Yes, the Safari hat....
http://www.bentgear.com/images/KAR0002.jpg
I'll be honest, I know that these aren't necessary all the time, but when I'm on hikes and generally out an about exploring on a camping or wheeling trip, these come in really handy for keeping the sun off your neck and face.
I haven't owned one in a few years and am looking for a narrow rimmed version. What brand style do you use and where can I find it online?

I picked one up a little while back at our local military surplus store. It is the narrow rimmed version. Mine is digital desert but they had black, khaki, blue, and all the other camo paterns as well. I think it was only $14.00.

back wards kavu visor works for me. it generally gets use as a head-band to keep the hair from going everywhere and acts as an optional hat just in case.

I like hats. I have a variety of hats that I wear when out wheeling / camping / hiking.
My old stand-by is my issue desert-cam floppy hat:

Another of my favorites is my Confederate Cavalry Officer's hat:

And - FOR YEARS & YEARS - I've been lusting after a real genuine Aussie Slouch Hat (http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=80&ad_code=FR_1601), but I haven't decided to pony up the $150 for it yet. If I ever get one, that will become my standard "Expedition Hat".

As to whether they are necessary all the time, well, for me and others who are "hair follicle challenged" :D and considering the number of skin cancers I cut off people every month, I'd say, yes, they are.
I, too, have a Tilley Airflo. Great here in the summer heat.
Also a generic canvas "safari hat" that I wear more in the winter for added warmth.

Another vote for Tilley hats. I must have 6 ot 7 different hats but I usually gravitate back to the Tilley because it is so comfortable and functional.
Bad shot for the hat but it's all I could find.

I usually wear a baseball hat. I have a closet full of all sorts of full-brim hats, but I keep going back to either my OJ hat or a faded blue fitted baseball hat I bought back in '96 or so. It's pretty much purple now from the sun.
I always carry a boonie hat of some type for the rain or sun, but rarely use them.
You know how sometimes you put something on and you just look silly in it?
Thats me and safari hats. I can't find one that doesn't look odd on me. So, I am relegated to baseball caps or the Fidel style hats in the truck.
Once out of the truck I usually go to a cowboy hat for full coverage.
The cowboy hat still looks funny on me, but somehow I enjoy it so. :PROFSheriffHL:

My primary cooler weather hat is a Tilley T3 model, which I love but also found it to be too hot in warmer months. I tried a Tilley T3 Airflow but found it did not cool enough for me. I ended up with a DPC mesh vented hat, which is a little larger brim then my Tilley and vents very well.
So basically I have two different hats depending on what conditions I will be in. :sombrero:

That's my feeling, too. Tilley hats seem like they are nice, but not spending $80 is easy to when surplus places have real poly/cotton boonie hats for around $10~$12. A couple of years ago I picked up a couple when the place near me was selling them 3 for $20. That was right around the time the ACUPAT and MARPAT utilities were being rolled out and so apparently they were flooding on the market with desert and woodland patterns as they replaced the DCUs and BDUs. Beauty is I don't mind using the stash of boonies working outside getting sweaty, dirty, working on a roof or swinging hammers, getting nasty during vehicle repairs or recoveries, backpacking, dunking them in water to cool you down. They last forever.

I got a great Mill Surplus jungle hat that I use year round and is espescialy good on rafting trips. It's got a map pocket and shotgun shell rings around the body of the hat. I've never used them, but hey it's nice to know I've got a place for ammo should I ever need it eh ;) HAHAHA
I also have a really nice Akubra that I bought to work in while in Australia. They're pretty expensive but beautifuly made, along with Bundstones they're pretty much a staple item out on cattel stations and in the bush. It is a great hat for really hot sunny climates and even though it is quite thick and made of heavy felt it stays quite cool because of the large ammount of space above your head. Plus it's like having yur own tree to atand underneath in terms of shade. It's really nice.
This is pretty much what it looks like except I made a custom hat band out of an aluminium fence wire-tie.http://www.nungar.com.au/catalog/images/Bronco.jpg

I've got a Tilley as well. Going on 10 years. I used to use it a lot when we were boating too. It makes a great floating beer cozy!
:ylsmoke:
I can't help, since I like the large brimmed hats (sunburn easy, family history of skin cancer, multiple burns at a young age, balding, etc.)
I seem to collect 'tourist' hats.
The first say's "Costa Azul" on it
The second say's "Hawaii" (I forgot to bring my Costa Azul one)
The third one say's "Cancun" (I forgot to bring along either of the first two)
Then another "Hawaii" hat,
etc...

Being Bald, or Folically Challenged;) You'll almost never see me in the sunlight without some sort of hat on.
Not that I'm trying to hide the bald head, I have no problem with that, I've just heard too many medical reports about how bad it is to let your scalp get sunburned. OUCH!! It causes a headache for a few days I've learned the hard way.
One thing to remember, I have one of the Boonie Hats with with mesh on the sides to keep the head cool, and hiking one day in the full sun, came home with a nasty sunburn on the sides of my head that had a nice mesh pattern in it:yikes:
If I know we're going to be in the sun all day, I now also put a bandana on the ol' noggin too.

A few years ago we were in Gander Mountain, shopping for hats. I never wore hats before, but with my follicles becoming more and more challenged it became a necessity. So, here we were, picking hats...I look like a total goofball in a baseball cap; some people can pull them off - even to the point of redneck chic; but I can't. Found one I looked good (I hope) in, walked up to the register and DING! "That'll be 74 dollars" :yikes: still, I bought it, wear it a lot, I go fishing - it floats down the river; I retrieve it. I go canoeing - it floats down the river; I retrieve it. I go swimming in the ocean - it floats on the waves; I retrieve it. See a pattern? Hats that float are good, I wear a Tilley too.

Ohhh, that's nice !!! It's pushing the budget a bit far, but perhaps strikes a nice balance and is worth saving a bit more for.
I also have an Ultimate Products Inc. Original Khaki Hat. .....
http://images.afmo.com/products/212/00/20/212-00204-2.jpg
I always wear a hat outdoors. For running to town and short outdoor jaunts, it's almost always a ball cap but having gone through a number of brimmed hats for longer days outdoors I finally bought a Tilley LT3. Best damn hat for outdoors use I've owned. It's loose enough but stays on in the windy conditions I often find myself due to the strapping system. It's really a genius design. I love the thing.
During the hottest months around here I often wear an old beat straw cowboy hat but the Tilley really is more comfortable and can be soaked if need be.

Having had Uncle Sam as my haberdasher for 23 years I have a nice collection of boonie hats in various patterns: Woodland camo, leaf-pattern camo, 6 color desert (chocolate chip) and 3 color desert (coffee stains.) For years my 3 color desert boonie hat was my favorite but I lost or misplaced it in October. No worries, as I have at least 5 others waiting, so I switched to a newer one.
Me at the Canyonlands last year:
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z256/ZappBranigan/Utah%20Trip%20March%2008/2008_0324_160147AA.jpg
My opinion on hats is that like sunglasses, ballpoint pens and wrist watches, they need to be "expendable." Even though I make a good living, I could not, in good conscience, lay down $80 for a hat that I'm going to take to the boondocks. If I did I'd want to "baby" that hat and it wouldn't get used the way it needs to.
Plus, let's face it, when we go off-roading and camping, we aren't exactly maintaining the highest standards of personal cleanliness, are we? So in my case, at least, the hat will get dirty, sweaty and eventually get that nasty greasy stain around the inside (when I was in the Army if someone's cap got to that point we'd say "you need an oil change." :D) At that point you could try to wash it but my experience is that (a) the stain won't wash out and (b) washing the hat will destroy any rigidity that the brim has (which is what keeps the sun off your face, ears and neck.) If it's a $10 surplus store special (or, in my case, a $0 Uncle Sam issue), you just toss the hat when you get to that point and get a new one.
A hat, after all, is just a tool. When the tool wears out you throw it away and get a new one, right?

Tilly hats. I have narrow and wide brimmed Tilly's. Yes, they are a bit more money. I have been wearing these two hats for more than 15 years. They are not showing any signs of wear; so I expect another 15 years.

What's your choice for a hat to wear on your expeditions?
Tilley hats have always served me well. Being a lot more conscious about the sun damage I have been exposed to all these years I prefer something with a wide brim. All their products have held up well for me and being able to throw them in the wash is a bonus.

If you like the Safari hat shown earlier in this thread, you might find the Australian Akubra line to your liking. I bought the Akubra "Cattleman" for an African hunting safari. It's a fairly wide-brimmed as I do not like to have a lot of sun on my neck and face. I had been buying from an on-line store called Noggintops. I recently discovered you can get the same hats from an Australian on-line company for half the price!

Sar Squid79, This may seem trivial but when you're looking for a GENUINE slouch hat, it's all in the puggeree (cloth band). See how the one Christopher George is wearing has a V at the front and the one in your link doesn't. Well the Rat Patrol props department got it right. Also the puggeree should have 8 pleats on it. One for every State in Oz. Most cheapies only have 4 pleats. Splitting hairs , I know but a genuine, military badged slouch with chin strap and 8 pleat puggeree is around $190Aud ($125US) here new and the cheaper 4 pleat slouches are around the $110 or $120 Aud ($75USD) mark . So they aren't cheap. Two companies make 'em Akubra and Statesman (used to be Drizabone). You can usually pick them up at the Army disposal shops here if you know someone coming over.
Wish I'd kept mine.

Cast another vote for the Tilley. Mine is about 15 years old, and still going strong. I've worn my Tilley at Point Barrow, Ushuaia, and lots of places in between. It's truly an all-season, all purpose hat. I do wear something warmer when the temps get below freezing.
My hat is one of the large brim, all-cotton models. The Tilley Hat was originally designed for sailing, so they stand up to hours of soaking rain. I have not felt the need to try the newer cotton blend designs or the ones with the extra ventilation.
The strap that holds the hat on your head from the back of your skull as well as under the chin is an under-appreciated feature. The strap really does work, even in Patagonian gales.

Another vote for tilly, love the straps, you can ausie it and tie up both sides
use as a chip strap, or hang on your back when not required.

Hi, this is my first post. I have been lurking for a few days and my love of my Tilley prompts me to post!
I have had my Tilley T3 for around 10 years. It is made of thick canvas and I don't think it will ever wear out. When it gets too dirty I throw it in the washing machine and it looks as good as new. No need to baby it.
I agree that the strap is genius and very helpful. On a trip to Seattle the straps were the only thing that kept my wife and I from loosing our hats on a ferry ride.
I live in southern AZ and the T3 was too hot in the summer so I bought an Airflo. I found that the Airflo was hotter than the T3 since the Airflo is made out of synthetic material. With the T3 I can wet the hat and keep cool.
The might have an expensive list price but a quick search of the internet show that they can be had for less than $50. Still expensive but definitely worth it. :sombrero: Also look around, I found my wife's T3 at a thrift store for a buck. :wings:

I have a Kavu Chillba (conical 'coolie hat'). Frankly it's not very practical. It does provide a lot of sun shade, and is cool, but it is also quite floppy, and hits backpack or seat back. And it does not store compactly.
Their fisherman's chillba
http://www.kavu.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=92&idproduct=170
is more practical. The brim is not as wide, and it folds up enough to stash in a pocket. I keep it in car as a reserve hat.

WOW, this thread really took off while I wasn't looking. I was sure about the columbia, now I'm eyeballing the Kavu in either the Strap Bucket or Chillba. I think the Bucket is more my style.
If I wasn't so indecisive I would have already owned one to take on my recent trip to Mexico where I of course burned my head :(

I bought a wide brim Sunday Afternoons hat, and my wife promptly appropriated it. It probably looks better on her.
I've owned a variety of the legionnaire style hats with neck drape. My current favorite is ORs. This style does not interfere with a backpack. The neck drape also adds protection against mosquitoes.

It looks like the Tilley hats are a favorite by a long shot. I must consider buying one. I carry as many as 6 hats. My most recent favorite is a Cabelas, crushable felt hat, with fold down ear flap. It's brim isn't as wide as I would like, but when the weather turns cold while I'm away from my base camp, the ear flap is nice to have.

I mentioned in the Duluth Trading thread by me I had bought a hat from Duluth called The Crusher Hat (http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/clothes-footwear/mens/hats-and-caps-for-men/95873.aspx?feature=product_1).
http://www.duluthtrading.com/services/image.aspx?path=/media/images/products/95873/95873.jpg&width=500&height=500
It is a very nice hat, but the 3" brim is a little to big for my liking.
I am use to hats with a smaller one.
The other day a new Cabelas clothing catalog showed up, (spent a lot this morning, including a new camping chair :D ) and I saw a cool similar hat, but with a 2" brim.
Outback Trading Willis Breezer Hat (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0000478901774a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=breezer+hat&sort=all&Go.y=0&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&Go.x=0&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1)
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Item/90/17/74/i901774sq02.jpg
It too is a crushable design which means you can fold it, smash it, whatever you want to do to it.
I will use both hats, but I think the latter one with a 2" brim will be more to my liking.

I like this hat way better than the Crusher from Duluth.
The brim on the one I got today is 2" compared to 3" fro the Duluth one.
It is $10 more though, but I feel it is a much nicer hat.
Plus it is oiled, so it should shed water too.
Two days in a row the UPS man has dropped off shipments from Cabelas for me ;)
I should total up sometime how much I have spent there since last year when I was ramping up with new camping gear.
I am almost afraid to :D

I am surprised about your quality problems with OR hats. My oldest Seattle Sombrerro shows signs of Goretex delamination (typical early generation tex problem), but the OR sewing has held up fine. A newer (10 years?) SS looks fine. A lighter weight Sonora Sombrerro, probably made from breathable nylon, is also in good shape, despite having been lost at the curb of a bus stop for several weeks. I think I've also mentioned an OR drape hat.
While I use hats regularly, I wouldn't say I'm a hard user. I'm not sure 'hard use' means, assuming it is being used as a hat, as opposed to a water bucket, fly swatter, or oil rag. The main sign of wear on my hats is the sweat stain on the front brim and band.

Yeah I was too, but after 2 of the same hat's going belly-up I decided not to use their hats anymore. I use their over mits almost exclusively in the winter and am MASSIVLY imperssed with them and alot of other gear of theirs I own... the Hats, not so much. Part of it could be from UV breakdown (my hats spend ALOT of time in the sun) or just literaly being ridden hard and put up wet (as in stuffing them in myu dry-bag's/Gamma cans after a days run's) but they flat out failed the test IMO. hate to say it cause I'm a HUGE fan of OR products.

I own 3 Tilleys, two of which have been half way around the world with me and I love them! Of my non-winter ones, I have the "airflow" and the Tilley Hemp and I think I prefer the hemp. Its a natural fibre thats stronger than cotton and is now really getting some character to it. The 'airflow' is made of a breathable mad-made material (I think they call it Nylantium..or something like that). Don't get me wrong, the airflow saved my brains in the 48 degree C Egyptian desert.....but I just prefer the Hemp material.

When it's hot, sunny, buggy, etc., there's no substitute for a kaffiyeh. It's a hat, a scarf, air conditioning, a bug net, instant shade, a tourniquet, a filter, a rag, the list goes on. Cheap, easy to store, easy to wash, durable, and essentially disposable. When it's 105º+ in the desert, my wet kaffiyeh on my head makes it seem 20º cooler. Instant comfort.
Only downsides is that it's kind of a trendy piece of gear, and depending on where you stop in for supplies, it can attract some funny looks from the...ahem...locals.

I'll throw in my vote for a Tilley. I haven't tried the vented version yet, but I plan to. If out in the rain for a length of time, I switch over to a north face waterproof since the Tilley will soak through eventually.
The Tilley guarantee/insurance is worth it:
Insurance
Yes, each Tilley Hat comes with a two-year, all perils, 50% deductible insurance policy. If your Hat has been irretrievably lost, stolen or destroyed within 2 years of date of purchase, we will replace it at 50% of current catalogue price, plus shipping and taxes. Refer to insurance policy for details.
Our Guarantee
If your (unbleached) Tilley Hat ever wears out, mail it to us with a $7.50 cheque (within North America), £4 cheque (within U.K.), $15.00 cheque (other countries) – or the type, the number and expiry date of your credit card – to cover the shipping costs and we’ll replace it free. If you’d like to keep your worn-out Hat, I’m sure that can be arranged.

Finallly a thread I can contribute too!
New to overland-what to do a big build and trip badly but sadly the funds are there (yet!)
I'm terrible at gift ideas so over the years I've mentioned these two CC Filson hats. They are both oil cloth so too hot for summer but I'm pretty sure I'll have them for a long time if I don't loose one.
My fly fishing choice is the Filson Bush hat and I've recently added the packer for it's smaller brim as a travel hat.
They are both pretty stiff brimed so you can shape them pretty easily-I can't tell you how many ticks the bush hat kept off me while fishing in the NC mtns.

ooohhh...hats are my other favourite topic :sombrero:
Being an Aussie, i reckon you just can't go past an original Akubra hat (http://www.akubra.com.au) (US site (http://www.akubra-usa.com/)) for all of your outdoor adventures.
I've reused these pictures from one of my websites which is why the date is on them...anyway...
When i'm spending time in deserts or jungles where either the sun is beating down or the water is coming down in buckets, i usually thow on my Akubra "Coober Pedy" which has a nice wide brim on it.
http://www.splatt.com.au/photos/hats/2003_lake_eyre.jpg
If i'm up in the mountains, the iconic Akubra "Snowy River" gets to come out.
http://www.splatt.com.au/photos/hats/2007_skene.jpg
For other occasions when driving or just travelling in general, my Akubra "International" makes a showing. According to their website and backed up by my own personal experience..."This hat has a unique memory which allows it to be manipulated back to shape if mistreated".

I used to occasionally wear baseball caps (and have a pretty good collection of them), but someone once told me, "if you are not an american and don't play baseball you shouldn't be wearing a basball cap"...makes sense...plus, i first started wearing Akubra's in the 1980s and it's become a bit of an addiction over the years.
The only excpetion to my Akubra rule is when i am out on foot doing the mountain trail thing and don't want to risk loosing my hat in a breeze...that's when i grab my hat that is manufactured by another Australian company called Frillneck (http://www.frillneck.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=24)

Yep, if you like hats of this nature, you owe it to your self to look into Akubras. They're hard to swallow buying from here in the states, I got mine in Australia at a local feed store for oh $75 US... I still love my Ak, but I find it hard to find times to wear it now that I live in this awful thing called a city and spend zero time on a horse mustering cattle anymore... I need to move back to Australia, I really miss it.
Here's me in mine with one of my favorite trucks EVER!!!!!!

If it's summer, I'll take a traditional straw cowboy hat and if it's fall or winter, then it's a beaver blend cowboy hat in black. All other times might be a baseball cap.

http://www.sundayafternoons.com/store/images/D/creamCoffee.jpg
Broad rim--shades entire face
Dark inner--reduces reflected light in eyes
Bright outer--reflects light from head
Sufficient cover of the neck--I never have a sunburned neck with this hat
Ventilated--It's never been too hot to wear this hat, even while hiking in Tucson summers
Adjustable--can fit me or my son if we forget his hat (same hat, smaller size)
Chin strap--can hang off neck when in the shade
Sweat band--eliminates sweat in eyes
Flexible and light-weight--can be stuffed into a pocket if necessary
etc., etc., etc.
Best of all? $36 retail and often closer to $20 at my local outdoor shop. I have several.

I have a Columbia like this one:
http://www.mosquitocreek.com/images/CU9033_365_300.jpg
http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Columbia-Duck-Key-Hat/COL0686M.html
I think it's called a "Columbia Duck Key Hat"
It's great. I can roll it up and shove it in a pack or pocket, get it sweaty (and it has a good sweat band inside to keep it out of my face/eyes), get it soaking wet, wash it in a sink, wring it out. I've gotten it dirty will all sorts of stuff and it's never stained. Also, they are inexpensive (~$20) so if I were to lose it it wouldn't be a big deal.
I typically wear it with the chin strap over the top to hold the sides up, kind of like a double aussie style because I don't like to have it over my ears.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_LeEL6rzBHu4/TCjSKbTV8yI/AAAAAAAAAN4/55CP6pTNcg4/termitesjpg.jpg
I use it a lot, and I've had it almost 7 years and I'm amazed at how we'll it's held up; it's still in great shape almost like new.
If someone were shopping for a wide brimmed hat to use outdoors, I'd recommend one of these or the Columbia Bora Bora with the net sides... or an OR hat (http://www.rei.com/product/745932).

I'll be honest, I know that these aren't necessary all the time, but when I'm on hikes and generally out an about exploring on a camping or wheeling trip, these come in really handy for keeping the sun off your neck and face.

After a recent 9 days in the American Southwest where my kids absconded with my straw cowboy hats, the Tilley LT3 a raved about in January of last year in this same thread is still my favorite outdoor activity hat. I see they've dropped this one and replaced it with a version that has mesh on top. I think I prefer mine.
I also wear one of those wool crushable hats from Cabelas in the cooler weather of spring and fall. During the winter, it's a polarfleece knit cap that keeps my ears warm.
Ball caps are for town and driving and that's my normal daily wear. Once I'm out in the sun for more than a bit, the Tilley comes out.

Since it's winter were some of you are I always loved the ball cap Filson and Carhart hats that have the insulation and fold down ear flaps. The flaps fold up into the hat so when they are up they just look like a ball cap. The Filson is indestuctable, wool lined and water resistant oil cloth and the Carhart is Carhart so you can toss it in the washer. Both are great hats and I can't wait untill we get some cool weather so I can wear them again.

Outdoors for me often includes a lot of time in a boat or on the water. I like a wide brim Aussie style hat as well. A few years ago I found the hat I was looking for on a visit to CA. My other one is the sage color, and is getting beat up and dirty from wearing it at work so much :D
Perfect hat here for the Pacific Northwest weather where we get a lot of rain most of the year.
I work outdoors most of the time during my job, and this hat keeps my head dry, and during the summer I wear it at work too to keep the UV off of my noggin since my haircut from spring to fall is a zero buzz and shaved.
I like the fact that is has the chin strap too as we had some heavy wind at work last week, and without the strap my hat fell off a few times.
Very secure once you use the chin strap.
And with the mesh on the hat it lets a summer breeze in which feels good, and during the winter it is not open enough to make your head feel cold.

The less hair I have the more important my hat becomes  I entered a hat store in St. Augustine, FL last year and asked for a crush-able, indestructible, washable hat that would keep the sun out of my face and neck and would not mind the rain either. The compact sales lady at the store told me that there is just one word for me: Tilley! I liked the hat, but looking at the price tag, I left the store ... without a hat.
Next day, I returned to the store, handed over the $$$ and got a Tilley Airflo. After one year of wearing, crushing and washing, my Tilley performed flawlessly protecting me from the sun and - surprisingly well - also against rain. Probably one of the best investments in any outdoor gear I have ever made.

Looks almost like my hat minus as much open mesh as mine has.

Can't go wrong with a Tilley. Great desert hat but sheds water too. Clean it up in the sink or a stream and it looks like new (or better).

The Army was kind enough to issue me six ACU boonie caps, yet never let me wear them, so I use them for fishing and kayaking.

I am really enjoying my Tilley hat as well. The sting of the price tag is long forgotten at this point.
