Dream Expedition vehicle.
What is your dream Expedition vehicle? What engine and or type of fuel? How would it be equipped?
Outback

For me my Dream Expedition vehicle would be based on a Volvo C306 or TGB 1317. This is the Swedish 6X6 radio truck. The engine would be transplanted with a Baby Power stroke Diesel engine and a NV4500 or NV5600 transmission. The inside would see a restroom and very small shower facility. Diesel burners for cooking. room to sleep 4 adults comfortably. A/c and heater would be from RED DOT with an auxillary diesel fired heater for those cold nights camping. 35" Super swamper Trxus MTs all around. On board air system and all the usual goods needed.

This is a Volvo C306 that has been outfitted for Expedition use. This is close to what I would like.

Mine would have to be a Land Cruiser 75 series Troop Carrier. Like this one only white.

Diesel please. Set it up with living accomodations in the back and the requisite recovery gear and I'm good to go. My 80 is getting close to my dream, but this would be the ultimate for me.

OK...I think I changed my mind...maybe.
I have been ogling the Pinzgauer 710K and think that might make a great expedition vehicle project...interior conversion, incorporate a pop up tent into the roof, extended range fuel tank...might be a winner!
Who knows? :ylsmoke:

This baby right here. It's got the best of all worlds. Very compact, short so it's easy to turn around on the trail. Plenty of camping room, pop up. It's Toyota 70 series, which is all ya need.
I'd want the latest Toyota turbo diesel I-6, but as long we're dreaming, make mine with the very, very latest Toyota diesel V-8 they're coming out with in a year or two.
Of course fully locked, but I'd keep the lift and tire size minimal for better handling with all that top end weight.
Oh, and the bumper has to go. I would do something much different than the one in the pics. :D

Here's mine, see photo below. We have a similar sort of wide ranging topic going on in our "Blazer Chalet & GMC Casa Grande owners" Yahoo Autos Groups forum, Doug W. hinted that I should check out this site...
I simply live for my yearly Colorado Rockies "expeditions"! I've had to 'make-do' for 10 years with a car having 3 inches of ground clearance, a tent with no heater, and a cot that is getting more uncomfortable with each passing of my 39th birthday anniversary. Call me lazy for not wanting to walk more, but my objective within a year or two is to take my 1977 Blazer Chalet (purchased in March 2006, currently being refurbished) to places I can't get to with my '86 Volkswagen GTI, camp there for as long as I wish and explore the really gnarly nasty narrow roads with my future 2wd motorcycle (Rokon Scout most likely), which will be easier to maneuver than a quad. Or I think it will, at least.... I'll drive off that bridge when I get to it......

New OKA NT Model
OKA's NT model vehicle was designed so that it would meet Australian Military vehicle requirements. Other new design requirements that were put upon the new NT model OKA were to bring the exhaust emission up to world standards, namely the new Euro III exhaust emissions and at the same time enhance vehicle capabilities for all OKA 4WD users.
Part of the design program was to also try and include more off the shelf/most used automotive components. Making spares even more readily availiable and cheaper to our world market whilst at the same time reducing servicing/running costs.

It's the Bucher Duro, the replacement to the Pinzgauer for the Swiss military.
I like that it can be loaded in a 20' container without help, making it much more reasonable to transport overseas. Size is just about right so you can still get into some tight places, something important for the type of places I like to go.

I LOVE that Bucher Duro...the hard-sided popup is such a great design.
Just went to the website...bummer...outside shower, only carrys 30 gallons of H2O, and no mention of a toilet either (cassette or otherwise)...No mention of price either but it's probably around $200K...gotta have an inside shower for those $$$$

Size wise the Bucher Duro would be a hard package to beat. I saw that exact model in a rocky river bed down in Batolpilas, Copper Canyon with Euro plates. The top was popped, lights on, back door open.....
Had I met them on the road I would have stopped to talk. I generally don't like to disturb anyone set up in a wilderness camp. It rained like a bugger that night - my wife and I couldn't help but wonder if they were alright...

I think I may be lucky enough to already own my dream expedition vehicle! Needless to say, I have quite a bit of work to do in order to bring it up to "snuff", but as far as the 4xVan being a good foundation, I couldn't ask for more. I'll never have the articulation of a Landcruiser or the interior space of a camper based Unimog, but parts are a dime a dozen and its already proven its worth on-road and off for everything I'll ever encounter in my travels.

my vote is definitely for Land Cruiser 70 or 75. They are absolutely bullet proof. i drive a 70 series with 405000 Km on it at my place in nicaragua. load it with up to 23 people for missionary work and drive 2hrs on rough terrain. It never leaves us stranded day after day.. and yes that people count includes roof rack, rear bumper and side step bars. no im not kidding..
a nicely modified low mileage 75 would be perfect...

Hello. This my first post on the portal. What a great thread! Anyway, on to the dream expedition vehicles.
The first two pics are the truck I just got and plan on visiting everywhere I ever wanted to go in. The first pic is my actual truck-second is for reference. It expands!
The next pic is what I'm building to pull behind it(have truck to start with-not built like this yet).
And the last pic is a crappy photoshop pic of the electric mountain bike I'll be building to go with it all.
I plan on touring the US for now, working the kinks out of/building up the vehicles, working odd jobs, and visiting old friends. Once I'm all setup and figure out a way to have an income, I'd like to head down through Mexico and South America.

An old M800 series 5 ton, is it? Interesting. That's an old vehicle, so make sure you have a good source for spares. We had a couple of those when I got to Germany in 1987 but they were quickly being replaced by the more modern M900 series trucks (biggest difference being that the 900 series had automatic transmissions.)
I presume you're already familiar with the MVPA (http://www.mvpa.org)? If not you should join, they are a great source for parts and service on old military vehicles.

You know, my gut instinct to this question would be a Maximog, or Tatra, or Man, something ginormous that you could survive in for the duration of an average Antarctic winter with a family of 8 people.
However, thinking it over, and pondering where I would want to take this vehicle across the face of the earth, something that large (even given to me for free) would be a pain in the butt to transport in comparison to something smaller that would fit in a sea can.
And I couldn't imagine trying to navigate the tight streets of a small third-world town in an 8-wheeled giant. That's not to mention some of the tighter mountain passes that can be encountered in those same countries...
My own ideal machine would be capable of carrying and supporting a family of 5 comfortably, not have to exit the vehicle to access the living/sleeping area, fairly capable 4x4 (of course) but doesn't have to be crazy. Other than that, the standard expo-type requirements, diesel engine, long range tanks, fridge/freezer, decent amount of storage, some sort of shower faciliyies, even exterior one, etc.
It seems like what I would conside "ideal" is a bit tough because I want lots of interior space, but not too much exterior space. I guess I want the magical elevator off of Dr. Who. lolololol
That newer Australian Oka machine looks promising, albeit pricey...
Maybe in 10 years I'll be able to afford one. :D

Can seat 7 adults. Can access sleeping area in rear. Has plenty of storage room. I would install some type of flip up rear roof section like on the Orange Toyota earlir in this thread. Front and rear Warn 16.5 24 volt winches. Wayne Hanson custom built front and rear bumpers plus storage racks ect. And throw in the new International 3.0 4 cylinder diesel (184 hp) and you have one of the best Overland / Expedition vehicle around! 19" of ground clearance under the diffs really help off road not to mention the 3 full locking diffs on demand! :victory:

I am thinking of doing this with my Scout. What I have to do is find another hard top and have that modified to be a pop-up camper top.
They would just have to take measurements inside the truck and then cut and build. My truck would be available to drive until the very day it's installed.

I have a thing for box on wheels design.
So, if we are dreaming, I would take a diesel powered H1, carve about a foot out of the center of it to make the width a little more sane, slap on the deep water kit and a full length roof rack and I would call it a day.

More realistically, give me a 4 door first gen Trooper with a nicely mildly built and boosted VW TDi with a Toyo 5 speed, and I would be very happy. Something like this but 4 door.

I used to dream about the Unicats and Mog camper conversions....saw my first one way back in the late 80s and spent near 20yrs dreaming of them. Then I realized how big, heavy, expensive and difficult it would be to drive that in most places in the world. So I gave up dreaming about them...still admire them but no longer dream to own one.
Besides Nissan, Toyota and Benz I question everything else for reliability and availibility of parts on a global scale.
These days I am much more realistic. I want a Patrol. High roof GQ or custom Ute cab. TD42 worked turbo intercooled, mated to an domestic auto like a TH400 and then an Atlas 4spd. Either the high roof converted to a camper platform or the Ute with a camping platform bed. In 2012 these become legal to import into the USA...I will be owning one!

Move the double-spares to the outside of the cage, and wall the cage to make a camper out of it. Lift it a bit, maybe extend the cab to 4 doors. That would be awesome. :)

With one of those on board? You've got two options.
Use it like you would; store the unicat on the boat and egress at your port of choice.
Or, gut nearly all of the boat except for steering and living quarters, and just build a giant switchback system from the bottom of the hull to above the water line with a turnaround pad at the top of the "mountain" so you can drive it back down. Simulate nature along the pathways in between the switchbacks. Take that inside of a hurricane and enjoy your "quaking switchbacks." You gotta have something to do at sea, you know...

Since I see you're talking about floating a big rig, I thought I'd mention that this LARC is back on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Amphibious-LARC-LX-60-ton-Rescue-Salvage-Supply-Cargo-/250643891920?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Military_Vehicles&hash=item3a5b8a46d0). They have been asking $125k for it for years, now I see that they have a buy it now of $90k. What a deal!

Since I see you're talking about floating a big rig,
What I meant was, you build a switchback landscape INSIDE the boat with the hull deck removed except for steering and living quarters, and then drive your unicat all around the landscape while at sea.

I think Adventure Trailers (http://www.adventuretrailers.com) makes it, but i haven't seen it on the site for the JK yet..
And my dream expedition vehicle would either be a 2011 EarthRoamer XV-LT with most of the ER options, Rigid LED lights, and the new 6.7L Power Stroke, budget allowing.. or a RRC with VM Motori 3.0L Diesel and AutoHome OverCamp RTT. :safari-rig:

I thought that with a narrow (like the narrow Autohome Overcamp that is oriented lengthwise) design instead of the roof rack stuff, a Swedish "offroad" bumper with 3 Lightforce lights and with a Aus style indoor cabinet/drawer storage system from the front seats back this could make a great vehicle

When I was in my 20's, one of my fantasies was to own a Mike 8 (LCM, landing craft with a ramp bow), with living quarters in the well deck and a jeep or old Power Wagon (40's-50's vintage) in front. Run up on the beach, drop the ramp, and drive into town. Ah, the fantasies of youth.... :)

Why? There isnt much out there that isnt a known fault and that cant be fixed with readily available stuff. Do they have their quirks? Sure they do but sometimes thats the fun of it.
Its not the destination, its the journey...and a Land Rover makes sure of that. Sometimes the windows, sometimes they dont. Sometimes central locking works, sometimes it doesnt. I dont mind. Makes the trip a little more interesting.

You guys crack me up w/all the "creative" choices you've entered into this thread.
One thing I noticed was an overwhelming choice for Diesel engines - that's great and certainly the best choice for maintenance AND for fuel availability. Also, diesel stores well and that battered 55gal. drum over by the chicken coop in the middle of nowhere, 3rd world is probably good enough to fire up your vehicle. Gasoline goes bad so fast in hot climates I'd use diesel myself.
I guess we're all romanticists at heart and masochists on a daily basis if we choose Rovers and/or ex-military vehicles. I love my 109 Land Rover and I trust it implicitly because I personally rebuilt every nut, bolt, and rivet myself. And I've owned it for almost 30 years now - But, I'd never drive it more than 100 miles a day because it's so uncomfortable for anyone over 4'6" tall. If it's not fun, why do it?
There's a bunch of great old military spec machines and many would seem to be excellent candidates until you try to go across a border ck point between warring countries. You might get your vehicle impounded or refused at best. Ex-Mil vehicles done right might be civilianized enough by painting - but parts for a H1, Pinzgauer, Volvo c series, etc aren't in every 3rd world's (or Industrialized world's) parts store. And you're gonna need that part to get home...
As much as it pains me, I think the best vehicle would be a Ford or GM 3/4 to 1 ton truck chassis equipped w/4x4 and diesel engine. Probably a manual gearbox because they're easy to field repair. Parts are current and either in stock or easily shipped from a zillion locations worldwide. Do a custom bed/camper like the Turtle 5 and you could go anywhere in the world you wanted without raising eyebrows at the border and get replacement parts easily (if even needed). And if you get jacked along the way you go buy another one just like it. (Wouldn't you be P.O'd if someone stole your pride and joy you spent years and a bunch of money on while you were traveling down in Patagonia??). You don't want to have too much invested in a vehicle you are using where people don't have insurance and/or D.L.'s or where the local militia thinks your ride is better than their ride - remember THEY have the auto weapons, not you.
A couple strategically placed stickers from this site along w/your favs would put some of the romaticism back into the equation and you and your family would be safe and comfortable in the ride as well.
But, I do know where we can get some cherry Saxon APC's with ultra low miles if you guys want to do a group buy!! :smiley_drive:

I've always been partial to this one.
http://www.unicat.net/en/info/BS6KD.html
It's the Bucher Duro, the replacement to the Pinzgauer for the Swiss military.
I like that it can be loaded in a 20' container without help, making it much more reasonable to transport overseas. Size is just about right so you can still get into some tight places, something important for the type of places I like to go.
Isn't it to high for a standard container?
On http://www.bush-sweepers.org/e/bildere.htm they claim a container is only 228cm high.
A Duro is 265cm high, I don't think 'container wheels' will be enough.
