View Full Version : ARRL Ham Radio Licence Manual available to site members-

crawler#976

It is available as a loaner to site members - you pay shipping both ways, or hold it until it's requested by the next member.

Per a suggestion from Wil, each person that uses the book will be asked to sign the inside front cover and put in their new call sign!

EDIT:
The test questions on the online self testing sites are not current as of 01 July 06. Until they are updated, the ARRL Manual is probably the best prep available.

Update: QRZ has the correct question pool online, and used it in conjunction with the book to pass the test easily. I used the numbered tests (1 thru 12) questions vs. the random test - all the questions are covered that way.

Thanks

Mark

Mark,
I am not aware of any recent changes in the licensing exams. So, while the internet test sites may not have ALL the current questions, they will be excellent learning tools. I would advise taking the tests on at least three different sites each day. You will find a lot of info sticking if you do. If the question pool has incresed, or changed, I suspect the majority of questions would still apply for the test. The different areas of study will not have changed and the existing questions will be supplemented not dumped in my opinion.

HERE (http://www.ncvec.org/downloads/2006tech.pdf) is the new question pool (.pdf file), effective July 1, 2006 and good until June 30, 2010.

BX is probably right. But I haven't compared them myself, so if anyone knows what the differences are supposed to be, feel free to post up. You can compare with the old one if you want to - here (http://www.ncvec.org/page.php?id=338) is the page with the links to the files. The Technician class pools are "Element 2". From the wording provided, I get the feeling the pool was just updated to reflect changes in FCC rules, and to get rid of errors or ommissions.

The difference is the number of questions and no "illustrations"

Mark, lets go together and take the test. Chris can drive and take us for :eatchicke and  and :friday: afterwards :p

As a side note, reading the ARRL Tech Exam manual allowed me to take all 12 of the practice exams on QRZ (http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl) in under 7 minutes each, with an average score of 90%. That's pretty much a 100% guarenteed passing rate the first time!

BT - dinner isn't required, how about a  at the Brew Pub? We need to get the Prescott crew together some evening!

Yup, missed one :( The examiners wouldn't tell me which one tho - I was very curious to find out what I screwed up on. Between the ARRL Tech Exam manual and QRZ, it was pretty easy. I read the book cover to cover, answered the question pool in the manual, and then took the practice exams on QRZ in sequence 3 times. Four times thru the multiple question pool did the trick.

So, if anyone wants to pass the exam, please borrow the book! It's over $30.00 if you purchase one - get it here for the cost of shipping!

While I've been waiting for the testing date, I've had the chance to learn about the Yaesu FT2800. I've got the ARA repeaters, (http://www.w7ara.org/Web/), and a few other local repeaters setup in the radio. The ARA has several repeaters w/ open autopatch capability, along with a linked repeater (Mt. Elden to Mt Ord) that services a huge chunk of AZ.

We'll be in Phx on the 30th of Sept, (we're heading down to a D'Back's game) if you want it dropped off, or I can ship it to you.

Here's a listing of the next exams:

I could use the question pool .pdf as a study guide correct?
It has the qeustions, and the correct answer noted.

The questions on the official test come from this pool??

If you don't want to read the ARRL guide, your best bet is:

http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl

I read thru the guide, then did the tests in order on QRZ probably a dozen times before taking the exam.

The one thing I'll say for reading the book is that you will actually learn what the questions relate to vs. memorizing answers.

Yeah, dude- just keep it until you pass. The next test in Tucson is 8/2. I'm going to give that one a shot. I can pass the QRZ tests easily and consistently, but I just feel like I'm regurgitating the answers instead of learning why they're right. That's why I wanted to take a look at the book.

I've been reading the manual as well as practicing the online test at QRZ, I've been getting around 74%-90% on the first few practice tests but there seems to be many different question sheets. Do I need to make sure I pass all the different test sheets before trying out for the exam?

Another question - am I correct in assuming that an ARRL manual that was issued in 2003 is probably okay to study from for a test now? I can't imagine that too much has changed (at least as far as the material on the test) in the last 5 years.
