I thought it'd be cool to do an official intro for the bike section of all of the MTBers & Expedition Bike riders... Who you are, where you're from, what you ride... What's you're mojo... Etc :)

So.. Post up!

( I'll go as soon as I can find some of my pics :) )

So something like:

My name is Thom and I have a Bicycle Addiction. These are 3 of the 9:

All I did was add the Avids, shorter RF stem, and the smoothies.

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u196/ntsqd/Bike%20Stuff/IMG_0283-1.jpg
Built to resemble an early Mt. Tam bike as featured in the Smithsonian article. 70's era Schwinn frame, Landing Gear Fork, 8 speeds, Atom/Sachs drum brake hubs converted to sealed cartridge bearings, poly lined internal cable routing, 35 lbs.

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u196/ntsqd/Bike%20Stuff/SSone.jpg
Bike is an SS build from parts sourced as my student budget could afford them. I was riding it by early '98. Uses a short cage road deraileur for tension after a Singlator type device proved totally unreliable on the Downieville Downhill. Too fat to ride it much these days.
Trailer is a scratch built sized to hold exactly 3 full brown paper grocery bags (remember those?). Frame weighs 11 lbs, rear wheel & tire assembly weigh 10 lbs. :bike_rider:
EDIT: Just noticed that my Chico Townie is sort of visible hanging on the wall in the background. S-A drum hubs, unkwn BMX Cruiser frame, Powerlite bars.

Jon. Just recently dusted off my USA 1995 Trek 950 to get it on singletrack again. No pics but its the "vintage" (ha) green to purple fade. Hoping to upgrade to a rear suspension bike without centerpull brakes soon, and retire the Trek to neighborhood use.

My other bike is a '93 Giant Iguana with a Rock Shox Indy XC front fork, otherwise stock. Had this bike since I was 13 (yes, its been that long) and did one trip to Mammoth with no suspension. My brain is still vibrating from that trip ;)

Wish I could afford a new bike but its not in the cards right now...

Hi, my name is Todd... and I wish I rode more often.

Did a ton of road and mountain biking in the '80's in Tucson. Now it's a once a week commute and maybe a Sunday cruise with the wife every now and then. :(

Road bike since 1985: My build - 1984 Trek 760 frame, Campy, Galli, Specialized & other components. Finally gave-up on sew-ups in 2008 when I had my wheels re-built with clinchers.

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg304/phxtoad/TL%20Bikes/IMG_1365a.jpg

Mountain bike since 1998 (or was it 99?). Ibis Alibi. New rubber, but thinking about going to street/dirt 2.1's...

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg304/phxtoad/TL%20Bikes/IMG_1366a.jpg

The Cruising Vessel. 2008 Trek Classic. Really fun to commute on actually (14mi R/T in cruise mode). Wald Giant Delivery basket hold to hold my flips.

Very cool guys....

Here is my rundown.. I thought I'd let the bikes tell some stories...

First, here is my little breakdown of bikes/ the garage. Between of the two of us (me and my wife) we have 8. Then we probably have another half dozen down at the shop which are mostly POS burning man bikes & old cruisers... In my hands are the bars off a '71 Honda motorcycle that will likely end up as the handlebars on my cruiser/townie (the white trek in front of me).

Bikes from left to right are:

Hanging left:
My Ventana MTB
The '98 S-Works Single Speed

On the floor:
my old mid 90's Trek Hybrid/Cross
Carrie's Cruiser

to the right of me, in the closet:
Carrie's Giants: her roadie and her full suspension

hanging on the wall:
Motobecane 29er Outcast - single speed
My old Univega roadie, still truckin...

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25945&stc=1&d=1234997205

More bikes: My wife Carrie. This is a Burning Man bike. This is my buddy's turbo diesel 60 to the left of her under construction... We have probably a half dozen more Burning Man bikes mostly down at the shop (where this pic was taken). That is also an old mid 50's Schwinn tandem frame, brazed. Probably too rusty, unfortunately to do anything with...

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25942&stc=1&d=1234995918

Bike stories:

I started riding as a kid when my dad got us old Specialized Hard Rock bikes when we were about 12 or so and we basically rode them to death through about 16 or 17 when we finally got our first cars...

We grew up in the Adirondacks (upstate New York) so had free range with little danger so we were sort of gone all the time, playing with buddies, biking and skate boarding. The two towns (Keene & Keene Valley) are about 5 miles from each other and between them is the Ausable River with small and medium cliff jumping and fishing and swimming holes all over the place. The MTBs were basically the method of transportation and sometimes we'd ride 15 or 20 or 25 miles in a day between the towns and swimming holes. We lived at the top of the road about 4 miles straight uphill (in the highest house in New York State) so that was part of the trip too, streaming down hill at 45 or 50 etc - pretty scary and crazy looking back at it. No sunglasses required as we'd go so fast the tears would come out of the side of yours eyes and stream towards your ears...

Years go by without riding and finally, one day, I spent a whopping $90 for an old road bike (old 10 speed) that was an early 80's Univega. This was in college in Burlington VT.

I was an intern earlier that summer down in D.C. for a summer and we hung out at a nasty bike messenger bar (dollar Guinness) in Madams Organ and became friends with some of those dudes (and thought messengers were "cool" - as nutso as they were getting hit by cars regularly). So that was my style in Vermont on the Univega, rippin through traffic, usually no helmet. Quite retarded. I'd also find myself in the middle of nowhere miles and miles from anywhere and was my one and only time I was a "roadie" to an extent... Burlington is (or was at the time) cool because you could be in the middle of nowhere within 5 miles... The Univega is the first/closes bike on the right in the top-most pic, with the mustache bars with white handles (still truckin' 10 speed style) and would be a hell of a fixie today... Here she is and a friend's old S-Works on the roof of my HJ60 making the trek across the country when I was moving out west in 2001. Somewhere around Gunnison Colorado if I remember correctly.. Pardon the crappy pic, photo of a photo:

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25946&stc=1&d=1234997205

In 2005 Carrie & I started going to Burning Man so we acquired a plethora of bikes related to that, mostly cheap off Craigslist. This is my mid 90's "Trek Hybrid" that has been through hell and back and has never so much as even had a flat. I bought it for $15 at St. Mary's thrift store in Heber City. She's about to see full retrofit into 'cruiser' status with some fatty/knobby cross tires and a paint job. This is the one that will end up with the Honda motor cycle handle bars.

This was also my 'first MTB' here in Utah (I was literally rippin' around on it, including some crazy descents!).. LOL, it's also a '29er' with its 700c cross wheels... She is still my #1 townie:

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25949&stc=1&d=1234998112

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25950&stc=1&d=1234998112

After the Trek and my wife's cruisers made the trip to Burning Man on the roof of the diesel '71 FJ55...http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25947&stc=1&d=1234998112

When I got being really into MTB again I ended up with an old 2001 Stumpjumper hardtail from a friend for only $150 if I remember correctly. Not a lot of change between (hard tails at least) from 2001 and today. One of the last great Specialized bikes with real class, they just don't make them like this any more.... The frame was about 3.5lbs and pretty killer and just a hair small so now it lives in New York State with my little brother as his #1 bike... This bike brought the 'biker' out of me again here in Utah as I'd been years and I live in MTB heaven and was hardly riding (doh!)... Since then it's been a pretty brutal addition (and loving every second of it). This little bike also went through hell and back for me and was my #1 MTB even through all of last season...
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25943&stc=1&d=1234997205

I also bought a really clean (basically brand new) '98 S-Works frame on Ebay as a result - for only $36! This is both "my baby' but one of the bikes I ride the least as it's also a hair too small for me. It will be really hard to ever sell this bike though. It's only been a single speed since I've owned it but have switched to 29er permanently for any single speed activity... It would make a good townie though, maybe.. I also found the magic gear (36/20 or 36/21 works great on it), chainstays at 16.93" if it helps) and 36/15 also works killer for around town... I rode this guy even through the spring of this year (and riding single speen made me a much much stronger rider in general).

Again, this bike really has a ton of old school Specialized class...
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25944&stc=1&d=1234997205

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=25948&stc=1&d=1234997841

Finally, last fall I started researching and researching on potential bikes, mostly using the MTBR forums to finally move beyond POS/old used bike status. I was able to get cost through a friend and basically ascended right to bling-MMM MTB. It also uses 650b wheels which are a pretty sweet hybrid between 29er and 26" wheels, gaining a lot of momentum... Really a work of art. She is shortly getting a new RockShox fork and getting bumped up to 5.5" travel. She is a good all-mountain style bike as is currently my go to and I already have thousands of miles on her... XT components, Hadley hubs, yada yada...

Some build up pics... Really, a work of art in every way in opinion. Also, durable and stiff as hell. And finally, hand made in California. I bought the frame primarily because it fits me well, but 650b also intrigued me and it's been a sweet ride.

The PO looked buff enough to support her claim of having been a serious rider. It had been poorly maintained and she had mentioned that she had been riding after she stopped racing. I suspect that the bike didn't mean anything to her because it didn't cost her anything since her mechanic built it up from sponsored spare parts and she claimed that the frame had "gone soft". If she was spinning a story then she's pretty danged good at it. I'm still cleaning WD-40 grunge out of some of the little grooves in the weld beads. I've had to replace all of the drive train. Couldn't convince the pedals to come out of the crank arms - badly twisted a hex key trying, so it now has some 105's on it.

Frame is a GT according to the typical badge welded to the rear of the top tube. Fork is a carbon fiber Coda 'Slice.'

Those weren't the wheels that came on the bike, she didn't have the original wheels for the bike any more. These were just "some wheels" that she had. I looked them up shortly after I got the bike, well over a grand in late 80's dollars is what I recall. They're also known for sudden total failure, usually resulting in rider injuries. Right now it's on my trainer.....

I'm into older bikes and deals.

My daily driver is a 1995 T700 Cannondale that just got a set of Tiagra Brifters, front derailleur and a 105 Rear derailleur and a 9 speed rear wheel upgrade. It also got a Octalink 26/39/48 crank set I am not sure I like. When I go touring I think the 22/32/44 Coda cranks are going back on it. SKS fenders, Brooks Champion Flyer, Topeak MTX rack and trunk bag with fold out painers to make it a nice rounded out driver. Don't have a current picture. here is some older ones.

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26168&d=1235614034

My dry single track/ backup/ utility bike is a 1998 M400 made more of a hybrid with a Specialized Crossroad on the back for traction and the 85PSI rating and a Specialized Hemisphere up front. MTX Rack and Planet bike fenders.
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26164&d=1235613558

My Sunday driver is up for sale as my lower back just cant handle the riding position. Its a 1989 SR600 3.0 frames Cannondale. Full 105 group with a 7 speed Uniglide and Biopace 105 crankset. Wolber GTX wheels with Contact Ultra sport tires. Fase but painful. I refer to it as the "cruel mistress" She hurts my back and my nether region and makes me walk funny for days after 40 mile rides.
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26165&d=1235613558

One of my wife's bikes is a real find....a $10 thrift store find. A bike I figure has about 50 miles on it before it was left neglected in a garage for 20+ years. Its a 1987 Georgena Terry "Gambit" Its a women's specific bike made for somebody 4'10-5'2" (wife is 5ft). It has a 27 inch rear wheel and a 24 inch front wheel to allow for minimal toe over lap with an appropriate top tube length while keeping nice seat and head tube angles for stability. 4130 CroMo frame, Sugino crankset, Shimano light action derailers with indexed shifters and DiaCompe brakes with "junior" brake handles. It is all original down to the bar tape and tires.
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26166&d=1235613622

Her other bike is as near as I can tell a 1984 Cosaro "Cabrio". Can find almost nothing of the brand. It was sold from Greggs bikes according to the sticker but nobody that currently works there has been around there long enough to remember anything about them LOL. Interesting high mid tier Mixte bike. Tang Alloy 2001 frame (MnCo), Suntour ARX derailleurs, Ratchet shifters, Suntour Freehub, Rando bars and Diacompe 500 brake set. This bike needs rims. Back is ben and the front is a cheap replacement Trying to find a good front hub that matches and lace a set of matching rims. This bike is known as "La gomme de visage". Thats French for "The face eraser". Wife face planted the first 200ft she rode it. :Wow1:

My name is Yubert and it's been 5 years since I've actively rode my MTB bikes. My favorite local trail was the San Juan Trail. I'm so out of shape, I doubt I could ride up let alone down that trail.

However, I'm planning to get back into MTB and thinking of upgrading my bikes. I like the Santa Cruz Blur and the Lightspeed Niota.

My current rides are a 1998 Klein Manta Race and a 1997 Schwinn S-Carbon, both pictured below.

Great thread, just in time for spring!

Lots of bikes at our place. I have three old-skool Raleigh 3 speeders rocking around town. You could all me the "fleet administrator". I give/loan them to people and they just keep going, they bring them back when they break, it<s fun to be biking around downtown and see one of your "loaners" chained to a post somewhere!

Andre, your Univega had me doing double takes, it reminds me of one of my favorite bikes. My dad rode an old 63cm frame raleigh road bike all over europe and he had it while we were kids. It got too rough and he hung it up in the rafters and ended up buying a nicer racer, and I eventually laid claim to it. At 6ft4 it was about perfect for my frame, so I built it up and rode it for a few years as my main commuter. But, it was always a little too big for me and I eventually started riding a smaller frame. It got stripped and the frame got hung up for a while. My girlfriend rows competitively and I was at practice one day checking it out and this poor guy, about 6ft 6, shows up on a super small and rusty race bike. Poor guy looked so uncomfortable. So I built up a parts-bin-special racer out of the old raleigh frame and gave it to him. A few years later he's still riding that big blue horse.

My own bike fleet is an 80's bright purple tange frame setup fixed gear with profile deep Vs and Surly hubs, a Trek Fuel 80, an awesome Azonic dirt jump frame I am building up single speed, and an old Pista track bike that my girlfriend has laid claim to...

Keith and I ride Giants. A Reign for the dirt and a TCR for the road. Wiffy has the same bikes. Good thing is I can steal parts from her bikes. Bad thing is I spend twice as much on parts.

I always joke with my wife, "If you come home and find my bikes, Land Cruiser and dog gone, be worried. I might not be coming back...."

Well it has been a very long time since I have ridden but that will change soon. Here is my trusty Rascal. In the 90's, this bike meant more to me than anything. I had to take out a loan for it. It cost a lot more than the Camero I was driving at the time. I love this bike and would never get rid of it although I did consider it at one point. I just bought the love of my life her first bike for her birthday, a Trek 7.2. Now I have a partner to ride with again and look forward to riding all the fantastic trails in New England.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/7wt/DSC_0002-1.jpg

The bike is in pretty much the same condition as it was when I rode it back throughout the 90's except for the pedals. I had a set of Onza clipless pedals that were rusted out and my Sidi's were shot and I didn't want to buy new shoes so I just threw on the Haro flatties. XTR, XT and LX groupo with Syncros bits for good measure.

If she catches on to cycling (I really hope!), I'll get her a proper bike. Please ignore the gigantic DH pedals that I put in place of clipless that she is not ready for yet.

Finally bought my first "real" Mt. Bike last weekend. It's an 09 Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc.

I made my Roadmaster mountain bike last me through college for 4 years, though after actually trying some mountain biking senior year with it, it was pretty much worn out. A couple years later I decided I needed a more active summer hobby so I went shopping again.

I test rode so many bikes I can't remember them all. SEVERAL specialized bikes including all the different hardrocks, a couple rockhoppers, even a crosstrail, trek 4300's, raleigh mojaves, and finally a couple of Gary Fishers. I even test rode a Montague paratrooper and came close to ordering one, but decided the cost-benefit of the folding frame just wasn't worth it for my needs. My budget was in the 400-600 range and the Wahoo really just felt the best. I was originally going to just go with the rim brakes but having never ridden with discs I just wanted to try it, so I figured it was worth the initial investment.

I will admit I had a little buyers remorse last weekend thinking I'd gone a little overboard, that is, until I went riding with it Sunday on the local Lodi Farm trails.

I FREAKIN LOVE THIS THING!!! I'm so glad I made the jump and wish I did a long time ago. Now I can't wait for my next chance to get out on the trails.

Thanks again to all who helped in my decision making process.

I've got 5 bikes. I cycle thru them every couple of years. This year it was time to replace my hardtail, a Kona Pahoehoe which I bought new in '98. I replaced it with a Kona Unit 29er hardtail, which I added gears to. I'm likin the 29er.:bike_rider:

You'll quickly see a theme here: We live in Bellingham just down the street from Kona Mountain Bikes. Transition is just up the road also.

My main bike is my Kona Dawg Primo, 5" front and rear. It rails the turns and its perfect for my tyope of riding. No suprise as it was researched and developed on my home mountain, Galbraith, in Bellingham, Wa.

For the bigger drops and for weekends at Whistler I have a Kona Stinky Deluxe, 8" front and rear.

My wife (code name "The Jenerator" ) won't part with her trusty '02 Kona King Kikapu (3" front and rear). She also has a Kona Stinky for Downhillin, and a Fire Mountain for commuting. She won a Kona Joe at a bike fest. Its on Craigslist.

When the gang wants to stretch out on the mountain roads, I've got a Felt 65, and The Jenerator has an all carbon Trek 5200.

Oh yeah, and I have a Miata for a river paddling shuttle bike.

(Note the old futon frame recycled into bike rack.)

Well, I don't have anything too special but ride the hell out of what I have. My main three bikes are

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk149/kristian_s/008.jpg
Specialized Epic Comp, running fatty 2.3's on it for trail riding since the rocks really chew up the tires around here. I haven't warmed to disc brakes yet either, I'm a v brake guy.

Specialized Allez Elite

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk149/kristian_s/006-3.jpg
'86 Fugi Cadenza. My first mountainbike. I used it for cross training for when I raced motocross and also used it to preride many tracks. I rebuilt it and gave it to my father who never used it, I repo'ed it and use it for a utility bike/town bike. Probably my most prized bike. I want to swap that cheezey fork back off the front and have been keeping my eyes open for a rigid fork. This bike does it all and hey, check out those biopace chainrings!!

Some of the others...

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk149/kristian_s/oldscannedpics3001.jpg
My old trusty Mongoose Expert Pro, redline cranks, S&M bars, haven't rode it in awhile but used to do alot of dirt jumping with it.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk149/kristian_s/010-2.jpg
My first road bike! Motobecane Super Mirage. I fixed it up for a town bike for my ex girlfriend but utilized as much of the old components as possible. Its a classy ride!

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk149/kristian_s/004-1.jpg
My single speed project. If I ever find the time to finish it. The frame is from my old hard tail Mongoose IBOC Team that I rode for a good 12 years. I've got all the parts I need now aside from a new stem and bars. Going with the old school Amp linkage for on the front too! Should be a light (but wicked stiff) whip.

That's the more interesting stuff. I've got some old cruiser townbikes and such but I've been giving alot of those away lately trying to get rid of some of the clutter. Its nice to have some extra bikes though for when i have guests in town.

Well I have been through a few bikes in the last couple months.

In my Flip pile right now is a VERY nice 1983 Trek 500 (it was a 520 till I stole the triple cranks for my wife's Mixte in page one :bike_rider: ). 1986 Raleigh 460 Technimum. This bike showed up with a bunch of 105 parts on it dated 91. Swapped them out with light action that would have been what it came with.

A Trek 950 that my buddy found on I75 still attached to a Thule rack after it fell off something. Whoever lost it never came back. He waited with it for 25 minutes before throwing it in the truck and selling it to me. The back tire has a bald spot where it looks like it was getting dragged. I think it was on the back of a RV. The bike was VERY beat up and neglected. Tires dry rotted. The Alvino shifters didn't work. Fixed them last night and need to lube the bearings today. Think this one is going too my buddy.

Sold the SR600 after deciding I just wasn't enjoying it and I wanted to buy something else.
Also had a very nice 88 Trek 360 come and go.

Have a very clean 95 Proflex Arcadia I bought thinking that it just needed a rear Elastomer spring. Stuffed a couple spring bushings in it to get it rideable and the drive side peddle hole was stripped. Need to Helicoil that or part it.

My 95 T700 (58cm) is in limbo (and pieces). I found a 98 T700 that was the next size up (63cm). Showed up with Flat bars and 8speed thumb shifters on it and the drops with 8speed STI's in a bag. Cannondale touring bikes make big jumps in sizes. Always felt the 95 was a little on the small size. My optimum size in a road frame is 60cm. I find that despite it being a hair tall I really like the 63cm. The 98 got all the 9speed parts put on it. Already but 400 miles on it commuting and pleasure rides.

Trying to decide if the 95 is going to be sold or build up as a modern "Randoneer" with 8speed STI for Sunday rides and any event rides I do like the Tour de Cure.

The wild card bike was a $8 garage sale find on my street. Its a 1984 Fuji Touring III with a 25 inch frame and a 48 spoke extra HD back wheel (rims match and are correct according to the catalogs). :bike_rider: The frame size is making me think this may be the Randonner and sell the 95 T700. It is in rough cosmetic condition and needs to be fully sanded down and painted. It is actually in decent mechanical condition. It has marks from a full set of racks front and rear. Wish I knew the history (The lady I bought it from does mass estate buys so she didn't know). This bike has been toured a LOT and maintained. It rides wonderful.

A bike that I stumbled onto for my girlfriend.
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u196/ntsqd/Bike%20Stuff/IMG_0704.jpg
It is a steel custom from a builder by the name of Micheal Celmins. It was apparently built for some fellow's girlfriend and she rarely if ever rode it. Those are 700c wheels. Bar & stem are Cinelli 26mm parts. I've yet to find a listing for that short of a stem in any of the Cinelli oriented pages. My tape measure says 42cm CtC. This one cost me quite a bit more than my garage sale (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=349528&postcount=22) find, but it is a sweet heart of a machine & my GF likes riding it because she can go FAST!
She does have some troubles with the friction shifters so I'm on the look-out for some used "Brifters". The wheels shown were built by a friend quite a while back and were put on for the eventual index shifting. I'm not sure why, but I feel compelled to set aside & save everything that I upgrade.

If there are any who remember or know of Rory O'Roark (sp?), I've been told that Celmins built him several frames; and that he stopped building frames just short of 500.

I am really digging this one

Thanks. I am really enjoying it. Did a 47 mile ride on it yesterday. Just a joy to ride. Unfortunately I found cracks in the rim around the spoke holes so I am about to try my hand at wheel building.

Here is "Scrappy". A while back I bought a set of Araya anodized black wheels that had thread on free hub. I was going to build a light single speed with them (and may still do it). Had a 1988 Schwinn 4130 world sport (built by Giant) that was rough and ended up parting it to fix other bikes.

Had a Trek 95 MTB that I sold the wheels to a buddy to help him out (could have sold the bike for a $100 but only had $20 in it so he bough the rims for $20). Threw the 7 speed free hub on the wheels, then stuck all the 950 drive train and bars onto the Schwinn. Rattle caned it satin black, outlined the lugs in red for that "rat rod" look and topped it off wit ha set of 700x23 Continental Ultra sports.

Rides nice! :bike_rider: I may need to add some travel agents or change levers to the brakes. The MTB Canti levers take a LOT of pressure to make the Shimano road bike brakes do their thing. It stops good just takes a lot of grip.

I also found a 70's Raleigh Grand prix 60cm at the curb with the trash. Missing the seat and post (probably a brooks) and the simplex rear derailleur is bet up bad other wise the bike is in surprisingly good condition. Picked up a 18 tooth BMX freewheel and give that a run for a while.

Looks like a great overnight set up.That...is a bit of ultra-light touring genius. It's little more than a Minoura dual-bottle bracket turned upside down. That bracket is normally used to mount two bottle cages behind your seat. I just inverted it and used it to mount an Outdoor Research "Hydrosack" stuffsack. The idea was to simply move the stuffsack down and away from my legs. Worked great. Added no weight to speak of.

By the way, this is more than just an overnight set up. The only limit on the number of days here, is food and water. With no water resupply, this set up would accommodate 3 riding days. With water and no food resupply, I could probably stretch this to 5 days depending on weather.

I have landed way more then I deserve. That Terry I posted on page one is also like new, more so then the Fuji. The 360 Trek and the 500 Trek were both very nice as well. That 73 Grand Prix frame cleaned up very nice. I found a decent Suntour 7 Derailleur that will work for it if I can't fix the Simplex. If I don't have to work this weekend I should have that on the road this weekend.

I live in a hilly upscale area. Lots of these hiding out around here. :bike_rider:

Lined up a set of Brifters for the Trek 950 Touring addition I am building for the wife. I now have all the parts to assemble (once I pick up the brifters) I hope to have that on the road this weekend as well and get my wife riding with me. I'll post that when I get it done.

No, I hadn't heard of Skid Town bikes. I just googled them, VERY COOL!!!

I was lucky enough to aquire 2 of the Cook Bros. Racing's 25 Anniversry cruiser frames (29" wheel) while they were still making them.

My name is Corey, and I just got back into riding again on a 2009 Specialized Rockhopper Pro.

Had the stock tires changed out when I got it to Kenda Nevengal 2.1 stickees, some Shimano pedals I bought years ago that are clipless one one side, and regular on the other, and I put on a Cateye Micro Wireless computer.
Also a Topeak toolkit/bag combo for the seat.

I laced up a new set of fixed gear wheels for the Surly Steamroller to run cyclocross tires and did a 22 mile dirt road ride in the Eveglades today, had a blast! Now it's my favorite "Road bike" paved and unpaved, just swap wheels!

The wheels are: Velocity Blunt rims, Origin8 track hubs and DT Swiss Supercomp spokes. The tires are Kenda Quicker 700x32's. No brakes and gearing is 51x19 (remember it's FLAT in FL).

1speed - That's an awesome set up! My neighbor is into cyclocross and I'll be doing my first race this year, on my Steamroller. I'm looking to pick up some 32-35 tires. My only concern is the mud clearance on the brakes, but I'm sure it'll be okay. I'll probably run freewheel and set up two brakes.

I haven't ridden a bike off road in over 20 years, and when I did I just used standard DF framed bikes. Currently I only have two bikes. My first ten speed, and steel framed Nishiki bought some time in the '70s. I also have a Cannondale ST-500 touring bike bought back in '83. I have front and rear Blackburn racks on it. I should have kept the two Cannondale racing frames I had made as they were from before they sold racing frames and bikes retail. I also had a pair of custom Klein racing frames that were made back in '82. I gave up on them after bending a bottom bracket on one of them while racing.

Single speed 'cross is where it's at. I raced SSCX back in Colorado, and it's amazing how much faster you can be in crappy conditions. Besides, you're off the bike on any section that you'd need particularly low gearing anyway.
I did the Texas CX State Championships in '07 fixed, and don't particularly recommend it if you're interested in results. Sure had fun, though!

My bike choices seem to match my tastes in vehicles as well - I tend to go wtih the classic or older-styled bikes. My mountain bike is a mid '90s Ritchey Project 20 and my road/town bike is a Rivendell Atlantis. My Rivendell has moved its way up the sentimental scale in the past few months because it was stolen this past summer. Through a series of serendipitous events, I was able to track it down and get it back about 6 weeks later. The case is still winding its way through the court system and I was told today that the case will be going to trial (a jury trial for a bike theft :Wow1:) on Feb. 8th. Crazy.

All stock, I know, I know, but try to keep your jealousy in check...

Except for a taco'd front tire and a replaced gear crank. Probably both a result of my supple 230lbs 6'2" frame, especially since they were different incidences.

Just bought a once ridden Trek 820 today off CL for $75 to get back on 2 wheels - as soon as I shed the weight of a small human I'll upgrade into something more serious. Action shots as soon as I can find a camera with panorama mode. It kills me that I had to sell all my classic Schwinn 5spd beach cruisers before we moved out here to the east coast.

This is my new toy. I just go it yesterday. It's a stumpjumper FSR expert 29er. I see why people refer to these as "tractors". This thing is big and slow and feels like it will roll over anything. It's my first mountain bike. I look forward to getting it out on the trails and looking out for trees and rocks instead of cars.

How are you liking the 2x10? I've worked on a couple brand new bikes with it and I liked it then, but I haven't see any drivetrains with more than 400-500 miles on them.

What the heck is that thing on your front valve stem? That's alot of rotational weight!

Hey Bike Mechanic...
So far so good, still not Shimano smooth @ all, but a step in the right direction I guess. I was on the 2x9 FSA/XTR last year and loved it, without issues. hoping the same with this drive system.

Funny you should notice my Bar-Barian shock activated light, daughter gave this to me for Christmas.....who cares about a little rotational weight when you have a gift from your little one rolling with you !!

I run 2x9 xtr on one of my hardtails, and really like it. That big rear cog on the sram appeals to me. I had a co-worker about 7-8 years ago set up his epic with 2x10. He used Campy Record flatbar shifters and drivetrain. He did it more as an anti-shimano move though.

I like the valve cap! It has character!

I know I have nothing near as fancy as the rest of you nor have we went on the long adventures but with my kids being two and four were starting out small and working our way up. So I currently have an "expedition halfwheeler".

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn275/eugenenine/df34e702.jpg

Wife and I have pair if Giant Cypres DX bikes with a CoPilot Limo seat on the back of hers for my daughter and the Giant Halfwheeler behind mine for my son. Since the Halfwheeler hitch doesn't clear the rack so I use some flat aluminum to make some lower mounts to bring it down to the height it was above an adult size bike tire. I'm trying to gear up and prepare for longer trips.

Here's a little closer pic of my mods.

I ride mostly on pavement, since I lean towards the roadie world. Our riding season (non-snow/ice) is fairly short, so I try to make the most of it.

My main bike is a 2007 BMC SL01 Road Racer that I built up with Ultegra 6600 components. It's my race bike, my commuter, my "let's see what's over there" bike... pretty much my go-to bike.

My time trial bike is a 2008 Fuji Aloha CF2. It's a blast to ride, but I don't get out on it enough except for training and races. Too much gravel on the streets, and aerobars are not the most stable platform.

My latest bike is a Specialized 29er hardtail. Nothing special, but I plan on taking it out once the trails dry up a bit more and my fitness improves. Right now it's been limited to rides with the kids and a few short excursions to play around.

My name is Christian and I ride a '95 Specialized StumpJumper M2 FS Comp. I used to ride it on dirt, but lately it's seen much more duty on the wind trainer than anything else. Other than the saddle, seatpost, and carbon fork bridge, it's all original.

I bought it as a year end close out and it's always been a little too small for me. The longer seatpost helped, but the bars being lower than the saddle has only started to bother me the last few years. Tonight, I bought a stem riser to help with the fit and a set of thumb shifters to finally rid myself of the grip shift I've always hated. If those two things don't help, I'll be buying a new bike and turning this into a single speed. :D

Hi,

Have been into cycling since my teens. I started with road racing, stopped for a while and then started with bicycle touring. Totally love it. The longest trip took 10 months through North America.
A little while ago I bought a KHS fully for $300. The bike is nothing special, but has disc breaks and a full deore set. I mostly ride on mountainbike trails here on the west coast. Amazing how much fun one can have with a cheap bike like that!

In the past, I also owned a recumbent. A HP-Velotechnik Streetmachine, a wonderful bike!!!!

This one is really my "expedition bike" it's been every where, I do my URBAN expeditions on a Kona Jake the Snake that I havent taken pics of in a while.
This is an Older Fisher Zigguratt with an XT/XTR mix that I like A LOT. Though I am now lusting after a Specialized FSR 29er that will be mine...ohh yes...it will be mine....

Until recently, my kids didnt think of my trucks as anything more than a method of carrying my bicycles to places to ride.

Just a little note, December 23rd, some jack**** stole my Ziggurat off my rack, right in front of my house.

Lock your stuff folks, with big ugly heavy chains. And always have ammunition ready.

Well, I'm just getting back into the fray after a few years away from cycling. I'm signed up for the Iceman Cometh MTB race in November in northern MI so I need to start training now!

My current stable consists of the following:

Schwinn lugged-columbus tubing road bike with a mix of 105/ultegra/dura ace components. My first new bike purchased when I was 13 (I'm 38 now). One of the last lugged frames built in the USA if I'm not mistaken. It's my baby now and has a few upgrades but I've maintained dura ace downtube shifters and the old crowned/lugged steel fork for the nostalgic look.

Trek 820 steel mountain bike, my first mountain bike I ever purchased. This one is getting powdercoated orange as I type this. I'm building it back up as a commuter/touring bike with a set of Vuelta zero lite wheels and some 1.25" width slick tires. It'll have a rigid fork, front and rear racks, fenders, and a mix of Shimano components with a road triple in the front and 9-speed rear cassettes on both wheelsets. Hope to have the frame back next week and build it up soon.

Specialized rockhopper, my old 26er that I still plan to ride, hardtail aluminum bike with Deore LX/XT components

2010 Motobecane Outcast 29er with Rock Shox fork, disc brakes set up as a single speed with a 9-speed rear hub right now. I just purchased it as a reasonably priced ride to train with my buddies who both have rigid SS 29ers.
Future plans are to install a rear derailleur, shifter and cassette and run it as a 1x9.

2010 Gary Fischer Wahoo - 13-year old sons first rear MTB, he'll be riding with me a lot this summer

Gary Fischer MTB (don't recall model) wife's bike

My name is Marc, and I ride a 1988 Univega Alpina Pro, that I built brand new from the box in 1988. It has the red with black "splatter" "Eddie Van Halen" paint treatment, stock from the factory, along with the Deore grouppo. The only thing not still stock on it is the seat and the handle bars. It looks a little like a bug with big antennae. The handle bars are from an Electra Delux.....think Schwinn Stingray.

I did it and will be adding another bike to in the grarge. This one is the Jamis Dakar 650b2. Did a bunch of electrical work on a friends bike show he moved and could not pass it up. Cant weight to get it and ride. Not to sure on the odd wheel size but for the price I can ride a year and sell it then get another if I like it.

Nice Chumba

I rode Pistol Pete's race bike and ended up in a tree way back when. I still have a hard-tail that was designed after his dual slalom bike. I raced it for a few years in the amcup series and now its a single speed. I started riding with Bike Beat and Chumba.

I like the Chumba alot! It feels very responsive and it's super plush over everything. This is the first build I've done where cost wasn't a major restraint. I tried to make my dream bike, but there are still a few parts that need to be swapped out.

That is a huge statement on a chumba as they are pricey. But you can go down anything as long your inner self does not screeem to loud to stop hence thats how I ended up in the top of a tree.

The only problem now is that Ted is no longer with Chumba and Im not sure on the guys running it now.

My name is Seth and I ride singletrack here in PA on hardtail and full-squish. Being a relatively broke father of two, my bikes are "budget-minded" builds from frames I found on sale and parts from donor bikes and closeouts. Been riding for over twenty years and I am FINALLY planning on taking some MTB-specific trips this year.

KHS xc~304 with and xt/lx drivetrain and Manitou suspension:

Access (Performance Bike brand) built with a SRAM x-7 kit:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd289/sidbass/fall2010037.jpg

Hadn't been on a hardtail in almost a decade so I decided to build one. Really a pretty good ride for what I paid for it ($73 out the door for the frame) and the rest of the parts were funded via sales on CL or trades.

Hello,

My name is Jay. I am seriously bike obsessed. I currently live out of my car and have only two bikes. The one that gets ridden most is a titanium dean soft tail. Is built up nice and burly with a strange mix of parts. I also have a green salsa fargo in xt trim on the roof rack with me. I have been a shop wrench off and on for years before quitting my Job as master technician at rei to hit the road and go ride all over. Check out my blog for the latest mountain bike adventures.

Just picked up a pair of Specialized Hardrocks.

My gf is riding a 2011 model, it's her first bike and got her to go out riding with me. She talked big and bad on a quick 6 mile ride, and then we went for my typical 12 mile ride, and she didn't realize that I'm riding local dirt trails around the area and not just flat road...she's learning to ride trails :) Talk about MTB shock...it broke her in real quick that it's an adventure now, not just cruisin'!

I bought a 2012 model, no frills, but better than my Giant Boulder that I road before. I contemplated getting a model with disk brakes but didn't need it for what we do, though now I think maybe it would have been a good investment as it was way cheaper than buying them later. Live and learn? Or just overcomplicating things that I don't need right now?

I handed the Giant Boulder to my bro who was previously riding my Pop's Trek comfort bike lol...he is way more pumped to ride now, the bike is a huge step up (and in the right direction) for what we want to do.

I'm already looking to upgrade (drooling over, rather) to a full suspension bike...but that'll be when I actually need it. For now I'm working my way up to kicking butt on the local trails.

I love biking because it's giving me the exercise I know I need, but I don't have to force myself to workout or go jogging.

Do y'all need pictures? I mean these are just basic bikes, nothing compared to what I've seen being ridden on here.

From a few years back, a modified Kona Stinky. This was an 8" travel version. I love snow riding.

At last count there were 20+ bikes in the house. Mountain biking is my lively hood and my wife used to DH race, so we have a few around.

My name's Cayce. Kinda new to mtb'ing, since my childhood anyway. I'm riding a GT Karakorum 3.0 on the local trails here in Tucson, and to the grocery store, work, etc. I don't have the money for multiple rides, or extravagant mods, but I'm looking to make a couple upgrades once I can find someone to give me some sound advice.

Just got back from my first overnight trip :-)
Salt Spring Island on the West Coast of British Columbia

My ride was my trusty Campus Hybrid touring bike. Nothing too special, just lots of mid range components that are easy to fix and easy to find while traveling. Of course there is a full set of Ortlieb panniers, Schwalbe Marathon tires to go with it.

Cheers,
Andreas

Hey Cody,

Ruckle... I have toured all over North America, Europe, Africa and Ruckle park is clearly within the top 3 campgrounds I ever stayed, ever! Walk/cycle in only.

Cody, where are you located?

hello. I am riding a trek 4500. I love the hydraulic breaks. my old trek 800 was stolen last fall. I hope whomever stole it is having fun, because i Love my new one!

i have a cateye strada wireless computer, a blackburn mars 3.0 rear light, and a princeton tec eos headlight. I end up riding in the dark, on my way home quite often.

I am looking for a different saddle though, the stock one is not to my liking. I am sure i will visit this part of the forum more, as i ride more this summer.

I'm currently riding a 2009 Rocky Mountain Altitude 30 that's basically stock with the exception of ugraded Ardent tires front and rear. My plans are to add a hydraulic seat post this spring along with some bigger brakes.

My Cannondale Caffeine with some fox shocks thrown on instead of the poorly designed mono shock. What I love most about this bike is the fact I can bolt on a rack on the rear. I still need to get that done. I love my machine.

Howdy,

Well I've been scouring craigslist for some time, for that perfect deal. It landed in my lap a few weeks ago, a funny story no less. I find an ad "Bike for beer"... ok, I'll bite, and click on it.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/p480x480/559351_750245690081_62002887_33899440_89791353_n.j pg

I cracked up laughing and emailed the guy, he was only a few blocks away. I had an 8 pack of Shiner left over from a party that weekend and offered that up. He haggled in two 24ozers from the corner store... Deal! He wanted the cheap stuff, I even splurged and got him a 24oz Corona and a 24oz Dos Equis. So, I've got a new to me bike for the price of 10 beers.

Cleaned the bird poop off of the bike, lubed it all up, tuned in the drivetrain, and added some parts.

I rode it to work for the first time today, after waiting to get some new parts. I've got a used (given to me) Manitou fork and new headset, seat and seat post, Crank Bros Candy pedals, two rear LED commuter lights, a NightRider Ultra Fazer 3.0 headlight, and some sette grips. Bike is to serve a dual role as a commuter and trail bike.

I'm in it for less than $150 and all of the stuff is bolt on... so I'm happy.

The bike as it sits in my shop at work.
