a boat that I just bought came with a Garmin Etrex. are these any good, worth keeping or should I upgrade to something better? it seems pretty basic, no street maps.

They work. Whether it's enough for you really depends on what you want to do. Seems to me on a boat you might want something with nav charts (unless it's a boat used on small lakes ?), rather than street maps:D

What version of ETrex? Vista, Summit, etc.?

My Vista has been pretty good, though the screen is starting to fail after about 4 years of use.

it is the yellow one, all it says is Etrex

Yeah, the basic eTrex will have limited use as it has no base maps and a clunky interface. I have one for a back-up unit.
