What is happening with Wedco water cans?

Will they be available soon?

I have heard the lid will be bigger...why did they do this?

Any sources for old stock?

Found a pic of old versus new. Good luck finding a spout. There are some German Mililitary cans that have mouths like these and spouts are non existent.

I have a source for NOS, but none are blue color if that's what your after. After so many years, why the change in the mouth i wonder. With so much surplus i won't waste my money on new anyhow.

Not sure when the new water cans will be available. As far as the old style goes, I have searched around a fair bit and can not find any more, I think they are gone.

Do they have a food grade lining on the inside?

perhaps they had to change the mouth to avoid any possible conflict (lawsuits) with the CARB cans. it looks too close to the gas cans and those spouts could be used and the water can becomes a gas can. I guess its kinda like the pre/post ban guns, you have to make the post ban cans unable to use the pre ban parts.

The water cans have been out of stock since the beginning of the summer.

The Plastic Group, who owns the WEDCO brand did not place orders with their suppliers to produce any more of the cans.

The reason we heard was that their was a problem with the food grade plastic liner, and they had taken the can off the market so they could redesign it.

Looks like they may have done this.

If the can has a larger mouth I'm sure WEDCO will be introducing a new spout to match it.

I have some of the old style water cans, do you know what the problem with the liner was?

I have two of the older water style cans and after a year the liner was showing rust spots. I like the cans but the quality of the liner sucks. I keep water in mine 24/7/365 as emergency supply. I would like to have the cans redone on the inside.

Sorry I have no idea what the issue was with the liner.

Nothing was ever officially said, it's just something I heard time and time again.

Has anyone heard if/when the Scepter water cans will continue to be available? Looking for the half size 10L. Have found them in sand color, but the OD is out of stock, everywhere!

I spoke with the reps from Scepter at the aftermarket show in Vegas. Scepter has not intention at this time of re entering the US market with their military grade equipment.

Do you know if the Scepter products are still available in somewhere such as Canada? Just wondering. I too would like to find some decent water cans, and it would be nice to have the 10L option as well.

send an email to

I did that inquiring about their can holders and got a prompt response that they will be in-stock next month and I'm on the preorder list for two of them.

Also looks like they have spouts in-stock currently but no water cans.

good luck

For anyone who might be interested, I finally found some of the 10L Scepter water cans in stock (several colors) after a long search. It appears they have 20L water cans too. They carry fuel cans as well, but obviously won't ship these to the US.

Do the Scepter water cans impart any sort of plastic taste to the water or do they truly keep the water taste free?

They always did for me. I initially wash them out with a bleach/water solution and that seems to minimize it.

I've had one that I use and never noticed a plastic taste. It's a blue one that I have had for a couple years.

My Aqua-tainer tastes like blue plastic, but I actually prefer that flavor to the garden hose water flavor that would otherwise be present in my supply. Only the best for my family ....

I'm not surprised to hear that the food grade coating in the Wedco water cans has problems, as I have experienced it first hand.

I have a Wedco water can and spout. I bought them 3 years ago, and never used them until last year. After just a few days out on the trail, I noticed brown rust spots around the neck of the spout. After a week on the trail, I poured water from the can, and it was noticeably brown and smelled of rust.

I contacted the distributor I bought it from, and they replied "The can is metal, and metal rusts. There is no guarantee it won't rust." He went on to say that he dries them out each time he uses them. Since mine was dry when I bought it, and rusted within a few days of having water in it, I cannot see where drying it out after each use has any value to a user who is on the trail for extended periods of time.

So, I spent about $65 for a can an spout that are useless to me.

I tried contacting another distributor, to see if there was any solution or way to recoat the can. No answer from them. Since I know they monitor this forum, I would really like to hear if there is any contact info at Wedco. So far I have not been able to find any.

About eight months ago I talked with Wedco. Customer Service said, they were waiting for a shipment of (Metal) Blue Jerry Water Cans from Russia. About a month ago I followed up with Wedco, I was told they had received they're shipment of cans and spouts. I also talked with Robert with Overland Trailers and I believe he has received a pallet of the water cans, you might want to give Robert a shout to see if he has any available.
