I don't live in Arizona on a full time basis.....although I do own a sweet condo near Old Town Scottsdale, so AZ is very dear to my heart!

I just had a quick flash.....so I thought I would just throw it out there. It's not for me to decide of course...but fun never the less for everyone here to think about......and may generate a good chat.

Since our love for the outback runs very deep.....and most here would jump at a chance to get out on the trail.....why not incorporate some great community service?.....and put a Positive Spin back into the world of 4x4.

Scott.....How about a group of Arizona outback lovers from your site get together and form the "Expedition Portals~Search and Rescue Team".

Your First "pluck" out of the outback would probably gain national attention! .....and a MAJOR WIN for the offroad community!!! Remember the lost kid in Utah recently that was hiding from his rescuers?....It was all over the news!

You have the vehicles.....equipment/GPS...climbing...etc.......fantastic knowlege of the area.......Ham Radios.....etc....etc...etc.....general know how not to get lost and gut instinct!

Maybe a good campfire discussion in November? :camping:

I am not sure how feasable it would be, I think that is something that Scott would have to answer. I like the idea and would be up for training for it if it were to become a reality. :rappel: :D

In AZ isn't there a group of Cowboys that do search and rescue on horseback? I think they are called the possy or something similar. My uncle has a picture of them all gathering up for a search one misty morning.

Obviously only Scott can answer you directly....but one of the logistical problems you would encounter is having people that can simply walk away from whatever they are doing in order to mount a search/rescue operation. If you have a group of 500 people in one local area, there would likely be no problem getting 8 or 10 people that can get away from work or whatever to spend a few days in this noble effort. But with such a small group that is so spread out, it would be virtually impossible to get enough people together to mount a effective operation. It's not like we would have weeks or even days to plan for it, get time off of work, coordinate with other state/local groups involved, etc. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, it just would not be easy.

I do like the idea of putting a positive image out there. Search and rescue would definately do that, but strictly on the subject of putting out a positive image....bags of trash being removed from the wilderness, trail maintenance/repair, spreading the word of Tread Lightly!, etc., all do a nice job of that.

I think it is worth consideration, but more importantly, I would like to see us as a group be able to help each other.

Not many who live in AZ were born here, so most of us don't have family that can come to the rescue. More importantly, my family could not make it to the places that I could be in trouble.

I would not want this to be a public list or anything, but as we spend more time together, and get more comfortable with each other capabilities, it would be a great idea to have a HELP team.

Just imagine if you get stuck in the snow, or your vehicle breaks down on a beach in Mexico. We would need to have rules, and ways of compensating the "rescuer" for gas, etc.

Lets shelve the idea until the Nov. run so we can talk about it more as a group.
