Hello all,

I thought it was only appropriate to change my screen name since I dont have a blue 4runner anymore, I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery. It is Kent green with solid axles and coils at each corner.

So far I have installed a 2in. RTE lift with OME shocks and new tires.

Mods to come:
-CDL kit
-RTE slimline front bumper
-RTE rear Bumper
-RTE sill guards
-Hannibal or safety devices rack
-Optima dual battery mod
-RTE weld on diff guards
-Safari Snorkel/Axle breathers
-Engle fridge
- ...

Louis,

I really like the color of the Disco with the black wheels. Very sweet.

On your other mods, I would highly recommend the CDL as one of the first changes. That was one of the first modifications done to my Disco II (2001).

Great idea on the bumpers too. My front and rear bumpers saw many scrapes even with the 265's and 2" OME kit.

Cant wait to follow the build! :lurk:

HAHA, thanks Mark!

How is the 4runner treating you?

Scott, the tires are 275x65 and they are so quiet.

The cdl mod will be next for sure, I will probably mouth the linkage through the center console so i dont have to get out and I wont have to worry about the actuator or wires getting torn due to the elements.

Good idea.

I have also heard of the 2004 Shifters with cable being successful too.

Having seen a few actuators fail to engage, the mechanical arrangement would be best IMHO.

Yeah, just to many chances for something to go wrong with the electrical ones so I cancelled them out, and the the 04' I hear is pretty much a direct drop in so I will do a bit more research and those will be my options.

The 04' will definatley keep the stock look but so much of this vehicle will change from stock form (tastefully) that I don't think it will really matter.

I was a firefighter USAF, in Mtn. Home, ID. Joining the USAF is a decision I have never regretted.

I think we might me able to put together a little run soon. I need to go to Tucson in the next few weeks.

Louis...beautiful Rover! I also love the color.

I really have a thing for Rovers lately. Just yesterday i stopped at a lot that had an 04 HSE 46K miles with ARB/winch, roofrack full of Hella's and alot of other nice gear. The salesman said he JUST sold it to a gent in VA on Ebay.

I'v been shopping for a Grand Cherokee for the wife, i may have to get her into a Rover. ;) :p

FourByLand
08-07-2006, 04:20 AM
Thanks John,

If it's for your wife I would imagine she might like the grand cherokee better as alot of people can't get used to the school bus feel, I personally love it and the curve of the steering wheel is perfect.

I would definatley recommend doing some research on them and maybe even talking to a few mechanics before making your final decision.

Scott, How long where you enlisted, also that would be pretty cool if something worked out and we could do a run!

I have benefitted tremendously from serving in the AF and don't regret it at all, but at the same time I am ready to embark on a new adventure and watch sunsets fall on new horizons!

Scott, How long where you enlisted, also that would be pretty cool if something worked out and we could do a run!

4 Years, with 6 months in Italy. GI Bill, VA Load and my degrees paid for. I loved being a fireman (my grandfather and father was) too.

Consider the run a go. I will post details in the next few days.

Regarding the GC vs. LR. Both are great machines. For what it is worth, Stephanie LOVED our 2001 DII. She often reminds me of that too. :littlefriend: So it is quite likely one will be in our future at some point...

LOL, we have a 1999 GC with 75k and it has been babied, I am ready to turn it into a trail machine and Lindsay wants a mini cooper, or something super good on gas (tdi vw). She doesnt mind the Disco but it feels like a school bus to her and the H3 was awkward for her as well.

The Disco is a great rig but def. not for everyone.

Excellent, we are itching to get out, will be nice to met some of you guys!

Brian, I used to be bluerunner and I thought I should change names to go with the new truck, thanks for the welcomes though!

I have always like the Portal because people are friendly and helpful unlike some oth the other boards but it sucks because the Land Rover forum doesnt get much action so I want to change that... but i'm gonna need your help!

Have you done anything to your truck? Do you have a mod thread? I am waiting for Scott to post details on a trip so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

--4Lo, WOW, those are some really sweet cruisers, it looks to me he has a D1 which was made until 99 and less refined but a very capable rig, also came standard with the cdl, so it was ready to go!

HAHA, sad to here there's a sad story to go along with it, but would enjoy the social side of it nonetheless!

That shackle mount is one I have only seen on Safarigaurd bumpers, imho this would be a better solution.

Those are hoist rings. I used to have a link to the ones that SG gets, but can't find it right now. But do a search on hoist rings and you'll find plenty of options. Samples are:

Thanks!
I do have storage in the rear - I have the SE7 model but I have removed the two rear jump seats. I then built an elevated false floor and have two plastic boxes that fit underneath. I can store tools, recovery gear and the like inthe boxes and then still give Oliver the dog a place to hang out:elkgrin:
There is a pic of it around here somewhere from the original rear storage thread, I'll look for it.

The sliders are custom, stainless steel, made by the previous owner. They work well and will hold the weight of the truck.

I've got the OME HD springs on the front and 2-3", can't remember, spacers under the SLS airbags in the rear for an overall lift between 2-3 inches. I need to measure again to see exactly what it is.

16" rims with 265/75/R16 Yokohama Geolander AT+II tires

I'll send you a pm on the rims...

Louis, I really dig the new LR. It looks so cool with the blacked out wheels, the paint color and those tinted windows. Is it my imagination, or is this Kent green a rare color to see in these parts? Anyway, super cool rig and I hope to meet up with you for a trip sometime soon since I am in AZ too.

Thanks Louis & Graham for the links to recovery points.

The SG Hoist Rings are only rated to 5000lbs? That sounds scary for a recovery point, double line pull can easily be over twice that... what am I missing?
I found the ones Louis referenced at expeditionexchange.com plus the ones Desertdude has on the front of his ARB bumper w/ backing plates... sounds much safer.

Sorry for the thread hijack on this- hehe. Back to the buildup!

Louis,
How about mounting a solenoid on the CDL shaft? That way you can just feed a wire to a dash switch and forego the drilling and booty-fab linkage...

I am sure a good solenoid will be just as reliable for this application as the mechanical linkage (very clever writeup on discoweb, btw! nice link-). just an idea

FourByLand
08-10-2006, 09:02 PM
I guess I like this idea better is because there are no electrical connections to rely on and if I put a nice knob on there it will look alot cleaner and it's not going to be a show truck, myself and a few other will see the inside.

I guess I have just heard of them going out and didn't feel like I could really go wrong with some extensions, nuts and bolts.

The plans fell through and I ended up going out to Chiva Falls and relaxing in the water.

I am amazed at how well the traction control handle what I threw at it. A little wheel spin and a slight turn of the wheel and it walked right up everything.

The cdl is still in the plans but it was nice to see how things went without it.

Scott Brady

You will really enjoy the traction once the CDL is on. It makes a huge difference, and allows the true capabilities of the Disco II to shine.

I have worked at getting over some obstacles with a bit of amazement to be further astounded when I looked down to see that I had forgotten to engage the CDL! Very capable without and even more capable with CDL.

I have to say, that's a very nice looking Disco i love the colour, i wanted that colour myself but couldn't find one:mad:

One question about the front bumpers you guys have there, do you have any SRS airbag laws there, here the front bumpers have to meet ADR (Australian Design Rules) requirements, they have to be airbag compatable.

Baz.

Thanks Baz~

I love the color as well. The bumper is mounted with no crush cans, gave me great approach angles and is very stout.

4) Are all vehicle classes required to meet the Federal bumper standard?

No. The Federal bumper standard does not apply to vehicles other than passenger cars (i.e., sport utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, or pickups trucks). The agency has chosen not to regulate bumper performance or elevation for these vehicle classes because of the potential compromise to the vehicle utility in operating on loading ramps and off road situations.

Hopes this answers your question.

Louis,
Great looking Disco! I am new to the list, but old to Rovers. Your first post said that you may want a roof rack and you mentioned the Hannibal. If I may suggest going with the Safety Devices if you want one. The SD has more ‘feet’ and spreads the load more efficiently. The Disco roof racks mound to the drip gutter. The Hannibal rack only has three 'feet' on each side and holds the rack higher than the SD does. I have had the SD from the dealer, the SD 'Camel Trophy' edition and used Wilderness by Garvin. The Garvin rack is constructed in a similar fashion to the Hannibal in that it has long 'feet' that hold the basket above the roof rails. That extra distance gives the weight of the basket more leverage and will eventually wear the gutter into breaking. God forbid you smack a tree or large rock with the roof rack... Anyhow...my .02
My spot on Discoweb is http://www.discoweb.org/hermanwilliams/index.htm

FourByLand
10-23-2006, 02:59 PM
Welcome!!!

I really appreciate your input! But I have seen the damage that the Safety Devices "feet" put on the gutter and I guess I would rather have the support from the Hannibal that runs along the gutter distributing the load, it doesnt look at home on the Disco like the SD rack but I guess that will be ok.

:ylsmoke:

10-24-2006, 02:14 PM
Oooooooo! I see what you mean. I had never noticed that on the Hannibal. That is a much better design and looks like a better design than what I was talking about. The Wilderness by Garvin that I had just had the 'feet' and no rail that went into the whole gutter.
Well, build a better mouse trap...
Happy Rovering and thanks for the info!

What made you decide to do it from the top rather than go in from the bottom? Just wondering, that's all. Looks like you did a great job. What did you use to put it all back together?

Thanks Steven, I went in from the top because everything was within reach from that point, I used all of the parts That came with it except for the bracket to the Hi-Lo selector I had to drop down to a 6mm bolt with locking nut, bolted it all up made a few adjustments and she was ready to go.

Nice Disco Louis

Looking at the photos of the CDL did you fit the arrangement designed for the DII or did you use the DI arrangement?

I can recommend fitting a rear ARB air locker, along with the CDL it has made a huge difference to how my vehicle performs on sand and gives me a mazing control when tackling steep rocky gravelly trails in the Oman mountains

my rear bumper should be up in a about 3 weeks.

My friend had been in Germany on a family death. Now the he is back he's been working on other large rockcrawler projects that were on order before my bumper.

the good news is that the bumper is of a slimline design and will be very rugged.

I'm just wonder to have it powdercoated or apply rustoleum flat black paint.

Front bumper is going to be a while. Just bought a RTE lift so took the money. However I going to wait out for a RTE bumper.

although I have been tempting to get a ARB and modify it.

Back in the 1st post you mention doing dual batteries. I will represent the dissenting opinion on this. Everyone I know with dual batteries ends up with issues. Just drop in a D31M Blue top. It fits in the tray, has huge reserve and has never failed me. I have one in my '04 for the past 3 years through lots of winching, running from 100 degrees to -25, sea level to 14,000 feet and keeping my Engel 45 on all summer.

That's where I'm at! Not too sure who the grey haired guy is. The only fixed up trucks out here are Mike Hallmark's Epsom green kitted Disco I w/ rack, mine, Rudy Barrow's kitted black DII w/ rack, Randy Banis' fully kitted D90, and a stock G4Challenge DII running around. Well it is gated but the main gate stays open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for deliveries and such so if it was before then you might have been able to catch a glimpse of Sprout. I actually live right on the corner in so I'm always parked closest to the exit.

There is a white D1 with a mild lift and a rack that belongs to one of the guys that works at the Sears Auto Center by the mall, and a lifted w/ big tire RR Classic SWB I've seen a couple times.

Weird huh? We live in a small enough town that I end up seeing and meeting the other like minded Rover enthusiasts.

Louis,
The Disco is looking good. Get up here to Northern AZ and we'll do some runs in Sedona/Jerome area.

I see that you are in the Air Force. I assume that you are using the auto hobby shop on base? I think that is the biggest benefit that I miss from the Navy. We had an awesome shop with inside bays, outdoor "shades", long term project areas, and a great paint booth. You could use the shop and tools for a couple bucks an hour. I have honestly thought of starting my own do it yourself business based on the military auto hobby shop principle. I just have to win the powerball first. I don't think it would make enough to be liquid.

The unfortunate S.O.B. that needed to be yanked was me (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=145804&postcount=32). Gravity and very loose soil gave me a crash course lesson in physics that I'd soon like to forget. No winching would have resulted in peril for my truck making me the owner of the largest crushed aluminum recyclable in my area.

I went out to TruckHaven a couple of years ago in the late spring. I had an issue with my VSS on the way down and had to leave my truck at the Indian Casino and hop a ride with a buddy. I have not been back since.

Mine are from Rovers North (http://roversnorth.com/store/pc-3238-34-differential-guard-discovery-i-defender-90-110-range-rover-classic.aspx), which I had powder coated black because they come galvanized. They were given to me, had I gone out and bought a set I'd probably do the weld on RTE.

Thanks! In the four plus years I've abused the QT's no. The thirds are held on with ten bolts which lead me to believe that the housings were hit extremely hard and in a spot that would have to be perfect for that to happen. As you can see from my pics the bulk of the scratching is in the front to the center of the front guard which has less than half an inch of clearance to the round part of the diff.

I agree but it is a better slider than a complete guard (for the pinion). Enough of the rear DS flange is covered for it not to be an issue. As you can see from the pictures there aren't any marks or scratches on the U-joint so the circumstances would again have to be perfect for the a rock to do any damage. An extra plate could be added to protect the pinion if your needs see fit. Overall, IMO the QT's offer the best all-around protection.

For the ultimate in protection one could always opt for sewer caps and QT's.

I've run a few trails, but I definitely haven't wheeled my vehicle hard.

I wouldn't change a thing about the Greg Davis bumper. It is one of the few pieces of gear that I have that I have absolutely no complaints about. Improved departure angle, solid quarter panel sliders, receiver is raised up over the factory reciever, etc. I purchased a Scorpion Racing fuel tank skid plate to go with it. I like it over the Rovertym fuel tank skid because it tucks up higher.

The CB mount sure, the antenna mount not-so-much. I have to pull a bit of the interior out for that. Plus the wiring runs from the front of my truck, in the interior tube of the mount, behind the panels, under the carpeting, and through the factory rear door loom. So Friday morning I showed up to work about an hour and a half late and packed around the bumper and through out the day and in between work and what not I trimmed quarter panels, welded the sliders on added a quick coat of paint put my tools away amd out of nowhere the boss said "get outta here, we will clean up on Monday" well he didn't have to tell me twice. Thanks J!

Have you had a chance to try out your new tires? Think you will have to trim the corners of your fenders at all?

Lookin' good!

What required welding? Mine required trimming, but was otherwise a bolt on. Has the design changed?

Thanks Craig!

He is shipping them with the sliders unattached for cost purposes and then you weld them up, it was fairly easy... I did a rush job because I was trying to make the trip so last night I basically reinstalled the bumper all over again.

Very happy with my decision!

I haven't yet. I have to get longer shocks and spring retainers. Also my rear bumper has to be redone other wise my tires will wear fast.

yep I'll have to trim too!:victory:

Hey,

Long time no hear from.

ok I think that's the section between Geologist Cabin and the Racetrack? yes a nice area!

we did a new area this year, ... Defense Mine- the last page of pics from here
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13579

... it is a really fun trail tho (an expo LR flopped on it's side here-there was a thread about it) and despite that flop, it is not a dangerous trail. That flop was a fluke I think.
I think it's worth investigating in the future. Your truck is plenty equipped for it and it's a lot of fun. i'm looking fwd to going back there

rick(red truck) and alvaro (white truck) on the same page of pics did it much easier. rick had the magic eye and just scampered up the climb- i wasn't so lucky, it took a bit longer....but finally made it under my own pwer thanks to good spotting and some helpful rocks!

coincdentally, the LR rolled just to the right of the photo. The climb is an optional.

i guess it's getting too hot now but we go every spring. i'll def. remember to keep you updated.

back to your buildup!:Mechanic: :coffeedrink:
