I'll have to dig some up. Most of mine are prints and I don't have a scanner. The problem with climbing is that your climbing and your either getting a butt shot of the leader or a shot of the follower. It's hard to get good climbing shots if it's just you and your partner. I have an old Patagonia catalog shot of myself I will try and find from about 1988-89.

Be back soon.

Cool. I've never tried aid climbing but it looks like rope drag could be a real, well, drag without some careful directionals.

Cheers,

How in the world do you all not freeze up? Or did you early on? I've done some rock gym stuff, but never outdoors. I worry that I'd freeze up.

Nice! Glad to see you getting into it! I believe that is where a freind and I used to go back when I lived in Albuquerque. It was a lot of fun for those times I just couldn't get out and climb. Now I just don't have the time period.

yeah its a angled roof pitch ... really had to not get rope drag b/c the follower has to just up the lead rope to hand dog off the gear and clean. No real good way to do that pitch.. we whipped out my portoledge to a cool / brisk full moon that night and ate a bunch of noodles and stuff off my hanging stove i made from a MSR pocket rocket. Manged to ride out a thunderstorm too... it was soo baller :) Failed to summit though :(

Freeze up is strictly for ice climbing. Specifically belaying!

The thing about top-roping or climbing second -- where the rope is above you and kept snug -- is it doesn't really matter if you let go or can't make the move. Once your head is freed of that worry its all about climbing just one move at a time and concentrating on that one move.

That's how my head works, anyway. Other heads may vary.

Cheers,
Graham

Who cares about a summit when you come back uninjured! That hunk of rock is still there for you to go back and have more fun! :victory:

Thanks for the pictures. My rock climbing is limited but the guys who put up with me are always fun to be with. :)

hey Nate,

I will be doing some climbing and a lot of winter hiking this year in the White mtns and Adir.

I am doing some training with petra in Burlington and going to sign up with International in NH if you want to get together some time

I am planning on hitting Rainer a few times if you are interested, maybe next spring or so

good to see someone using a helmet! and nice pics

That all sounds great, but I am getting ready to leave for a Pan-American road trip. The time we leave is getting pushed back a little becasue a injury i have to my knee. As soon as that heals I'm out. And are you talking Rainer like Mt Rainer? I havent gotten a chance to do any mountaineering, but I have most of the gear that I think you would need. That might be doable for me. Dependes on what area I am in. Stay updated on the thread posted on my signature or visit the website. Let me know. I have a few friends up here that would be down to climb also.
And about the helmet, I wear it when I remember to throw it in my truck.

Thanks! I've been up the White River/Schurman side once and up from Paradise twice. Once stayed at Camp Muir and the last time we stayed at Ingraham Flats in order to beat the crowds and sleep a little later. :) I still have my Koflach Expe (yellow) boots.

Some amazing pictures from the Expo crowd. I just bought a new pair of shoes and am hoping to put them to good use this winter at Joshua Tree. My climbing has been limited in the last few years and my climbing trip with Graham a few years ago was fuel to the fire to get out and do more climbing. Since then I have climbed a handful of days but made them count. I spent a few days in the White Mountains near Bishop and established a few very nice routes, one on a dome that I had been eying for several years and finally nabbed it with a Bishop local two summers back. I am hoping to get out to JT as much as possible this winter and come summer head back into the whites for more new lines. Always looking for willing partners who aren't afraid of a little exploring and bushwhacking. The fun thing about the Whites is that it requires the use of a 4x4 to get to the goods.

I had to ad a shot of my 6y/o daughter sending on our garage climbing wall:)

Away in the Wilderness, NH, 2009. The Northeast has plenty of this kind of stuff! :) I'm the puffin belaying at the bottom -- real credit to my buddy Rob at the sharp end, my other buddy Eric for bringing the camera, and finally to the sun for not destroying this south facing climb like it had the previous couple of times we bushwacked in.

Unlike...

Black Dike, Canon Cliff, NH, 2010. 500 feet of early season mixed emotions in that permanently shaded, frigid, cleft at the top of a brutal talus slope. Not a great place to drop a tool. Don't ask me how I know that... :Wow1:

Geographic Factor, Rumney, NH. A sport climbing mecca. A couple of guys were styling a 5.12c roof just to the left of this ice. Don't they know its winter?

Some amazing pictures from the Expo crowd. I just bought a new pair of shoes and am hoping to put them to good use this winter at Joshua Tree. New routes and climbing with kids = good stuff. Love it!

awesome! I'm off to Chamonix in a few weeks for a 5 week trip.
CAn you recommend any decent mountains that are suitable for a beginner/intermediate solo alpine climb?

Midi/Plan traverse maybe.

Not a lot of good solo opportunities for a beginner up on the glaciers, as falling in a crevasse is always a possibility.

Mountaineering guides were invented in the Alps so if you can't find anybody else to climb with you will be able to find a reputable guide organization. One advantage of hiring a guide in an unfamiliar place is they know the conditions.

On the other hand, since you're going during winter...

The skiing/snowboarding in the Chamonix valley really is top banana. There are a bunch of great ski areas and you can also take the cable car up to Aguille du Midi and ski down the Vallee Blanche glacier back to Chamonix. Except for the first steep slope its easy (borderline flat and mind over matter on a snowboard) as long as you don't fall in a crevasse but the setting is truly awesome. Most parties hire a guide here, too.

Enjoy your trip -- I'm jealous!

A few photos from last summer's outing to the grotto....Enjoy!
(there's a few nice boondock camping areas around there too if you're driving across the Sierra's and the NATL. park camp grounds are full.)
