2003 TRD Rear Diff. Not Locking in??

hey there.

I have a 2003 tacoma double cab TRD with 100,000 miles. The Rear Differential will not lock, (the light continues to flash but never goes solid)

I've left it on for an extended amount of time, (should only take a few seconds) + tried forward to reverse, 4x4 hi - low, etc. Nothing seems to get this thing to work.

Any advice on this?

If you've been wheeling it you may have hit a rock or something... you might want to crawl under the truck and make sure there's no damage to the actuator. Also could be electrical, possibly in the switch. Keep us posted.

If it is 100k+ you're on your own, but if it is 99,999 miles it should be drive train warranty coverable. Get to your dealer.

Here are a few recent posts regarding the same issue...two different problems tho.

Flyingwil had the wires torn out:

Ursidae69 had to have his replaced by the dealer: (see post #147) and on.

Also, I concur with RoundOut, you should probably take it to a dealer if you are under warranty. Otherwise you might have to diagnose the problem yourself and pick up a used locker.

The truck is not new to me. Nothing has changed, (no recent aggressive 4x4ing, etc). I haven't actived the locker for over a year, and never used it outside of the occassional steep driveway climb in the winter, (I live in Lake Tahoe, Ca.) + a few sessions around Gold Lake, Ca.

I'm going to check out the wiring system as someone above reccomended + inspect for any other visual damage later today.

Should only work in low range unless you have done the "gray wire" mod. If you have you may want to check the ground connection.

LOL...brilliant! So often I forget that most of us have done the gray wire mod....a simple thing to overlook for the solution.

When you went forward/reverse, did you turn the wheel at all? It helps if you do kind of a zig-zag pattern when you're driving forward and back. Not all the way to lock, but just at a slight arc.

Also, if you have gone through water previously and then let the actuator sit, the bushings and gears can rust up on the inside. If you are very savvy you could easily refurbish the actuator if the ground is not an issue.
