View Full Version : Soap
For those of you who shower in the back country, what do you use for soap? Obviously something biodegradable, but are there any specific brands/types that are better for the environment and/or better for their intended purpose.

Camp suds! Available nearly everywhere except Bed Bath and Beyond. And if your "everywhere" consists of outdoor shops. Linky at REI (http://www.rei.com/product/48015958.htm?vcat=REI_SEARCH)
Since taking a shower in the wild is already a damn good feeling, go ahead and wash everything on your body with it. Use a loofa (?) if you want.

Camp suds!
Nice, we have used that stuff for doing dishes for years and already have lots of it on hand. One less thing to buy!

Dr. Bronners (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._H._Bronner) almond or peppermint castile soap rocks. Too bad their website seems hosed, but you should be able to find it pretty easily. A lot of camping/outdoors stores carry it, and lots of supermarkets and almost all natural-foods stores have it. The great thing is that it works, is made with good stuff, is very inexpensive, and smells great.

Kewl stuff..........that Dr. Bronners!
I would prefer bar soap.
OK!...........
So which Flavor attracts the 4x4 Chicks:cool: ..........and NOT the Hairy Bears?!!!:Wow1: ........ .........
i've never smelled the bronner's, but anything with a sweet or perfumey (yup, perfumey) smell will attract mosquitos, bee's, wasps, and only slightly more irratating: bears of all genus. now i am not a biologist, but thought i'd pipe up with some of my experience.

I won several years worth of Dr. Bronners bottled soap at a bike race. I thought what a crappy prize! But after I used it, it's like the best!
It's not perfumy. It is probably the cleanest, most refreshing soap ever. It kinda feels menthol-y so I would guess bugs would not like it.
I noticed Trader Joes carries it now.

Dawn dish soap is also supposed to be biodegradable believe it or not. I use it sparingly... a little Dawn goes a long way. I wouldn't wash my person with it though... it chaps my hands pretty bad and that's the only place I want chapping. =)
I'm going to look into Bronners at TJ's next time I'm there... thanks for the pointers.

If they knew, they'd be...well...selling it in bottles. By the truckload.
The 4x4 chick remains elusive, but usually because of what lies beneath the flavor of 4x4 dude's soap scent - a potentially irresponsible, flighty, wondering, running, wandering spirit that can't be cleansed with soap. When scoring a 4x4 chick, it's most likely not about the soap......:costumed-smiley-007

Dr. Bronner's is very good stuff.....and not to hijack, but....
....if anyone here is having problems finding it where they are at, I can ship it to you. I have a climbing/camping store in Lancaster PA. We carry Dr. B's in a 32oz bottle (14.50 retail), a 4oz bottle ($3.99) and a bar soap (pure-castille) ($4.25). If you are a member on here and want to order, I will offer 20% off. Just add the shipping (either UPS or USPS). I do have pay-pal also.
I have been snooping around here for a little while, this is a great site. I planned on doing a thread on the store, but I'll post some info on this one...I carry stuff from Marmot, Cloudveil, Prana, Gregory Packs, Kuhl, Scarpa boots, Garmont, La Sportiva, Jetboil, Black Diamond, Camp Equip., Bridgedale and Teko socks, and Sherpa Adventure Gear. We opened earlier this year and I have a website up, but it is not complete yet, www.peakelevation.net
We do trips out of the shop, nothing vehicle based yet, but I want to start to work on that.
If you have any questions or needs, please let me know.
Thanks, Jason
