I have been lurking for a while now and thought it was time to introduce myself.
This is my rig, loaded with gear for 11 days of fun in the San Juans.

The truck is basically stock for now. I have big plans for it starting in the new year..

Welcome aboard, Daniel.
It seems that we full-size guys tend to keep a lower profile. Your pictures demonstrate why: Load enough gear for a week and half long trip and the truck still looks the same. Rest assured, we are here, and out on the trails as well. As you have already discovered, ExPo is an excellent group of people with much to share.
Maybe we Dodge, Ford, and GM big pickup folk ought to come up with a secret handshake so we can recognize one another :-)

Wecome to the Expo Daniel!
I personally think a truck, especially a quad or crew cab, is one of the best all around "Expo" rigs around. Plenty of room for gear, room for the family, and when you get home you can haul firewood or gravel and make your rig work for its keep. When we headed down to the Mon08 trip a couple of weeks ago, not only did we have a weeks worth of gear in the back of the truck, but we had two extra kids for a total of six people on a 6 hour drive. All were comfy and had a great trip down. Here's a shot of my '01 Ram on the forest roads of WV.
http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/gg105/haggis65/mon08/100_0906a.jpg
The truck has the offroad package (factory lift, skidplates and other stuff), looks stock but has a Detriot locker in the rear, Elocker in front, color matched Rhino lining on lower rocker panels and I run 33x12.5x17 DC IIs. In it's work life it hauls my tools, trailers and equipment to scattered work sites. Haggis, the truck, gots to work to earn its way to play.

The smaller/lighter platforms are new to me, and though I like them and they have lots in their favor, I'm still a big fan of full-size diesel-powered trucks. Here are a few tire testing posed shots of my old rig. It doesn't get much more full-size on the trail than a crew-cab long-bed :smiley_drive:
The anti-roll bars were removed years ago and what it doesn't have in suspension flex it makes up for in frame twist.
The first shot is with Toyo MT LT285/75R16E and the other two are with BFG MT LT255/85R16D.

I would really like to "build it up" but cash has been tight lately.
since that picture i added a set of 37/12.50/17's BFG KM2'S and a few more dents.
last week i was able to get a hold of some "pork chop"style tool boxes that i will install over the wheel wells and move the spare to the roof or the rear bumper
currently all my camping stuff is in crates in the back with the third seat removed .For sleeping i lay down the second row of seating and it gives us a 4.5x9ft place to sleep with a foam pad for comfort when we cannot go outside raining etc we have a 10" lcd dvd player hanging from the roof
I can carry 40 gallons of fuel and 14 gallons of water....My 2 kids sleep in a tent LOL

I only have one of the compressor and one of the air bags - it's mounted on the frame rail under the driver's seat - the tank is mounted right behind it and there is a quick disconnect on the rear bumper.
Here's the only two pics I could find:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3233/2858100839_9da9debe5d.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3130/2858101149_87e2daf570.jpg
One note - I unhooked the bottom of the airbags and made a bucket that the spacer fits down into. Hard to explain, but the airbag was actually limiting the leaf spring droop and with the size of this rig, I need all the articulation I can get. The airbag still works when I pull the big trailer and now doesn't limit any suspension droop.

The rear bumper started off as a Road Armor unit. But with all the additional fabrication and improvements, I would now call it custom.
I had to have the spare tire mount rewelded and gusseted to support the tire weight. I added the Gerry Can mount - I had the whole bumper boxed and reinforced. It's now pretty bomb proof.

In this age range ('73-'91) making one a 2500 isn't too hard. Mine started out as a 1500. I used the 14bff, rear drive shaft, and 8 lug bits from my old '79 Sub to convert this one to 3/4t brakes (Very worthwhile!!) and, for the use, an indestructible rear axle. The front conversion is about as involved as doing a brake job and wheel bearing re-pack. I'm not recalling all of the nuances, but I think you either need a 14bff from a Sub or you'll have to move the spring perches & shock mounts. I'm not positive on that though, so I'd recommend searching coloradoK5.com as it has been covered there extensively.
Or you could just buy mine & have one of each! ;)

HaznoSteel,
Yeah, that is a hitch basket buried in the quagmire. That basket is pretty much what snagged me up where the winch had to be used. I tried to go around that hole but the front left slipped right in. I am hoping my buddy gets the video up on Youtube soon. It is pretty cool to see it slide in with the front right tire spinning 6” in the air as it tried to crawl out.
Ntqds,
I did the same thing to my truck….swapped on 8 lug front brake rotors and backing plates as well as a rear 14 bolt full floater. I am on the lookout for a Dana 60 for the front but who isn’t these days. Trucks and Suburban’s use the same rear axle. You are probably thinking about a 1 ton rear axles as those do have different spring perches. Same with G-van axles. Below is a Suburban I built for a buddy in Detroit. He drove it from Colorado to Detroit after it got the floater and rotor treatment as well as a fresh turbo 6.5L diesel. He painted it all up in satin black and uses it in the U.P. of MI nowadays as well as Silver Lake. He bought it down here as you cannot find rust free anything back there.

Do you have a pic of the side of the ARB bumper ?
I wanted to see how far it sticks out from the grille area.
I have been looking at the ARB for my truck (Chevy 2500HD) but it sure looks like it sticks out more than I would like.
It doesn't look like it is tucked in as close as the LCs, Tacomas or the 4runners.

Molonlabe-
The bumper on my Tahoe actually IS for the Land Cruiser 100 series. I modded it to fit. It is a good bit smaller in overall dimensions compared to the Chevy ARB bumper. I am on vacation right now and my net connection is pretty rotten, so I cant post up cross links, but go to z71tahoe-suburban.com, go to Mid Atlantic, and check the pics from the most recent meet and greet. There are side by side photos of a Suburban with the Chevy ARB and my Tahoe with the modded LC ARB. The LC ARB sticks out about 4 or so inches less than the Chevy one.
Other pics located in the links in my sig line too. After vacation I hope to be able to post up how I modded the bumper to fit the truck.
Any questions dont hesitate to drop me a PM....

1. transplanted 6.9 IHC TD
2.Dana 60 rear/44 HD front w/1 ton disc brake conversion
3.C6 Three speed auto built w/extra clutches and lower 1st and 2nd planetary set.
4.NP 203 transfercase
5.2" Skyjacker lift and shocks
6.33/12.5/16.5 ATs will be changed 285/75/16s
and alot more.
The diesel transplant increased my short trip [8-10 miles] mileage to 14-16 mpg.
Future mods will be; different wheel tire comb., overdrive or od. transmission and upgraded exhaust.
The camper is an old Avion truck camper that has been totally gutted so I'll be starting with a clean slate. Construction is rivited aluminum with composite plywood/foam floor, walls and "wings".

Full-size! Also a little over-size at 86.5" wide not including the mirrors. It's fine on logging roads but too big for the smaller stuff. I came home with scratches after a "no scratch" ride with a bunch of Landies a few months ago.
It's a 98 and pretty much as it was from the factory with a 6.5 turbo diesel motor. The only thing missing is radio and GPS otherwise it's ready to go. Waiting for my kids to grow up a little. For now it's a camping/kayaking base.

Everytime I see your H1, I second think my decision on not buying one. When I still think about it as a DD it does make sense to go with a smaller rig. I say to myself: It's still easier to park my 2nd generation Tundra than an H1. Beautiful H1

10-14-2008, 05:09 PM
Hi all:
Although the H1 is wide it still fits in my garage with the roof rack and kayak supports in place. With standard suspension and 37" tires it is around 73" tall to the roof line so plus roof rack/yak supports, it's around 85" tall which leaves about 1" under the garage door.
It is a lot of fun to drive.

The truck amazes me every time I take it out. It really can do anything. Toughest truck ever built.

Its a constant work in progress. Recently finished shock mount mods so I could run Bilstein 7100 rezies. At 10k+ pounds, good shocks are a bonus. Next month it gets new shoes (Toyo M/T). Next week, its a nav system. This weekend going to tackle the noisey LS diff clutch pack (rear Dana 60). Anyway, here we go:

What kind of racks are the bikes held in by, did you buy an off the shelf rack or make one?

I made it by just bolting some generic fork mounts from Performance Bikes to a 2x8". It works well and the mounts are only like $10 a piece.

If your going to put it in the bed I would make your own. I just attach the bike to the fork mount and go, if I am going to be really bouncing around I bungee the back wheel to keep it from chattering around.
If your thinking of putting it in the trailer hitch I would suggest just looking on Craigslist because you can normally find some used racks for pretty cheap.
I thought about mounting some bike racks on the roof, but it is pretty awkward putting bikes on the roof of a car, much less a truck.
That was my thought process when deciding what to do with bikes, hope it gives you some ideas.

There are times though when I want to carry stuff in the truck bed for longer trips. Thats why I want to make rails that can go in any one of three locations. The old hardware store near me used to have this angle, U/C channel and square tubing that had predrilled holes evenly spaced through it, I can't remember the name for it, but I'm thinking a couple of those I could make a fork mount and some straps for the rear wheel then they would be easy to mount to anything else.

It's a 1953 M37 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 military truck.
Stock with a flathead 6 engine, all gear NP200 transfer case with a 2:1 low range, 5:83 gears in the original 9-5/8 axles.
Braden 10,000lb PTO winch up front.
So far It's been stripped to the frame blasted and painted. I changed gears to 4.89:1 in both axles, rebuilt axles/diffs etc. and installed ARB lockers front and rear.
Upgraded to 3/4 ton 4 wheel disk brakes and a modern master cylinder, all new lines.
New reproduction factory wiring harness going in.
I just received my 4bt Cummins deisel today, and am waiting for my spicer transmission from a duece and half 2-1/2 ton 6x6 army truck. I'll be putting a .69 overdrive 5th gear set in it.
It will start with a canvas top, and the army supply canvas rear cover... and I'll go from there. Should have it back up and running for a road trip before summer.
Rebuild posts are all here...

I saw earlier on this thread that someone was wondering about the fender flares on the Icelandic Arctic Trucks. here in Iceland we have to cover the tires to make the cars street legal, So we have companies making them custom from Fiberglass.
hope you like these rides:smiley_drive:

If I could only take an unmodified vehicle offroad, I'd go for a full size domestic everytime. This is my stock 04, whether i'm hauling fire wood or doing a 10 hour drive, it never blinks :ylsmoke:

I stopped watching this thread for a little bit and, boy, look at all the nice trucks. Lot's of Dodges, but ain't nothing wrong with that. TxRider's is my favorite hands-down though. I'm a fan of OD iron, so it's always nice to see a clean M37 like that.

Thanks Sport-trac..
I'm really surprised more people don't use old power wagons for expedition vehicles, they are stout old trucks, not too big, and you can still get all the drivetrain parts. They were even exported all over the world, thousands of them in the middle east, asia and S. America up to the 70's not even including the military trucks.
I always though the ambulance version of mine would be awesome, 1 ton chassis and drive train etc and lots of room. Only issue is stock gears are just two 5:83 and 4:89, kinda limits top speeds unless you swap axles.
Like this one, full time 4x4, 1 ton, tough as nails, military, and room in back to spare...

On the Toyo's, yes they wear quick, but if you keep the pressure up close to 40 PSI they last better. I got fast wear for first 10.000 miles, they I run 38 psi back and 42-45 in the front. Off road 28-32 front, 18-28 rear.I have over 30.000 miles on them and 2 look ok, but the rear two look more like slicks now. :D
That's why I got a PowerTank (10 lbs Co2 bottle) and I air them down for off road and air 'em up for on road. Works great. Currently I have about at least 2! nails in each tire and no fix a flat or slime in them and only very little air loss a month!:victory:
Now I have to safe up and get 4 new ones. (Let's rob a bank, LOL).
To black its beautiful, I had a black Crown Vic (Ex- cop car) but a pain to keep it clean too, I feel ya. But hey good looks cost a bit of work, look at models (women), it takes them 2 hours to get ready, before then get out of the bath room and spend another hour dressing, LOL.
Stock or not stock, as long you having fun! Who cares if you have a Ram, Ford, Chevy or who knows what, if you are out there and having fun thats' all that counts in my humble opinion.
ps. Do my pictures load up or you have to click on them?
On my computer I only have a link?! Any advise?

o and nice truck!!!
The 35's are a tight fit, but I have no rubbing at all so far. I haven't fully cycled the suspension yet though, I plan to disconnect the swaybar and find out if/where they might contact anything. They only work with the stock wheels (7.5" wide with 5.5" backspacing). Any more backspacing and they would contact the lower control arm at full lock, and less and they would rub the back of the fender when turning.
The only downside I've noticed so far is that my heavy duty snow chains would probably take out the rear shocks as there isn't a ton of clearance back there. Not that I need chains in Kentucky anyway.
The trac-loc is "okay". My ranger had one too. It works fine with light offroading (forest service roads and such) but it is no locker and you find it's limitations pretty quick. I liked my aussie lockers but my tires didn't as much. I'm not about to burn up these tires with an auto locker, as much as they cost.
I like the idea of the Ected lockers but I haven't heard the best reviews on them either...

The Dodge is a '99, 1500, 4x4, 5.9L. I still own it. The FWC was a little too much for it, but it's great with the camper shell. Too bad I disassembled the setup I had in the bed, but at least that gives me a reason to build an improved version if I want it. For now it's my work truck.
The diesel Chevy is awesome, but it's not as good off road as the Dodge. It's longer, doesn't turn as tight, and the frame rails are a little lower. However, that doesn't mean that I don't take it just as many places.:smiley_drive:

hey buddha, just wanted to let u know if u didnt realize by now, the decal u have on the driver side of the yakima wind fairing is upside down. i also made that mistake when i put it upside down on my gas tank cover, i am a proud supporter of magpul products and will also put the one and only decal on my truck once they send it in. it would be nice to get a sponsorship from them to finish off the mods on my truck and free pmags maybe, lol.
anyways, just thought i would point that out to ya.

thanks man, and yea dont worry i did the same thing with my decal,i had oredered the 6'' and 12'' ,the 12s on back order so i ended up rushing to put the sticker on and i really dont like any stickers what so ever on my ride, but its a good company not many know bout, anywayz, i took it off when my buddies girlfriend said it looked like a v neck tshirt in a circle lol. then i looked at a pmag and saw i had put it up side down. when i get the 12'' sticker im actually gna put it on the rear driver side window up in the upper hand corner tilted, but ill make sure its positioned upright this time.

It seems you have to host them on a site like webshots or photobucket in order for them to show up in the post. Apparently if you use expedition portal as the host the pics show as a file to be clicked on.

Nice pictures of the Dodges. I made the mistake of leaving the FJ40 at home last week when we went up into Monache Meadows via the Monache Meadows Jeep Trail. It was 106F driving thru the desert so I thought the family would rather have the A/C etc. I was amazed how well the truck did on the trail. No bumps or bruises and nothing but traction and power. I wish I could shoehorn the 6BT into the cruiser! This truck is basically stock with a 2" leveling kit. The only problem was seeing over the long hood sometimes. The only pics I have are in Monache Meadow on the way out Sunday.

When I was rebuilding the trailer JC Whitney was selling them for $14 each. I liked the retro look and stainless steel shell but had to replace the 6v bulb with a 12v one. Funny thing is they only list a left side so I spent 20 minutes looking for the right side until I realized the Model A came with only a left tail light.
I just got thru with a spring over axle conversion:

Loco: truck has just a leveling kit in it and some decent shocks. Both pics show the 315/75-16 Pro-Comp Extreme A/T's. Wore those out and bought a set of Nitto M/T's in the same size for off-road and i have a set of the 285/75 Dura Grapplers on for everyday use. I'm gettin' old and cant stand the noise from the m/ts for everyday drivin'.
vt: all the rack is Yakima i have collected over the years. The basket is a load warrior. I got it off the side of the freeway on the 580 after an accident had cleared! It must have come off the car/truck and the tow driver didn't bother to pick it up. The cross bars were still attached to it. I have a 2 seat kayak we throw up there when we are going near some water.

Hey Mr. Dino2000... How many miles did you get out of your xtreme ATs? Did you drive it hard or mellow? Regular rotations? I have an F350 and want to run those but can't get a straight answer on longevity. Thanks!
dino2000
09-03-2009, 08:53 PM
I got an honest 38K. I rotated them regularly and used them for about a 50/50 mix between everyday and desert. I wouldn't buy them again for the simple fact that for the last third of the treadlife they were insanely LOUD!
It was a good desert tire and if i lived in the desert or spent at least 80% of the time off-road i might consider them again. I ended up with the new Nitto Dura grapplers for every day and a set of Nitto M/T's for trips to Baja and beyond. The key to keeping this setup affordable is the inexpensive steel wheels. I paid 70.00 each for the black steelies.

Here's my ford. It's primarily the tow rig for my rock crawler, but I'm slowly modifying it for expedition use.
About to put in 4.56's and a rear ARB, and hopefully put a leveling kit on and some 35's after theses current BFG's wear out.
Here's the truck in all its glory.

My job box filled with the jerry cans and tie downs. Usually mounted on the trailer. The stock 29 gallon tank stinks while towing the combo below. With the V10, I'm pretty much stuck at 7-8 MPG.

How are you liking your Jayco? I couldn't find any in my area so had to choose between the Fleetwood and Starcraft. We ended up with a 2008 Starcraft14RT. It has been awesome so far. I chose it over the Fleetwood based only on build quality. Being both a cabinetmaker and steel fabricator in careers past I went for the one where things were done like I would have done them! We have sold everything and are leaving for points unknown for at least 6 months and maybe longer. It will be a good test for the Starcraft!

Thanks. I actually bought the rig as shown in the picture back in the winter of 07 from lwg(just saw he was a member here). Only thing I have done to it that differ from that picture is put some 37" iroks on, add dual batteries, and get some more body damage.
The rig works pretty well for what it is. I will post some more pictures after the next wheeling trip.

05 F350, 11,500#GVW, 6.0lTD, 5-sp auto, 3.73s, 4x4, cloth int., ps, pb, air, cruise, tilt, B&W flat bed with tool boxes, 112k miles. A lot of the problems with the early 6.0s have been warrantied already. From what I had to powerwash off from underneath, I think the previous owner overhauled and didn't take care of the truck. I sprayed for 2 days underneath. Took off 400#s of dirt and gravel. THere was 4" on top of the rear fuel tank.
I was told by city officials, the flat bed (http://www.ci.lenexa.ks.us/planning/parkingvehicles.html) is prohibited from parking in residential areas. Though it is a hard translation from the list, I don't think my truck qualifies. Doesn't matter, I told them I'm selling just the flat bed as it doesn't work for me and my needs. They didn't give me a time limit but I do have to provide documentation on the sale effort. Not a problem, just listing it in CL and provide that link to them.
Didn't know what to ask for the bed, but found another without tool boxes on top but in perfect condition for $4300. So I priced mine at $3450. I think I would prefer a service utility bed with a cap rather than a pickup bed with a cap.

I just read the web page you listed, here is your fix..........
"Where can I park an over-sized vehicle or my commercial truck?
Vehicles with a designated weight specification in excess of one ton shall not be parked in residentially zoned areas. Any vehicle taller than seven feet, wider than eight feet or longer than 18 feet shall not be parked on residential streets or property.
Other vehicles specifically prohibited in residential areas are:
• flat bed trucks
• dump trucks
• utility wreckers
• tandem axle trucks
• cab and chassis trucks (does not include standard pickups or factory built cab and bed trucks which are designed as a singular unit) if they meet size regulations
Exception: Any vehicle that is performing a service to or upon property in the block where the vehicle is parked or standard passenger vehicles, or recreational vehicles."
Put a camper top of some sort on it and call it an RV!!!!! It is SPECIFICALLY exempted from this parking statute. Hell a ladder rack with a roof top tent or soft top would also qualify, doesn't matter if they like it or not, it's the rules!!!

I have more fullsize projects than sense. Tend to prefer my trucks old and ugly compared to the pretty rigs posted up, less gets stolen. :)
My half ton project has been going on for about three years, but I had to put it on hold for the last two while I finished my masters (I needed more truck money). I'll be restarting it this winter after I finish reassembling the one ton and swapping beds this weekend on the 3/4 ton.
The half ton started like this:

Got naked for a while:

And most recently looks a little more like this:

There's been quite a bit more work done since, but not much in the way of extra pictures. It's built primarily with tight forest trails and some recovery in mind, and not too heavy on rock or mud. Once it's done we'll probably pair it later on with some sort of pop-up camper trailer. Really looking forward to getting back into this project.
The 3/4 ton will be set up initially as a light duty expedition camper. This pictures are from the last time the bed was off, but this Saturday she's about to get the pristine gray bed off the truck behind her in the photo, which went to the scrappers earlier this year. She'll also grow a fiberglass cap and a sleeping platform. She serves as my wife's daily driver to work, and our light duty tow rig (good for pulling four wheel drives out to trails, and intended to give us a place to camp in back without the work of setting up a tent).

I don't have any pictures of the one ton yet, but she's an 87 crew cab that is being built as a heavy tow rig. The last owner used and abused her heavily - he even loaded the bed with enough sand to break the bed floor (turns out that's about four tons, based on how high up the bed sides I measured marks from the sand). I've been reassembling her off and on for the last year and a half or so, but she still has quite a way to go. I yanked her bed this past Sunday, and it will be joining the bed off the 3/4 ton on the way to the scrap yard in about a week and a half. The one ton has a 92" wide dropside flatbed in her future, which I'll probably build later this fall if all goes well.
Nice board, this. Hopefully I'll have a chance to hang out a while. :ylsmoke:
