View Full Version : Smugglers Cave Area Exploration and Camping! October 14th-15th! Interest??

Hey Guys

I am itching to get back out and do some more exploring in that area that we just scratched the surface on awhile ago.

Brian, Mark and I found an awesome place to camp that could comfortably accomodate a decent amount of rigs.

Thinking of trying to get a group (would like to limit it to EP folks) together for a little exploring/overnight trip in that area. Weather should be really nice by then!

Meet Saturday AM, Explore all day, and depart Sunday afternoon with possible early AM exploring!

Thoughts??

Interest?

:campfire: :chowtime: :camping: :truck: :clapsmile

FYI, its about 1-1.5 hours east of San Diego.

Weekend before or after? Dates are still tentative

howdy...I'd be interested...at this point though, the previous weekend is not good. Also, how about calling/turning this into a Southern Cal Smugglers Cave get-together (not trying to hijack your plans). I've thought for some time that it would be cool for the EP folk from southern Cal to meet-up. (I'm east of LA)

OK, the 14th-15th!!

Anyone else?

I'm very likely to make it that weekend:campfire:

How about a hike up Table Top?

And if we stay at that same campsite, how about a little clean-up?

And the following weekend is the Expedition Trophy (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1109) no? I know the details for that are still up in the air but since I missed it last year I was really going to try and make it this year...

Oh Great Bryan!

Well at least it's quite a relief to know that the "SWR" is not the only problem child in our community!

Go rent an H3 and then do a write up for us!.....hehe:smiley_drive:

I'm still ...IN

The "SWR" is running SWEET!

So......

Kevin.....are you giving up on this trip?

Vince........I am still a go for this trip. I will be glad to show you the way. You are even welcome to do a rest stop at my place in Poway before we head out. Then we take the Hwy. 67 down to the I-8 East. We will top off our tanks at the Acorn Casino along the way.

I was looking forward to showing you all the old....original 1860's+ wagon trail to San Diego! It's a riot! We will have views to the Salton Sea and as far as Yuma if it's a really clear day!

I'm still goin'.............!

want to plan to meet at the same Carls Jr. on the Tavern Road exit in Alpine?

Scenic WonderRunner
10-03-2006, 01:16 AM
Kewl Kevin!Yes overnight.........And I could do two overnights and show Vince and anyone else, some of the Anza~Borrego.......maybe even take them up to the Diablo Drop Off....and head out Fish Creek, for the second night.Um Kevin.........Didn't your post above just include dbl spaced lines?I'm confused.I suppose you could always put me on ignore. Carl's Jr. is fine............I will be topping off my tank at the Acorn Casino which is the last decent price for gas. This could be an alternate meet up spot......now just try and easily read that!............LOL

Thanks, yeah, i have been looking/researching for months. There are tons of options out there for your wants/needs. Check out www.thumpertalk.com when you get serious, guys over their are awesome!

The most popular (with the people and magazines) bike right now is the Suzuki DRZ400, 100% street legal, decent power, very affordable and everyone is raving about how bulletproof the engine is.

The DRZ was next on my list but for my 6'3" frame i felt too cramped on it.

The XR650L is also air cooled (one of the few dual sports that is) and that appealed to me because of the simpliciy and ease of maintenence. I live by the "less stuff to go wrong the better" motto!

Another reason i went with the XR over the DRZ was the aftermarket support and plentifulness of parts (both in the US and down south). The XR has been around for decades and have a huge following! There are several aftermarket companies all around that are dedicate specifically to the XR's and XL's! Check out this site/candystore: http://www.xrsonly.com/

Also, the 650 is one of the more popular bikes that people ride/race in Mexico so parts would also be plentiful south of the border as well!

Anyway, for what its worth, those are my reasons!

Both bikes have electric start as well!

The new 07 KTM's are supposed to be the holy grails of dual sporting. But they arent due out until Dec and will be abour 1-2K more then the XR or DRZ. Might be worth checking them out though!

Shop around and sit on EVERYTHING before you buy!

Good Luck!

Yes, especially when its allowed to breath with proper jetting, pipe and airbox restrictors removed! Also, the larger displacement makes for more tolerable longer range street riding as well! However, it is also pretty heavy too! Going to work on putting it on a diet as well!

I need to install and diff drop and my new left front CV axle before I do anymore trips. The front left CV is hurting badly.

Plus I'm busy fixing up the townhouse to sell, so time is short...

Basically, I don't see myself making that date:(

I hope you guys have a good time:)

Sorry Bryan.........I know how much you like to get out!

Now wait a minute!.....Have you not learned anything from this thread>?!!! Your Double Spaced post is going to get Kevin ALL upset.....and if this continues, I'll have to remember to tell Kevin not to camp by me if he's going to be all pissy!...........hehe

OK......just teasing!

The reason for THIS post is the following.......and Warning~it may be dbl and triple spaced for ease of readership!

I AM going on this trip.

I can also be available to head out on Friday if anyone would like to join me. We could explore the Smugglers Cave side as well as the Campsite area around the Table Mountain side.

If there is no wind.....I may even opt for camping along the ridge which would give views of the sunrise over Yuma and the entire desert below!

I'm tempted to try and find the Corrizo Gorge Trestle Bridge....but it would mean parking my truck and a LONG hike. (I don't like leaving my truck alone!)

I am also considering heading down to Anza~Borrego after Table mountain and doing Canyon Sin Nombre and the Del Diablo trail including the Drop Off and heading out Fish Creek. I will be camping in Anza~Borrego at my favorite little traveled campsite with Awesome Star Gazing going on!!!!!!!! I will share this campsite with whoever follows along....but I'm not anouncing it to the world!

At the end of the trip I will be heading home through Julian. For me....it's a nice big scenic round trip!

So if anyone is interested in joining me............Let me know NOW!

If you hike to the trestle, it needs to be overland & not following the train right of way. Since train service has been restored they do patrol & ticket trespassers (heavy fine).

Sorry I can't join you for this weekender, I'll be returning from the Sierra Madres.

Kevin.........

Since this is a VERY Sleepy thread with no interest I have decided to do the following. (caution....it may be double spaced for ease of readership.)

I've decided to take the baby out for a spin and head to Lake Arrowhead for the Oktoberfest which includes the Porsche Parade on Sat. My daughter would really enjoy this and I/we need some good father/daughter time!

I can be available to meet you with my truck early Sunday am. if you would like to just make a day of it around the Table Mtn. area.

My offer in my post above still stands (just at a later date) and I can always revive my trip thread at 4WDtrips.
