guy like me.
I would have considered a nice new Tacoma 4 door but it wasn't in the budget.
I have no expectation of quality service when I buy a car therefore I'm never disappointed or surprised. I like the Toyota product, not the Toyota dealers. Then again, I have had bad dealer experiences all over the place with Jeep, Ford, and Mercury too.

I've gone full circle on these things...when the concept was initally revealed, I hated the look. As it got more press, it grew on me a little, at least, the front of it. But after having a chance to test drive a couple, I'm back to my original opinion. I didn't like the visibility, didn't like the back seat, don't like the roof rack, and I just can't get into the back of the truck, there's something about the giant c-pillar and the weird back that just doesn't look right.
Kudos to Toyota for taking a risk and coming out with a well-priced, capable 4-wheeler, and kudos for paying homage to the vehicle that kept them in the US market in those first shaky years.
But *personally*, the FJ Cruiser doesn't do it for me. I think a convertible would move it another step forward, but still, I just can't see myself in one of these.
For what it's worth, it seems to be selling well, the Dell parking lot is full of them, in every color, and the dealerships in this area still don't have more than one at a time, if they even have any.

Ditto what he said, kinda! I could possibly see myself in one of these if they came out with a convertable and fixed some of the funky issues with the visibility! Nice rig otherwise! :D

The $500 OFF FJ ......tells me I was right about the FJ's NOT selling like Hot Cakes!
I'm not really sure that $500 over invoice on the others is all that hot of a deal with sales being really slow right now like I'm betting they are!

Mark,
Truck and SUV sales are down across the board except for Toyota who posted a 1.5% sales gain this month over last year. I agree the demand is starting to slow down for the FJ's but each dealer only appears to have 3-4 vehicles on the lot whereas I see a fleet of 4runners and Tacomas.
I'm also seeing these all over the place, granted I do look for them, but I see several every commute.
I suspect that Toyota will easily reach the goal of 60,000 units for the first year. 60,000 units was their publicly stated goal.
BTW, $500 off the sticker could still be $5000 over MSRP, whereas $500 over invoice sounds good. I bet if you wait until next year, the FJ will be found at $500 over invoice too.

It may sounds like he's giving you a deal off the sticker, but keep in mind that he'll make more off of you if he charges you a higher interest rate - if your financing.

I just tried to build one on the Toyata site and with no options, bare bones 4x4 stick I ended up with MSRP of high $23k. I wonder if it is related to my location or something. Also, I wish there were more color choices availabe, white would be nice at least.
Has anyone outfitted one of these for expedition work yet? I'm curious to hear what the word is.

Just thought I'd add a real-world off-road observation to the mix.
I was at Flat Nasty last week and of couse, the FJ Trail Team was there.
I was quite surprised at the level of off-road capability these vehciles exhibited with just the addition of some BFGs and an ARB front bumper (and sliders, of course).
The ATRAC is really amazing. While I am spinning my locker dial, hoping the lockers lock and unlock fast enough to keep me out of trouble, the ATRAC worked in the blink of an eye every time. Not for everyone, for sure. But you cannot argue about how well it works!
Nothing like having your front end refusing to unlock while you are in a tricky off-camber turn on loose stuff!

TRICKED-OUT FJ CRUISER TO ENCOURAGE CUSTOMIZATION?
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., recently announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Special Edition package for the 2007 FJ Cruiser sport utility vehicle (SUV) and 2007 Camry Hybrid.
Toyota will showcase its TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser at the 2006 SEMA Show. The Toyota booth (32644) is located in the upper level of the South Hall.
The TRD Special Edition package adds several exterior performance enhancements to the 2007 FJ Cruiser SUV. Included in the package are TRD/Bilstein off-road tuned, red painted shock absorbers. The special shocks are designed to enhance straight line stability, decrease brake "dive" and acceleration "squat" yaw response, stability and roll feel, body motion characteristics, shock impact and off-road handling. The seamless monotube design provides superior tube strength while maximizing heat dissipation and shock life.
Additionally, TRD has synchronized the locking differential with Active Traction control. The locking rear differential no longer overrides Active Traction control enabling the FJ Cruiser to navigate easier through boulders.
Unique exterior enhancements include an all black paint scheme with a black roof and "TRD Special Edition" badges. The Special Edition package will also feature a set of five TRD 16-inch alloy wheels with a gun metal gray painted finish and BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires with wheel locks, TRD performance exhaust and rock rails.
Inside, the Special Edition package is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags, and a multi-informational display which includes compass, inclinometer and temperature gauge. The Special Edition package also includes a two-in-one AM/FM audio and six-disc CD changer, quickshifter (manual transmission models only) and all-weather front and rear cargo floor mats with a TRD logo.
Only 3,200 units of the TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser will be built. The Special Edition package will carry a base MSRP of $7,265 on manual transmission models and $7,250 for models with an automatic transmission. The base MSRP for the FJ Cruiser four-wheel drive models start at $23,090 for the manual transmission and $23,500 for an automatic transmission. The TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser will arrive at Toyota dealerships in early November.
