I think this would be the right place to post this. I was talking to my grandfather over the weekend and he was telling me of all the great writers that used to have articles in Field and Stream and such magazines. This got us onto the subject of the sporting books of the 40's-70's. He could only remember one authors name and that was Ted Trueblood. Does anyone here have any books on hunting, fishing, camping or just plain ol' outdoor adventures from years past to recommend? Not overly techincal books, but just great outdoor writing.

It's not the oldest, but I will keep plugging my favorite book:

Who Needs a Road: The Story of the Longest and Last Motor Journey Around the World (http://www.amazon.com/Who-Needs-Road-Longest-Journey/dp/0964252155)

Ah, that is a great book! I'll second that plug. I've been readig a few John Gierach books lately and that got me hankering for more. I'm still searching for some articles by Ted Trueblood, so hopefully I'll be able to find some of those soon.

I think Robert Ruark wrote for F & S, I just found his Horn of the Hunter in a used bookstore over the holidays.

Thanks! I just ordered A Hunters Fireside Book by Gene Hill. Sounds exactly like what I'm looking for.
