View Full Version : Aux water or fuel tank?

I am planning on putting an auxilliary tank underneath my 80 series. It is either going to be water or fuel. If fuel, I don't plan at this time to plumb in a dual filler neck to to time complexity and neck availability.
I can very reasonably do a water tank which I think I'd like, but I've read too much here in practice on-board water like this is a point of curse on longer trips.
My best world would be a factory aux fuel tank with a small water tank underneath, but I simply can't find a way to source said fuel tank.
So: since I actually have the space and can very cost effectively put a water tank underneath, is it still worth my while to do fuel?

Scott, I've got on board water and have loved it. On our 9 month trip it gave us no problems whatsoever. If you need to carry water it is a good way to do it IMO, but always take a water jerry for filling.

Lucky 100 series owners now have the option of one tank that holds both! :D

As mentioned above, the 100 series have just that setup available (from OOT4WD in OZ) but the 80's do not! :confused: IMHO the factory 12-14 gallon subtank is A LOT of work to source, and install for such small gains, that is of course, just my opinion!

OH YEAH!!! My 850-900 mile range between fillups is quite nice! Check my writeup for all the steps on installing the 44 Gallon Long Ranger unit. It is quite big and a time intensive mod, but it is quite simple to install and worth every hour i spent on it! :D But it does tuck up higher then the stock spare did!!!

I don't use a tow hitch on my 80, does the tank sit significantly further down and prone to rock/ledge abuse?

No, as mentioned, it tucks up HIGHER then the stock spare.
Here is a pic
(keep in mind, this is with the bumper ends removed) with the Kaymar bumper installed the side and such actually act as a skidplate for the tank, Robb could shed some light on this cool feature

So, are your really getting 20 miles per gallon with a Land Cruiser 100 ? :eek: :confused:

No, i have an 80
25 Gallon Stock Tank
44 Gallon Aux Tank
-----
69 Gallon Fuel Capacity
Average 12-13mpg
69x12 = 828 Miles
69x13 = 897 Miles

I would personally go for the auxillary fuel tank. Although, like Kevin said it is a bit of work and time involved. Once installed you are more limited to your bladder than anything else. :rolleyes:
My goal is to put a water tank inside my 80 where the second row seats live. But, that is still sometime away.

You can see in the second pic how the rails on the Kaymar bumper actually provide a bit of protection for any type of slide off.
And to those who say that they are worried about the departure angle and other clearance issues. I am pretty sure Robbie at Slee had or has the bigger aux. tank and has gone many places.

I'm still really hoping I can find the OEM subtank, not for any clearance issues, just so I can a) still carry a spare as I sometimes do and b) also thinking about putting either air tank or winch back there too.

Just keep in mind, it is A LOT of work for small gain, it is a fairly time intensive mod. When its all said and done you will probably be within $200-300+/- of the big daddy. The prices of those OEM Subtanks has SKYROCKETED in the last few years!
Good points though about keeping the spare though!
