Edmunds has a page on the Grassroots Motorsports $2008 Challenge, an event where entrants can't spend more than $2008 on their vehicles -- and show the receipts to prove it!

The event has three parts: a concours, an autocross, and a drag race. Entrants included a Nova chassis under a VW body (which ran a 10.5 second quarter mile!), a Miata with a 4.0L Lexus V8, A Corolla chassis with a Honda Magna V4 motorcycle engine, a Plymouth Colt (think early Mitsubishi Mirage) running enough nitrous to cover the 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds, and many other strange and wonderful machines.

Yeah, they do that every year...and of course the allowance increases by $1 each year, to.

I really enjoyed the $2004 challenge issue. My dad got me a 3 year subscription to GRM for Xmas!

The car forum I help run (mirageforums.net - About Mitsubishi Mirages) very seriously considered building a 93-96 Mirage coupe to run next year. It sort of fell apart, and then come to find out, the guy who placed like 3rd or 4th last year was driving a 93 Mirage sedan.

It's definitely cool to stumble onto build threads for the challenge, some NEAT junk out there.

GRM is great, I've had a subscription since 01, by far the best auto mag out there.
