No I'm not the guy who dresses my dog and goes to Starbucks and if thats you shame on you! It's a dog! But holidays are ok so maybe I'm a hypocrite well I can live with that. My question is who makes cold weather gear for dogs? I have a vizlsa and she's not a real furry dog acctually quite the opposite. We purchased the jacket in the picture from OldNavy a year ago for $8 on clearance. She enjyoed the added warmth while playing in the snow. Now she has outgrown it and I would like to purchase a jacket she can wear a couple years when it's cold or snowing.

We winter camp with our yellow Labs, and they love these things. They work well.

My pooch would freak if I tried the bootie thing....she is a Husky Sheppard so cold is her middle name. I actually have more problems with her when its hot out...
Anybody know of an evaporative cooling vest for a dog? :)

It's called the back of the car with AC on full blast!
Before I knew my dog was part Husky I tried those booties for snowshoeing trips...she was totally fine with them. But then she's also a really...really...really relaxed sort of pup:

As for coats, go with either Ruffwear or GraniteGear...they both make super reliable gear, I've use both and the bed I currently have for Shira is a Ruffwear one from like 6 years ago(was my sisters Border Collie's first).

When we lived in So. Calif. we trimmed our Husky's body fur down to the undercoat. She looked like a freak since her body fur was short and gray and her head (untrimmed) was long and black/white, but she loved it and did not spend the whole summer panting and shedding. First winter in Nor.Calif. she spend the winter laying out in the cold rain going 'this is the life'.

Bostons are known for getting cold easily. Also, they get hot very fast too. Not a very extreme weather dog, thats for sure.
Here's Dixie with her Jacket. We found it at a local Petsmart or Petco, cant remember. It's pretty cool, cause the hood comes off. And its not tormenting her, she actually likes it and it serves a purpose, other wise we have to hold her in a blanket with us around the fire when its cold out. We plan to snow camp this year so it will work well. If you found a jacket for $8, i would jump on it. The one in the pics below costs as much as a humans jacket!

Dixie is one of those dogs you could set a wine glass on her head and she'll just sit there. She doesn't mind at all. I've had other dogs that will try and bite me if tried such a thing. Here she is with her Doggie PFD..

The K9 Overcoat by Ruff Ware works well. Especially for dogs with broad chest and skinny waist. It has a nylon water proof material on the outside and fleece on the inside. I put it on Indy when we go to the snow and or at nights when camping at elevation. There is even some reflective material on the edges.
A word of advice about Ruff Ware boots. Sometime you see the discontinued boots on sale for. Do not buy them. There is a crease/thread inside that gave my dog bolisters on top of his paws. It even rub off some fur. I called Ruff Ware thinking they would provide a solution since they were 50$ for the set. Thats more than some people shoe. They told me to put baby socks on my dog to use as a liner. It was obviously a design flow so they discontined them. Their new Bark n boots are completely redesign and fit a lot better.

I'll second everything that has been said about Ruff Wear. I have not tried the new 3D boots but the old ones sucked. For boots check out Neo Paws, the winter boots are great, stay on and are sold in pairs, not fours.
If you want a warm dog, the Ruff Wear coat and crash pad are hard to beat. Campmor recently had some smokin' deals on the crash pad.
I have not tried the Granite Gear coats, but the backpacks are ok. Most dog coats from clothing companies (Old Navy, Lands End, etc.) are not really designed for active dogs. If you look at the dogs you see on the trail, most are sporting Ruff Wear or Granite Gear and there is a reason for it.
Now that I've said all that, if you are just looking to keep an inactive dog warm (like in the tent) a standard (for humans) North Face small or extra small vest works pretty well.

My pooch is a hair ball. This is good for the cold temps but collects the snow on her paws as she walks. I've tried the old Pam cooking spray on her to keep the snow off but have now resorted to dog booties. I use cheap red/Courdura ones from Alaska Mill and Feed. They are $1.75 each so not a big loss if she looses one in the deep snow. Ya I admit I dress my dog too.

I stumbled across one of these in REI the last time I was there. Might have been Ruff Wear. I'll check. Was $50. Looked pretty decent.
My GSD Akita mix could use one. Loves the cold, starts hunting shade if its sunny and > 70 degrees (Should have seen her crossing the Mojave last summer :) ).
Have also had good luck using a 'furminator' brush to get rid of most of the undercoat. Dog is cooler and less fluffy.
I've used the boots on my older Basset hound and Golden Ret. They both walked funny when they first got them (was really, really, really funny to watch) But after a bit they seemed to like them, especially in the snow we had in the NE.

My daschund wears a Ruff Wear PFD, but we have not tried their clothing, but I do think they make solid products based upon the PFD quality.
You might find a solution in making something. If you know someone that can sew, take an old jacket of your own, cut it up, fit to your dog and fab out a custom piece of clothing for them. I have started leveraging a sewer I have in the family and it's really paying off!

not exactly cold weather gear, but it does help keep him warm on a chilly Texas night.

Calamaridog has a fleece jacket from Petco (Reese brand?) and some mittens. She can play in the snow all day with that stuff on.

I bought several neoprene vests for my Labs when I was doing a lot of cold weather waterfowling. They work very well.
Have two for sale cheap if you dog is the right size...

Just a thought: Anything that compresses a dog's fur takes away the insulation - A tight coat on a medium or long hair dog may be colder than no coat at all. Just like putting a heavy blanket over a down sleeping bag.
I'm working on getting my Australian Shepherd to wear Doggles when riding in the convertible. I don't know why.

We picked this jacket up at Walmart for our Boston Terrier. Looks like a carhart for dogs.
