Hey Guys
Been doing some serious thinking lately and i am going to get back into riding/racing dirtbikes.
As much as i love my 80, i am thinking i might have to sell it for a double cab toyota pickup truck. Been looking at the tundras, but there is not much aftermarket support for them and they arent available with rear lockers and such. I am seriously considering buying a 06 Double Cab Taco, 4x4, Elocker, etc.... Thought about keeping both rigs and wheeling the pee out of the 80, but that just wouldnt make financial sense.
My question to all of you is, what would you guys HONESTLY think my rig is worth? Most of you know my rig, but if you dont, here is the jist:
PLEASE DONT PM ME ASKING ABOUT CERTAIN PARTS FOR SALE, IF THIS RIG IS SOLD, IT WILL BE AS A PACKAGE DEAL WITH ALL MODS, I DO NO WANT TO PART IT OUT AND WOULDNT EVEN CONSIDER IT!!!, THANKS
93 FZJ80
125k
Green
Grey Leather
Factory E-Lockers, (both lockers are BRAND NEW oem units!!!, both were acquired as complete units with all NEW gears, bearings, etc.....)
OME Lift
OME Steering Stabilizer
OME Shocks
ARB Front Bumper
Hanna Sliders
Slee Rear Bumper/Tire Carrier (picking up and installing next weekend)
Dual Batteries
African Outback Full Rack with Full Rail
(4) 33" MTR's with 90% tread, (1) 33" MTR, never used!!
44 Gallon Aux tank (total fuel capacity of 69 gallons)
Alpine Head Unit with Direct Connect iPod controls
Uniden CB
Upgraded Headlights
Upgraded Headlight Harness
BRAND NEW OEM Radiator and all new OEM Hoses
Brand New COMPLETE Front end rebuild with all new OEM bearings, seals, etc.....
All new OEM brakes!
TONS of misc stuff done as well.
Those of you that have followed my build know that not a penny has been spared to assure the best parts have gone into this rig, everything on this rig is OEM and no aftermarket parts have been installed anywhere (expect for armor and such).
Sooooooo, my question is, what do you all HONESTLY think i could get for this thing? Ballpark? Am i out of my mind trying to get $15k or so?
Figure if i can get $15k for my rig, i put $5k down on the taco, $5K for the bike, $2500 into the taco for mods, $2500 into the bike for prep/mods! Its a win win! :ylsmoke:
Any input is appreciated, feel free to give your honest opinion! :D
And for those wondering, yes, the 06 Taco Double cab will be built up just like this 80 was! :ylsmoke:
PLEASE DONT PM ME ASKING ABOUT CERTAIN PARTS FOR SALE, IF THIS RIG IS SOLD, IT WILL BE AS A PACKAGE DEAL WITH ALL MODS, I DO NO WANT TO PART IT OUT AND WOULDNT EVEN CONSIDER IT!!!, THANKS
it would cost 15k to replicate, so you may need to go cheaper. id want a bargain, or id do it myself, and know it was done right. just my opinion.

Ok, thanks for the feedback, this is what i am looking for to realize if i am in fantasy land or not.
One thing i have noticed though is that, clean, low mile locked 80's are going for $9-11k PLUS
ARB = $700
Hanna Sliders = $900
Slee Rear Bumper / Carrier $1800
MTR's = $1200
African Rack = $1100
OME Kit = $700
44 gallon tank = $1200
Dual Battery Setup = $250 +/-
Extra Little Things $500 +
Alpine CD Player = $250
Uniden CB = $100
Thats about $9000 +/- in mods that have less then 3k miles on all of them. :ylsmoke:
Probably have close to $1-2 in receipts for all the new maintenence stuff as well: Radiator, Brakes, Etc......
My rig is very clean both inside and out, when i wash it! :D
I appreciate the feedback, please keep it coming!

Honestly,
Unless someone who "knows" what they are getting wants it, you should part some of the goodies out for full cash value.
I can't believe you did all that work just to sell it though:yikes:
You've done more this year than anyone I know.

That sucks for some of us - losing a very knowledgeable 80 owner that is a serious gearhead. I just hope youll stll be a resource for the 80 if you decide to sell it.
Im not sure if you searched MUD but I know 2 that popped in my head that bought '97 FZJ80s recently: Bull and Justagirl - BeastIIs rig (http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=97615).
They didnt post the price they paid but you can probably PM them for what they paid for. BeastII took some armor off to lower the price for Justagirl.
If you decide to sell and part some mods, Ill fall in line for the Hanna sliders.
Good luck.

No way, there is no chance what so ever i would "part this out" that would end up leaving me with a bare carcass! :D

I'd say $4k tops. I'll even help you get it off of your hands if you'd like.:p JK I wouldn't think 10-15k would be that much of a stretch personally. I guess it depends alot on the appearance of it (exterior/interior). I've seen some listed for more then $15k that were built similarly. Personally, if I were you though, I'd just pick up a bike trailer and be good to go. That way you could save some cash if you want, sleeping in the 80 and not have to build up another truck. If you are using this as an excuse to buy and build a Taco, well nevermind.;)

Yeah, thats the kicker, the appearance of it isnt dazzling as it has been used for what it was built for. Hoping to find someone that reconizes how mechanically sound it is and will overlook the offroad induced blemishes of the paint and such. Inside, the interior is much cleaner then most!
Personally, if I were you though, I'd just pick up a bike trailer and be good to go. That way you could save some cash if you want, sleeping in the 80 and not have to build up another truck.
That is the other option i am looking at and in all reality makes more financial sense.

Thats not it 100% but i would like the idea of a brand new rig! (never had anything brand new)

I used to race motocross back when I was younger. My father and I would travel to the races with either a camper trailer that was converted to include an enclosed bike/tool storage area and a seperate living quarters, or we'd go light and just bring the 2 bike trailer. The bike is out in the elements but with the maintenance we did on those things it didn't really matter because we'd go through the whole thing when we got home anyway since it was subjected to far worse in the races.
I've really had the bug to get back into it lately but I like you would probably have to get rid of the Cruiser (so I could buy a beater car and a new bike, haha).
As far as the cosmetics, unfortunately I think it reduces your appeal to just the real 4 wheelers out there, as the pretty boys who probably make up more of the buying population want to look really good when they throw the 22's onto your rig.:p

Water storage:
I believe you mentioned somewhere that you will be building a platform. You could fit a RV type water storage tank in there. Ideally towards the middle of vehicle to keep weight centralized. For other storage of water, I have and highly recommend MSR dromedary bags. I am using the 10L versions and have two. They are nice b/c they are soft and flexible, but tough, so you can easily stow them when not being used.
http://www.msrcorp.com/hydration/dromedary.asp
Also, check out Desert Dudes awesome water set-up in his 80. Maybe more fancy than what you're looking for, but the tank is good.
Lastly, I am sure you figured out by now. But, take out all the seats except for the front two seats. It makes for a great amount of storage, and the dogs will dig it too!

Yeah, i think with the lack of power in the 80, a light 2 bike trailer is the only option!

First, sorry about that, I know this is serious business...
Second...I might be somehow interested in a trade for my Kaymar for your Slee...plus cash if need be.
LASTLY...I have seen Kevin's 80, which by the way is the "correct" color, and it is very nice. He has put a great deal of thought, and is extremely anal when it comes to making sure everything is done just right.
So, with that said, I think you would be hard pressed to do all those mods yourself for less than $15k. Heck, the sub tank alone with all the extra parts, etc. will run you close to $1500. That's assuming YOU do the install yourself. Anyway, off my soap box for now. I think your asking price is attainable. Like most specialty items, it might take a while to sell. But my immediate thought would be somewhere in the $14750 range (mentally easier, b/c it's less than 15K).
Oh, also not to call you out. But, I remember a posting somewhere saying how much you love the Tacos. Something about your body being folded like a Taco just to fit. :smiley_drive:
Good luck with your decision. I don't blame you though, it's difficult having TWO nice Green 80's here in San Diego. ; )

You are 100% correct. However, that comment was toward the pre 05 models. The 06's are quite a bit roomier for the driver and have much nicer/firmer seats (one complaint about previous tacos). I am still up in the air here, but if the 80 does go, it will be replaced with some sort of toyota pickup truck! :D

Look, I don't know you and I've never had the pleasure of seeing your 80 in person.
However, after watching and reading about your work and mods on this Cruiser, I implore you don't sell, keep going the way you're going. Get a Jumping Jack trailer and throw the KLR 650 up top on the rack. Instant tent, bike carrier and off road adventure trailer all in one.
An answer to your question, I think $12-$15K would be a fair selling price based on what I see 80's selling for on Mud, Autotrader.com and eBay.
The only vehicles I see that make me envious over what I already have are well equipped 80 series Cruisers. I think you might have some seller's remorse if you were to sell at this point. If nothing else, I will be remorseful because it's clear the time and effort you have put into your Cruiser and I was hoping to see it on a trail sometime.
Good luck with a tough decision!

I have been reading this post...and saying to myself...SAY IT AINT SO...
I want to buttress kcowyo comments. Way to much time invested to let it go IMO. The buyer pool is to small.
Jumpin jack trailer is a good option...

That is a sweet 80. The timing is just not right for me right now or I would be VERY interested!! I'm moving to Oahu in SEP and I'm buying a house. Otherwise I would be all over it, especially since you are in SD. Good luck. Oh, and kinda off topic, but why is your aux. tank painted black?
The grey that comes on the tank is only a primer, i wanted to top coat it to prevent possible rusting. As you see in that pic, the paint is not on the underside of the tank, that is because i have to drop the tank one more time to install the modified sending unit, then, the entire tank will be painted black.

Thanks for all of your comments and opinions.
As mentioned in the subject of this thread, this thread was more of a feeler then an announcement of sale. (hence the "possibly" in the subject line).
Yesterday was a great day though, i finally finished the FRONT e-locker install along with the birf repack and the front housing rebuild and all new brakes and bearings. Truck drives MUCH nicer now! :smiley_drive: I also finally got to plug the elocker into the harness and it works like a champ! :D
Yes, i know i would regret selling this thing, as i did when i sold my old YJ Wrangler (still regret that years later) but i am trying to justify the cost to usage ratio and the math just isnt working! :D
Thanks for all of your input!
I still have some pondering to do!

I say somewhere around 11-13k.
Problem with mods(No matter how much you spend or have) is.. you usually can only get about 50% of your money back. Everyone knows this too.
You always take a hit on mods. A stock rig sells easier too. Most people dont want what you have (most people aren't like us). If you really want to make the most out of the rig you have to part it out and put the factory springs, bumpers, sidesteps etc back on to gain more interest.

Hey Jeb
Thanks for the reply.
However, i have came to my senses and will not be selling her!!! I just finished up the front end rebuild and added the front elocker, slee tie rod and drag link and finally wired up the subtank gauge. Truck drives awesome with an entirely new front end, even got all new rod ends! :D.

I wont get into it, but i will never own another kawasucky again :D Also, as far as riding in baja (and other remote places), the XR650 are SUPER common, so parts availability would also be a selling point as well.

Kevin,
The bike I took down in a 1600 mile round trip and still have is an XR600 (1993). After the proper prep, neither me nor my buddy, who has the same bike, had 1 problem the whole trip. Not even a flat tire. We had no car, just the bikes and we were rough on them.
My bike has a "Baja Engine" kit on it which pumped it up to 660 and it runs fantastic on crappy Mexican gas. However, when I take it up to the Sierras it has some air / fuel issues because it is not set up for that.
My reasoning for buying that bike was the fact which you mentioned, there are a lot of parts down there, not to mention that, as far as I am concerned, Honda simply makes the most reliable bikes on the planet.
Some friends of mine have the CRF bikes and those are absolutely great bikes as well.
Good luck with the bike hunt.
Glad you are back on board with the 80.
Life is good. :D
