The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Mercedes 3.0L diesel is included in Chrysler's recent "employee pricing" discount plan. If you specify the Laredo X trim package with diesel engine, the price today is about $31,000. Add $2000 more if you want to upgrade to the Limited model, with leather trim and MiGiG system.

That's about $8000 less than last Fall.

For this money, you get a mid-size SUV with 3.0L diesel, 5 speed auto trans, Quadra Drive II full-time 4x4, low range, limited slip diffs front and rear, traction control, hill descent control and hill start assist. Plus you have Jeep's limited lifetime powertrain warranty.

[Edit: Unfortunately, Jeep doesn't offer the lifetime warranty on diesel engine vehicles.]

The EPA rates the 3.0L diesel at 22 mpg highway with the 5 speed auto trans. Real world mpg reports I see online have the diesel highway mpg closer to 25. That's not bad for a full time AWD vehicle with 375 ft-lbs of torque, and rated to tow 7400 lbs. Using the EPA 22 mpg and the 21 gallon fuel tank, you've got a very useful 460 mile range.

Jeep is not offering the diesel engine in the 2009 Grand Cherokee, so you have to purchase a 2008 if you want the diesel. The 2008 diesel requires ULSD fuel, but does not use urea injection (AdBlue, Bluetec, and so on) to improve emissions.

Damn shame they don't offer the Commander with the diesel and at or about the same pricing.

I was under the impression that the 3.0CRD diesel was discontinued last November...is this remaining stock on hand?

Either way I don't feel to bad as last fall I was able to pick up a fully loaded Limited 4x4 for invoice which was $37k and some change at 0% financing. The only options I didn't get at that price were rear seat DVD and the HID lamps.

"is this remaining stock on hand?"

Yes. If you use an auto search web site like Autotrader.com, you'll find that many dealers still have 2008 Grand Cherokees with diesel engine in their inventories. They are available in Laredo and Limited trim packages. I'm not sure if the diesel was offered in the Overland model.

If you'd like help finding a vehicle at a dealer near you, tell me your zip code and I'll search for you.

New 2008 Grand Cherokees are available with V6 and V8 engines, too, for even less money. I don't think there were significant changes to the Grand Cherokee in 2009.

I already bought my crd grand and I could not get the lifetime powertrain warranty because this vehicle is a diesel.

Unless things have changed the lifetime warranty does not apply to diesels and the high performance versions of the cars, srt I think but I forget what letters chrysler uses.

Mine is an 07 so I don't have the my gig or hill decent stuff, still a heck of a vehicle.

I was able to get an "extended" warranty for 7 years and 85,000 miles which ever comes first. The 7 years isnpt an issue with me but with 12k in milage after 7 months of ownership, the 85k is. When I asked about it, I was told that 85,000 miles was the max available for the CRD.

Heck, I'd wait until the sale to International is done and they start making diesel grands with solid front axles or a hemi 5.7 solid axled Rubicon Grand. :) :) (see April fool's JP)

Isn't that the truth. That would certainly be a nice platform.

The Commander was getting killed soon, last time I heard.

Not to mention Jeep may not exist in a few years.
