I like these 2

The first was looking back from the sunset at Cayo Cosata 2 years ago on a 5 day sailing expedition in South Florida on our Sea Pearl 21 sail boat. It is a cool little boat with a camping cabin

Here is a link to see what our sail boat looks like. sea pearl 21 (http://www.marine-concepts.com/sp21.html) We love it. We have actually talked about trailering it up to the great lakes for a trip around the northern passage.

The next is me goofing at the north rim of the canyon.

Here are a couple I like. If I were not on the modem at home now I'd find more, but my website takes too long to load! :(

Here is the moonrise over Isla Miramar, also known as "El Muerto" in Baja Norte. It's farther than it looks, we kayaked it the next morning and it was over 3 miles away, long time in yak in ocean swells for a newbie kayaker. The light on the right is a small lighthouse.

http://www.chucksweb.net/Albumatic/Baja05Chuck/L_DSCF0695.jpg

Here is one of me looking like Indiana Jones. :victory: This is in one of the side canyons in Black Canyon, a ten-mile stretch below Hoover Dam. Almost every side canyon has really nice hot-springs, the water rushing over my back is ~ 85 degrees. The pool we sat in a couple hundred meters up the canyon from here was ~98 degrees.

Wow, Chuck (or should I say Indy) - I LOVE that image in the waterfall.

Here are two from our sea kayaking trip to the Arctic Ocean (drove to Inuvik via Dempster Highway - dropped boats in Mackenzie - paddled to Tuktoyaktuk - hitched a ride on a float plane back) in 1993. One of our all-time best adventures. The water was so cold, I had to wear a drysuit the whole time. I miss that kayak - custom made, to jonathan's horror, with PURPLE coaming :D , named Chile del Mar. It was nearly brand new and when the pilot strapped it onto the pontoon for the ride back, and he put his foot on the deck and yanked the strap til the fiberglass creaked, boy did i have to stifle a shriek!

That is a great picture. I've often thought when traveling to developing world countries of bringing along a little photo printer, to give those we meet a chance to have photographs of themselves, which some may have never had a chance to own. Kind of a chance to make that whole cultural exchange a little less one sided.

Funny you should mention that - we've been shopping for one. I'm looking around at various options, to make sure the cost of upkeep isn't prohibitive (cost of ink, paper) - Canon is coming out with one soon, called the Selphy CP510, which looks portable and is around $100 retail, i think. It's supposed to create from mini size up to 4x8 images pretty fast, is PictBridge enabled (most new digitals require it for direct printing), uses battery for remote printing, and is Bluetooth enabled for printing from cell phones!

Our exchange wasn't one sided, though - check out these fun shots. We gave the Maasai warriors our cameras (5 Canon D60 and 20Ds!) and they learned how to use them really quick and spent half an hour taking pictures of us (turnabout is only fair) and their friends and village. That's when we wished we had the printer. we'll try to find them when we return next summer, but it will be hard.

http://www.jandrhanson.com/pictures.jpghttp://www.jandrhanson.com/turnabout.jpg

Nathan - if you want to compare notes on these (since it looks like we're all in the same line of work?), we could start another thread on that. Anyone who does adventure travel by vehicle should consider a portable printer now.

I'm sure that was a fun experience for both sides. It sure that printer would have been fun to have.

Maybe its the guilty liberal in me, but I feel like we as tourists get the most of these cultural exchanges, even though I try to go to great lengths to even it out. Of course I don't want to be the "ugly american" and throw money at them, since that's probably just as bad (if not worse).

Actually my wife works for publishing company that produces curriculums for kids from toddlers on up. At the end of every semester, they let the employees have free reign of the unsold toys, etc so we try to bring a box of stuff to give out to kids that we meet along the way on our trips.

Jonathan and I have been leading backcountry adventure trips for nearly 20 years - sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez, guiding in the Sierra Madre/Copper Canyon, and in Africa - and the cultural interface is something we're always confronting with guests. Sometimes it's one-sided, but not always. Many times it's a challenge, though! Like the American ladies on one trip in Seri Indian country who wore (despite our request for them not to do so) their teenie bikinis when visiting the villages, and the people on our Africa trip who wanted to give money to the Maasai kids.

Far from being "guilty liberal" it's just human caring - we've got a lot, they have very little.

Those very feelings are why jonathan and I are involved now in community-based conservation in the southwestern US and in Africa. In the recent past I ran conservation organizations that work with local people to protect their ways of life and the natural areas on which they depend - ranchers, and African pastoralists - and i'm about to leap back into the fray running a new African Conservation Fund.

On the projects that we're working on, if the communities want to do so, we get involved in helping to build capacity to deal with issues such as education, health, and environmental quality. These projects are anything from locally owned/operated tourist camps, to guide services, to bush-craft products like basketry or carvings, or art like jewelry. It's always at the behest of the community - we only do so if invited, and only after lots and lots and lots of community meetings to make sure all parties reach consensus on issues.

Then, when we bring groups and guests to a village, the opportunities to help the community center on a specific project rather than individucal handouts - money goes to a community fund, and is spread around more equally. We might help with the school, buy gifts from the new women's coop, or help build a water cachement.

And you're right about handouts for sure: they are not the way to help people. The community leaders for the most part really discourage it. They don't want their community members to become dependent on any type of charity; they'd much rather see sustainable resource-based economic development.

Community-based conservation is a passion of ours - if you're interested in learning more, especially in Africa, we'll be building up the website and other information for the African Conservation Fund (http://www.africanconservationfund.org) in the next 6 months. I'll be based in Nairobi and the US - and likely will be coming to Colorado for some fundraising!

I was really inspired recently by Pangaea's website and their fantasic images, and also by our conversation about responsible/ethical tourism - so to reward myself for 5 straight hours of working on a particuarly onerous job, I put together this "Faces of Africa" panel from Jonathan's shots from our Tanzania trip, because to me, adventure is also about the wonderful people we meet and new wildlife we see (also inspired, as always, by Scott and Stephanie's photos):

I am headed to SLC/Moab tomorrow for a short course on salt tectonics. Should be fun, Deadhorse, Upheaval Dome, Castle Valley, Onion Creek and Salt Valley. Some modest hikes, no camping and no 4 wheeling to speak of unless we go up/down the Schaeffer (sp?) Trail in 15 passenger vans. Did it once and don't think I would want to do it again.

Can't take credit for that one or the trailer with the flat tire. The photos that are labeled with a location are mine. The first post didn't state whether it was a favorite picture that you've taken yourself or just a favorite photo. I threw in the trailer & lightening pics because they are favorites I have saved that I thought others might enjoy.

The lightening photo I saved from NASA's Pic of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html)

An old lock I found on a door at the Hacienda de San Diego in Chihauhua, Mexico. It says "JAZZ" on it. This is one of the coolest places I have seen in Mexico. It was owned by a man once considered the wealthiest in Mexico, and was taken from him by Pancho Villa during the revolution.

http://bajataco.com/sierra2003/L_sm_005.jpg

Secret cove - one of my favorite places in Baja. We camped here for a while and I spent one day hiking south of here along the coast and saw absolutely no trace of man, which is a fantastic experience. There were no roads or trails into this area, no trash, nothing washed up on the beach (except natural things) no structures, no planes in the sky, and I couldn't even see any boats on the water. It was cool to walk in a place and see it exacty as it must have been for someone walking there hundreds of years ago. Perfect solitude.

That nightime lighting photo is pretty incredible. Out of curiosity, how long of an exposure was that?

I'm always curious how people get such amazing night shots. I have played around with every conceivable aperature, shutter, and film speed and can't seem to get quality night shots without some artificial lighting somewhere.

Take a look at the trajection of the stars meaning that must have been a very long exposure, but with the moon apparently somewhat full the fstop was probably really high which always leads me such such poor quality shots on a 35mm (granted this was likely not 35mm).

Anyone here can provide some additional hints for night photos?

The best photography I've ever done was on 5x7 pinhole camera, but totally amateur.

Thanks! For the sepulcher shot, I had my camera on a tripod with an attached shutter release cord; I waited for someone to walk by, opened the shutter for about 5 seconds, and manually triggered the flash in my other hand. I was so happy to see that it worked once I got the film to the darkroom!

No, but I was out there two weeks previous. I like The Cliffs but I certainly would prefer expeditions or even mountain passes over Offroad Parks. I really need to move West :)

No, but I was out there two weeks previous. I like The Cliffs but I certainly would prefer expeditions or even mountain passes over Offroad Parks. I really need to move West :)

I'm in Lindenhurst, by the way.

I saw a yellow FJ on the road right outside the park had to figure it was heading there. I'm with you, Cliffs fills a quick fix but the bouncing and banging on those trails made for quads is driving me to plan a month trip in the near future.

Cool thread, I've got a few:

the Narrows, at Zion:

Lions Back from the northwest. Natural lighting, straight out of the camera, but not handheld:

Lions Back, from the nub to the west, up high with a long telephoto. Makes for an interesting perspective:

TerriAnn, your Upper Antelope Canyon photo is one of the best I've seen of that type of formation.

Brian, your use of color is amazing. I particuarlly love the play of light on your Cottonwood Canyon shot. I have so much to learn!

Stunning shots. I just love to visit western wall of Jerusalem. To approach the Wall and to pray silently beside it you must wear a hat. Prayers took place there everyday and night.

Maybe we need to start calling him Indy! Reminds me a lot of Dr. Jones.

HAHA!! I looked at before reading that it was actually him and thought he had just posted a photo from one of the Indiana Jones movies. That is a pretty sweet photo

These have been scanned from transparencies and reduced in size and have doubtless lost some of the original (natural) lighting and resolution, but they're still some of my favorites:
