As of 5:30 this evening the Clan can proudly lay claim to yet another outstanding hunter; Christopher! Chris is the son of jim65wagon (James) and Elizabeth, and my favorite nephew in the whole world. He came up today to go hunting for the deer during the PA junior season, his first crack at hunting big game. My dad guided him on this hunt and Chris came through like a pro taking an 18 month old doe with one well placed shot. According to Chris it dropped like a train fell on it. My dad has really pleased with the skill Chris showed and tickled pink by Chris' show of enthusiasm. Chris on the other hand was the happiest I have ever seen a hunter. Me and my dad showed him how to skin and to properly take care of his kill. Tomorrow chris gets a crash course in butchering. Clan rule: you kill it you clean it! Now he can take his harvest back home to Virginia and rag his dad about putting the meat on the table! Chris was using a Remington Model 7 Youth in the 7mm-08 calibre with a 140 grain core-lok. Awesome gun for a new hunter and a great round for anyone, this round is impressive. What a great night for the Clan, we sure are proud of our newest hunter, Christopher! Way to go Chris!!! :steak:

Here's a couple of pics, sorry they are attachments but photobucket wasn't cooperating tonight.

No problem. As you could tell everyone was excited for Chris and he's having a great time. Tomorrow, Chris and Papa are going to drop a few squirrels for the kettle, Yum! I think I'll have to eat the tenderlions for you since they should be eaten as fresh as possible and it just wouldn't do to freeze them for your enjoyment. It's the least we can do for you. Oh yeah, We "need" to cook the heart so Chris can try heart sandwichs. Me and Allison will have to partake also to ensure the quality of said sandwichs.

Congratulations. He must be thrilled.
Great gun and a great round too. I bought a Model Seven in .243 back in '84. Still have and use it.

Great job. Where I grew up you had to be 18 to hunt deer. I shot my first and only back in 2000, 12 point whitetail about 250lbs. Wish I could have hunted with my dad back when I was 12.

A great new program here in PA that started a couple of years ago is the Mentoring program where any kid that is able can go hunting with an adult to guide them. They don't need a liscense themselves, but must use the tag of the adult hunter accompanying them. They can't carry the gun themselves and must be in direct supervision of their "guide" at all times. My boy Cam, now 10, will be coming along with me when season starts and will try to take a deer using my doe tag. He's a great shot so it should go well.

It's great to have Chris up, and he's real excited to be hunting. Down in VA where they live there's little opportunity for target shooting and not much public land to hunt on. When him and his sister, Madeline, are up we always have to break out the 22s and do alot of plinging. Madeline is a dead eye, and I really feel could be the competive shooter of the bunch. Chris told me it was great to take part in his family's traditions and he can't wait to do it again. Jim and Beth have got one great kid there!

Um, yeah, about those tenderloins. I think I can suffer through with the frozen version....

Oh, and he's had heart, just never knew what he was eating!

At least save something for the trip down, I'll even settle for a couple of raggedy ol squirrels to throw in a pot pie...
