View Full Version : Hummer, End of an Era
Just thought I would post up some of my better photographs of my Hummer Experience now that the H1 is no longer in production.

Myself, Dave, and Clarke - Doug (Lynch Hummer) Driving. Amazing what you can do with one of these trucks when it is not yours. Doug posed for the photograph and then drove thru.

I just hope they keep making humvees so I can get parts! Nice pictures -- that shot of the sma slantback coming down the reaper has always been a favorite of mine.

Thanks for posting - love that "Baja 1000 camp spot" photo. Being in Southern California have you ever dropped by American Hummer? Terry and Lynn have become friends of the family. Outside of my brother and myself they're the only ones who've had a wrench on my brothers H1. I've spent a lot of time in the back alley of Terry's shop fixing my Rover on the way south or back north. There is only so much you can do in a mall parking lot and I know Terry will entertain my wife until 3 o'clock in the morning while I work.
The H1 will be missed. The list of suitable long distance rough terrain load haulers is getting shorter all the time. Thanks again for the photos..

Hi Henry -- I checked out your site and it's the same one I happened accross a few years back. I love the idea of removing the seats and sleeping accross the rear tunnel. Lots of other really cool mods on the hummer. Nice trucks.
I've never been able to meet Lynn and Terry in person, but spent time on the phone and ordered lots of stuff from them. Wish we were closer -- good hummer mechanics are hard to come by. I'm still learning.

.....Mauve sand is...............KEWL........!:friday:
Yes, I have been to American Hummer. Great people. Lynn spent a good hour on the phone with me about a month ago regarding a couple of 2 door Hummers I was looking at purchasing. Unfortunalty, after the long talk and a look at one of the trucks I decided to pass on the purchase. There use to be a group of guys called the outlawhummer. They had some great backcountry setups. Most of them were built up by American I think. I keep trying to go to that website(www.outlawhummers.com) but it looks to be down and out. I sure miss the Hummer(H1) group. It really was a scream to go to the events.

Clarkes Hummer sure is nice to look at. Everytime I see it I am expecting the UPS man to jump out and give me a package.

I think Clark is (or has by now) completely rebuilt his truck with a new engine (might be a cummings?). I almost bought a spare t-case from him, but I need new tires first. Met him in Galmis last year...his truck is really nice (they only made 39 slantbacks for civilian sales).

since this is the appropriate thread...here are the production numbers by year. It's interesting how few there really are, especially compared to the H2's and H3's being pumped out at 40,000 to 60,000 units per year.

interesting that none were produced in 05. Maybe because of the war demand?
H1's are cool machines. It is a bummer to see these great trucks go away.

I think in '05 they were re-tooling for the Alpha model with the duramax/allison combo. One on the reasons they were available in the first place was to keep the factory open when we weren't "getting our war on". They've been so busy cranking them out for the past few years, the civi models definately took a back seat. The war, changing diesel standards, more stringent DOT standards, and the sky-high price set by GM killed it. I miss the basic models of the first few years of production ('92 -'94). They're about as close to humvee as you can get -- lighter wieght, 4300 lb payload, no computer, and priced in the mid $40's. Sweet!
I need to get out to one of the events and show y'all what a chrome-less dirty hummer looks like.

Look at those numbers. I like the 691 2006 Alpha's. Looks like there maybe a little light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe I can pick one up in a couple of years when the price drops to about 75K. Thanks for the input.

Check out this very early sales video -- I'm guessing it's from the mid 90's. I'd never seen it before. There's some cool wheeling and interesting info in it. Remember none of the hummers in the video have lockers, it's all old school btm. They are right off the showroom floor.

This was my 98 wagon going thru Box Canyon, AZ. Looking back this was the best looking setup I did with the 2 piece black rims and the 38" Super Swampers. Too bad they only lasted about 7,000 miles before I could know longer stand the ride quality.
Here are a couple of more shots of my Hummer that I like.

great pictures...I've come accross pictures your truck before I even owned one.
I used swamper tsl-sx's until recently -- one of them literally desintigrated on the freeway (5000 miles and one year old). I pick up my irok radials from the tire shop manana. I know I'll miss the gnarly sidewalls and the extra inch!

AM General is still making light tactical vehicles (including the H1) for the armed forces. Parts wont be an issue I don't think, just expensive as usual.
I thought the H1 was a neat niche vehicle, just alot of money for what you got. It's also a little limited depending on the terrain. Out in the desert and in wide open places, it's great, lots of capability. Come out to the NW and I hope you brought the saw cause it's size is gonna really hamper it on alot of tight trails. Great for an armed vehicle, but I wish the millitary still had a Jeep sized rig. On a funny side note alot of my buddies in the Fire Acadamey were in Afghanistan and they all tell me great stories about stealing all the tallibans Toyota HJ-70's not only cause the fit in better and don't get shot at as much, but because they all hated the H1's GM diesel motors
The rest of the Hummer line is just useless and easily outdone by alot of other rigs. Personaly I'm kinda glad the H1 is going back to Mill only cause it distanced itslef form the other clown shoes "cars" that it was getting mixed up in. Screw GM, worst car company ever.
Thanks for the pics. People here in Toronto just give me a blank look when I explain that we have a "Hummer" dealer that doesn't even sell Hummers. Ironically I was told that the Hummer was already discontinued here before the dealer was even built!

No, I sold it and purchased my present Jeep. I had my 98 Hummer for 4 years. I was out of warranty and my first son was about to be born. It was time for a new project. Now I wish I had kept it. Although it was costing me quite a bit each year to maintain it the way I liked. Here are some more photographs. Brings back great memories.

beauty pictures :D! those rigs are much more capable than much of the offroad community seems to give them credit for, aside from acknowledging them as hard to roll. looks like you guys have definitely used them as intended...i dig the reaper shot, few vehicles could do that...period. certainly even fewer stock or near-stock vehicles.
now and then, it's possible to pick up a mil surplus hmmwv for 30-40k. we had one at a previous employer with the hutch on the back, stamped "military vehicle dot exempt" and a bunch of other stuff...purchase price at 35k+change, and with a price like that it's definately easier to start the mods. didn't move too quick tho...needed a tuneup and some love in general. i always wished i could have bought it (the hmmwv, not the hutch etc) off the company...they really needed something else, but wanted the truck for trade shows and impressing suits. i think post military the only good times it saw were the times i and another employee (she and her husband owned a 12v civ version of the same truck) took the "back roads" on various errands...probably better the boss never found out from either of us where that truck had been, what with his c4i setup in the back :D.
one of my favorite moments with that truck centered around the hummer dealership off i-70 in west denver...they also sell caddies and jeeps, but the majority of hummers i've seen in the front range have been shiny and clean...just luxury vehicles, not really selling to an offroad market. their service floor is shiny, bright white tile...small tile...everyone wearing suits and no sign of anyone with grease on their hands. the vehicles on the service floor are always beautiful caddies, clean jeeps, and cleaner hummers...and up i drive in cargos and a tshirt, with a carc'd usmc surplus hmmwv in standard camo with a hutch and a grip full of aerials. i think the service manager pooped a little. 12k$ of other people's money later, they assured me they'd send a valet to retrieve my vehicle (better said with a dry tone and slight upward tilt of the nose :D). fifteen minutes later i'm still waiting, and ask the rather agitated service manager where on earth they parked my truck because i'm going to get it myself...he points, i think he was glad i was out of his hair, and i walk over to find a pair of confused, worried kids looking at the console and the key, trying to figure out how to turn it over. they thought the start lever and light box were pretty cool and told me about a close-by spot to get it dirty...a couple hours later and i was headed back towards boulder...driving that truck through the democratic people's republic of boulder, i thought i was gonna get pelted with organic tomatos :D. whew :p.
too bad theyre usually soooo expensive :(. i've only seen one in the dirt in person, dunno if it was surplus, but it was a slantback.
