Well, as the picture shows, I've reached a point of no return.
If I can just figure what I need to do next, I'll lay off the Pepto Bismol bottle.

What gears are you moving to? Specs on your rig? :)

Doron,
I don't know if you are kidding or not about "what to do next". There are several threads at MUD about how to regear the 100 series rear and it's not pretty.
I can only assume you are going to go with 4.88's.

Can't wait to make our Hundy look like that someday!

I am going for 4.88 because of 2 reasons. A- Only Randy Gears make 5.29 for the cruiser an as I understand the gears quality is not consistent enough for me to trust it. B- 5.29 will put the 75 mph rpm at 3k witch is well above the point at which the ECU goes open loop – not where you want to be while cruising.
I am only half kidding about the – what to do next. I have talked to Ben at Slee Offroad but it seems that it will end up costing more then I would like it to. Especially, if I take into account the shipping cost for these 2 boat anchors. At any rate, as I am still waiting for an answer from Ben, this option is still open.
The other option is to go to somebody local (Arizona) but since it is not a standard gear swap, I don’t know what problems I’ll run into. I know I need to buy a rear gear set of an 80 and an 80 diff carrier but the rest of the parts, I am not sure.
Lastly, I can try to do the whole thing myself (so far nobody touched my truck for the 7 years I’ve owned it) and “hope” for the best. This option will be cheapest but it would take the longest…
I have searched the mud and have not found a list with real technical info/write up. If you have found one and can point me to it, it’ll be great.

Looking at your specs, did you have any probs fitting the 315s with only the 863s and OME bars?

Not realy but ther is slight rubbing. Tire fittment has nothing to do with spring rate or ride hight. Unless you limit the suspension travel - which is something you want to avoid IMHO.
I do have Slee T bars up front. I actualy also have a Sway-A-Away set I do not use ...

Both my 40 and 80 series run 315s so it'd be a natural jump when the Hundy gets mod'd, but that's a couple years down the line for now.

-Let me know, i am pretty sure i still have a complete 3rd from the rear of my 80 with 120k and 4.10 gears!
-Not that this helps you regear or anything, but a good friend of mine has a BRAND NEW in the box 100 series e-locker with gears and such that he has had for awhile (bought it off of ebay advertised as an 80 series unit). This thing is brand new and he is looking for $800 or so
-Are those rear shafts from your 100? i didnt know that the 100 series were semi-floating, this true?

Doron,
Sorry I forgot to subscribe to this thread.
Contact Dan (spressomon) from the 100 series forum at Mud. Dan just did this and it was a PIA but he has good feedback. I know he is working on a write-up and may be done and ready to post it?
I would love to regear to 4.88 someday but I will not do this until I need tires in a couple years. I plan on having gears cut and will not go this hybrid route personally.

Doron....I know you are more than capable of doing the work. Have you looked into the expense of shipping your parts to Slee and having hime slap it all together and ship it back?

Thanks for the put. I have been talking to him for a while now and got some ideas from him. He has been very helpfull.
BTW setting up a gear cutter for a 1-2 gear set will cost you like a nice used cruiser. not to mentiuon the heat treatment and such. Been there.

Shipping both of these boat anchors became a show stopper for me. The mod is a no brainer. As a matter of fact, I would hardly call it a mod. Once you see it, the rear of the 80 and 100 is almost identical.
Besides I enjoy working on it and learning the truck. You never know when I'll need to put this experiance to practice. I'ts not my DD and I am not in a hurry.

I haven't priced this yet, but I have some contacts left over from when my family had a machine shop. I think I can make it happen if I order 10-20 sets.
Not planning on doing new (bigger) tires for another 25k so this won't be for a while.

Interesting pics on the diffs. I've never seen either of the 100 diffs in person, so that was interesting. I assume the front IFS diff is a Toyota 8" ring gear, looks a two pinion. Seems like gears for that would be relatively easy to find? Unless there's something special about them.
If I understand correctly, the rear of the 100s are unique diffs that are humongo 9.5 inchers that are even bigger than the 80 series rears? Is that why the problem finding gears?

The front 8" r&p is the same as the 80 series. The rear is a little different.
The 2 pinion design was for 98-99 and the 00+ is a 4 pinion.

Yes on the first one. Same R&P as 8" Toyota (Land Cruiser or otherwise)
In the rear the R&P are the same size as the 80 but the ring is mounted with bolts (no nuts) from the back into tapped holes - like the front. The 80 uses trough holes in the ring and is mounted to the carrier with bolts and nuts. This is why you change to a 80 carrier when you want to re-gear the back diff. which enables you to use the 80 R&P - readily available.
The trick is that since the 100 axles are larger then the 80, you need to use the original carrier cap from the 100 onto the 80 carrier. otherwise the axle will not go through when you close everything up.
Also, the carrier bearings of a locked diff are larger the a non-locked one. Don't ask me how I found out.:( :(
If you need more details, let me know.
Doron.

I should more details once i pick up my 2000 100 series tomorrow from Sean at RiverCity Diffrential. The parts he need is a long list!
He started last Thursday to install ARB lockers and regears, only to find out that one of the three ARB locker he ordered correctly arrived with wrong model number, costing us two days.

Front is done.
Used a diff lock switch from the 80 to activate the ARB valve. Also, installed a pressure switch down stream of it to activate the stock front diff lock indicator so now I have 3 indicators lit when the truck is fully locked.
While I was in the instrument cluster I also found that it has an indicator for a rear tire carrier ajar so I hocked it up using a door courtesy light switch. Hope it'll prevent me driving around with the carrier open.

Nice, I was hoping to get the diff lock lights to light up on my LX but looking at the wiring diagrams to the instrument cluster, I could only find the CDL light, no lights for a front nor rear locker. I'll have to look at it again more closely.

I am done, John.
Sweet! Everything is back to normal - rpm, power ...
Played with the lockers yesterday. Actualy got the truck stuck in an of cambered deep rutt when the CDL and RDL were locked. Both rear wheels were spinning and the truck wasn't going anywhere, just slided sideway, digging itself deeper. Locked the front and it craweld up. Stange feeling.
If it wasn't for the FDL, it would have been winch time.
Also, it's nice to see all 3 diif lock indicators light up in the instrument cluster.

Since I got inquiries about the Front Diff Lock (FDL) indicator, here it is.
The FDL indicator is to the right of the RDL indicator which is to the right of the CDL. From left to right - CDL, RDL, FDL.
I have installed a ~75psi Normally Opened pressure switch downstream of the FDL activation solenoid. One lead of this solenoid goes to ground and the other to the indicator. Since the indicator gets power with the Ignition, when the solenoid opens the pressure switch closes and the indicator get ground and lights up. This scheme gives you assurance the locker did get the activation air pressure, and if the locker did not mechanically failed, the front axle is locked. It is not as “closed loop” as the Toyota system but it’s better then the ARB wiring that just shows FDL “switch on”.
I soldered a small gauge wire to the PCB where the connector is soldered to the PCB. The picture shows the pin on a 1999 TLC instrument cluster. I think the bulb was there. The bulb was not there for the spare tire carrier ajar, which I also wired…. Or it’s the other way around… can’t remember.
I hope this helps.
